Game Thread THE GAME: #1 Ohio State 42, #2 Michigan 39 (11/18/06)

We don't care what anyone does, just what the Buckeyes do.

If Michigan slips or doesn't, I don't care. It will still be great to beat them again, especially the Ohio kids on the scUM roster.

And oh yeah --- I hope Corso puts on the freakin' Wolverine head before the game!!!!

Go Bucks!

The last time the two teams were undefeated going into The Game was 1973. Oddly enough, both teams remained undefeated after The Game.

In 1975, tOSU had a perfect record, and TSUN had no losses and 2 ties, so both teams were 'undefeated'.

This is a recording. :wink2:

I'm sure you're right. I'm just repeating what I heard on Rivals Radio. But I should have researched it before posting it.

Thanks.

I guess that since Archie was playing, Ohio State won in 1975? (I think Ohio State was 3-0-1 against Michigan with Archie Griffin.)

My brother watched the Michigan - PSU game and came up with a startling conclusion. He hates Michigan.

His analogy was great. To him, Michigan beating up on PSU was like the Cobra Kai dojo in Karate Kid beating up an old man (Paterno/PSU). Cobra Kai sensei John Kreese (Lloyd Carr) beat up a team (albeit barely) with his protege Johnny Lawrence (Chad Henne) that couldn't fight its way out of a wet paper bag, nonetheless hang with the Cobra's (Michigan). So, in that sense, it's up to Mr. Miyagi (Tressel) and his student Daniel (Smith) to fight them in the ring (the 'Shoe) in a climactic battle pitting good versus evil, and setting right what was once wrong.

Whenever I start to get nervous about this game, I just tell myself that Troy will NOT lose this game his senior year on our turf.

OK, I'll feel much better for a minute or two until I have to remind myself of this again!

When I think about this game I get nervous. Maybe because it wasn't THAT long ago, (Hey, I just turned 30.... five or six year is really not that long ago...right?!) that this game was the Buckeye's fans worst nightmare.

We had some great...great teams in the 90's but it seemed like that game was always our Achilles heel. No matter how great our team was, Michigan OWNED us. I can remember several Saturdays where I sat in a stupefied silence, with tears(so sue me, I am a girl after all.) running down my face because it seemed like we just pissed away THE GAME. It seemed back in the 90's. No matter how great the team was, they would start to buy into the 'we can't be beat' theory and damn if we didn't get beat by THAT TEAM. I don't want to bad mouth Coach Cooper, but that is what he lacked that Coach Tressel has in spades.

Coach Cooper seemed like he would get compliant by the end of the season. If we won, we won. If we lost, we lost. He let his team forget what historical value these games had.

Coach Tressel seems to be the opposite. He WANTS that win against Michigan. He CRAVES the win against Michigan. His teams seemed to realize that this game, this rivalry will be their biggest game of their lives. It seems that even mediocre player come out, and give 210% during this game, and the star shine brighter than ever before. The Game is back to it's glory days, under JT.

This is what I found from 1990-2000
1990- Michigan 16 Ohio State 13 Columbus
1991- Michigan 31 Ohio State 3 Ann Arbor
1992- Michigan 13 Ohio State 13 Columbus
1993-Michigan 28 Ohio State 0 Ann Arbor
1994-Michigan 6 Ohio State 22 Columbus
1995- Michigan 31 Ohio State 23 Ann Arbor
1996- Michigan 13 Ohio State 9 Columbus
1997- Michigan 20 Ohio State 14 Ann Arbor
1998- Michigan 16 Ohio State 31 Columbus
1999- Michigan 24 Ohio State 17 Ann Arbor
2000- Michigan 38 Ohio State 26 Columbus

8 wins for Michigan, 1 tie, and 2 wins for Ohio State.

From 2001-2005
2001- Michigan 20 Ohio State 26 Ann Arbor
2002- Michigan 9 Ohio State 14 Columbus
2003- Michigan 35 Ohio State 21 Ann Arbor
2004- Michigan 21 Ohio State 37 Columbus
2005- Michigan 21 Ohio State 25 Ann Arbor

4 wins for Ohio State, and 1 for Michigan.

This game looks bigger than ever. If we win out, and Michigan wins out...holy crap.

I watched the Penn State game, and a couple of other games from Michigan. They look tough. Their D is really good. Their O nothing to poo-poo. I swear their D is looking to knock players out of the game.

Overall, I think by the time we take them on, our team will be playing the ballgame of their lives. What I love about watching this years team, they have improved A LOT from the first game, and they continue to do so. They are not the 'perfect' team. They always have places, and stuff to improve on. The mistakes they make during one game, won't be there the next.

They won't let up. The D may bend, but I highly doubt they will break. The O may struggle, but with Troy Smith's leadership, I don't see them falling flat.

I am not going to say outright Ohio State will win. But, they have a damn good chance of a National Championship team. And with Coach Tressel I don't see them buying into the hype. It is damn hard to beat a good team who doesn't TALK much smack, but just goes out, and PROVES that they are the number one team in the nation.

Anyways, that is my two cents, with that and fifty cent's you still can't buy a cup of coffee.

FWIW, Here is a good site with information on past Ohio State Michigan games:

http://library.osu.edu/sites/archives/OSUvsMichigan/osuvsmichigan.htm

P.S. It even has a photo of GREEN Buckeye leaves (under "trivia"):
ARCHIEHELMET.jpg

The design of the Ohio State Buckeye leaf was originally drawn in 1950 by alumnus and comic strip artist Milton Caniff and was intended to represent the buckeye tree as a symbol for strength and sturdiness of all Ohio State students. The first Buckeye leaf decal appeared on the helmets of the 1967 OSU football team and are still given to players today for execution of an exceptional play on the field.

Sorry, but those stickers look goofy.

Yea, things sure change over time. Did you like some of the old program art?

To enthusiastic fans, football program covers are often seen as simply the holder for the precious information inside. However, throughout the years, artists have produced program covers that celebrate the game, the team, the fans, and the university such as this one from November 9, 1901.

Frederick Machetanz (1908-2002) is known for portraying Alaskan life and wildlife through his paintings, lithographs, illustrations, and writings. However, Machetanz began his career as a student at The Ohio State University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1930 and a Masters of Fine Arts degree in 1935. To help finance his education, Machetanz drew football program covers and painted portraits of fraternity brothers and other campus friends. After graduation, Machetanz moved to Alaska, but continued to contribute to OSU football programs until 1939.

James Thurber (1895-1961) is best known as a humor writer and artist. He is also the artist of this football program from 1936. Thurber attended The Ohio State University from 1914 until 1917 when he withdrew. While on campus, Thurber was the news editor of the Lantern, the student newspaper, as well as the editor-in-chief of the Sundial, the student humor magazine. He was also involved in various student organizations such as Sphinx, the sophomore honorary society, and Strollers, a dramatic society. At the time he drew the art for this November 21, 1936 cover, Thurber was the associate editor of The New Yorker. This is the only program that he drew.
