moreANN ARBOR, Mich. ? The defense that veteran coordinator Greg Mattison inherited when he arrived at Michigan two seasons ago was so bad, it was borderline laughable.
By the end of the Rich Rodriguez era, even the likes of Indiana and Massachusetts were plowing through the open barn door that was an unorthodox and disorganized defense unbecoming of the nation?s winningest program.
Mattison, coming off stops with Urban Meyer and Florida (2005-07) and John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens (2008-10), could have introduced himself to his new players, cued up a DVD player, pointed at the screen and told his new charges to mimic the movements of his previous two teams.
But Mattison, 62, had earned his stripes as a Michigan man in the 1990s, when he served five seasons as a defensive-line coach and defensive coordinator for the Wolverines.
His players could take cues from Ed Reed or Ray Lewis, sure, but he didn?t want his players to mirror the Gators or Ravens.
He wanted the Wolverines to play the Michigan way, the way its defenders had for decades.
More important than system, scheme or personnel was tradition.
?We try to get our players to play Michigan football, and you all know what that is,? Mattison said. ?The philosophy is the Michigan philosophy: play hard, run to the football, play with great technique and be a team player.?
And so they did.
In 2010, the Wolverines allowed an average of 35.2 points a game and ranked 108th or worse in scoring defense, pass defense and total defense.
Last season, Michigan switched to a base 4-3 alignment, gave up 17.4 points a game and ranked sixth, 16th and 17th in the same categories ? and the Wolverines might be even better this season.
Michigan has the No. 1 pass defense in the nation (152.1 yards a game) and ranks 12th in total defense (303.5).
The continued improvement, safety Jordan Kovacs said, is in part because of some stout play by a defensive line that had to replace three starters and the simple demands Mattison continues to make.
?It?s the things Coach Mattison preaches,? Kovacs said. ?It?s about tackling and not giving up big plays and stopping the run.?
The Gators of Meyer and Mattison stomped Ohio State in the 2006 Bowl Championship Series title game. They held the Buckeyes to 82 yards.
Mattison said he remains friends with Meyer but said football coaches have such short memories that neither coach will be able to glean an advantage from their time together.
?Every place you?re at, you put everything into that, and it?s almost like you don?t remember what happened before and you don?t focus on that,? Mattison said.

Let?s make history! Buckeye fans, if you are receiving this email it means that you have been selected to take part in the first-ever streamer drop from your seat location in C deck. In all, there will be 4000 streamers distributed around the first four rows of C deck at Ohio Stadium. As you arrive at your section, the usher will give you a streamer and show you a print out of what the stadium will look like once the streamer drop has happened.
The plan is simple, and this is where you come in: At kickoff on Saturday, take your streamer and throw it over your seat location towards the field. The end result will be a cascade of Scarlet and Gray falling from C deck as a symbol of support for your 11-0 Buckeye football team!
We appreciate your support and help in making this event a success!
Thanks and Go Bucks!

PDCOLUMBUS, Ohio -- Always the last game of the regular season, for the first time since 1999, Ohio State's game against Michigan will also serve as the Buckeyes' last game of the season overall. That year, a 6-6 record kept Ohio State from a bowl. This year it's a postseason ban.
"This is 'The Game.' I don't know if you need any more emphasis on it," senior linebacker Etienne Sabino said. "But, yeah, this is the Super Bowl. This is the bowl game. This is the national championship. This is everything for us. This is The Game."
There have been seasons when the Buckeyes had roses in their mouths on the field after beating Michigan, and bowl hopes are always a new topic after The Game is done. This year, the postgame won't be just about the most important game of the season being over, but this team's time together being done.
"Yeah, it definitely adds to it, I'm not going to beat around the bush and say it doesn't," senior right tackle Reid Fragel said. "I think that being the last game, everybody knows it's the last time we're all together. I know Jack Mewhort and I were talking the other day, that last snap out there, it's going to be it. It's going to be sad in a sense, but hopefully we can go out with a win and have a good memory."
While the bowl ban has been a topic all season, it has been able to serve as some reverse form of motivation, the Buckeyes wanting to show the rest of the college football world what it's missing out on. Next weekend, the Buckeyes will be watching in the Big Ten title game at least one team (Wisconsin) and probably another team (Nebraska) that they beat. The Badgers are in, while the only way the Cornhuskers won't go is if they lose to Iowa today and Michigan beats the Buckeyes.
Around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, that reality will hit home.
"It is kind of hard to think about, but then again, I don't think it will really hit me or hit the seniors until after the Michigan game when we're like, 'Man, we really just played for the last time in the scarlet and gray,' " senior linebacker Zach Boren said. "I think it is kind of unique that my last college game is against the team up north. It should be fun."
