The Big Unit to The Big Apple

hamiltuckbuck: "Didn't the Yankees engineer "The choke"? 180 million just don't buy what it used to, I guess."

How come when the Yankees win, all I hear is: its all about the money?? HOWEVER, when they lose, all I hear is that money doesn't matter??

Will you people make up your mind for once??

And to answer your question, yes. The Yankees engineered the choke job by making awful decision after awful decision since the '01-'02 Offseason. Lets say that they put themdelves in the coffin, but Arizona nailed it shut by handing Schilling to Boston in exchange for magic beans.

Sloop,
Billy Beane is dangling Huddy for the best he can get. It appears the Red Sox are now interested after losing Pedro and Lowe. Now Red Sox fans can say that they'll get Clement and Wells to replace Pedro and Lowe, but I'm not buying it. Wells can still pitch, but that pig could break down at any time. Lowe was the Red Sox best starter in the postseason last year. 3 wins and a 1.87 era. I talked to him at the OSU-scUM game and he said he's going to Detroit. If the Yanks get Unit, there's talk that the Sox would go after Burnett or Hudson. I'm not sure they have anything to give Beane for Hudson. Burnett , on the other hand, spends more time on the dl than he spends on the active roster. I think , at this point, their starters are a big question mark.

I don't see how the Yankees can afford Unit and Beltran,, but, all indications are thats wht they plan to do. The Cubs are going to unload Sosa in the next 10 days and probably offer Beltran an outrageous offer, maybe 7 years around $100 Mil, we'll see.

Hudson To The Braves

Brutus: "It appears the Red Sox are now interested after losing Pedro and Lowe."

This just in. Hudson got traded to the Atlanta Braves. So scratch him out of the Red Sox' plans.

"Wells can still pitch, but that pig could break down at any time."

Here's the thing: the Red Sox signed Wells to an incentive-laden contract based upon the amount of starts he makes. This was a bad move. Give Boomer the guarantee, because (as his last year with the Yanks showed), he'll keep dragging himself to the mound to make more money each time, but might break down in the postseason. If they can give Boomer the rest and keep him healthy, he's a great pick-up. He's as good a big game pitcher as there ever was. Bank on it. I'm gonna sweat come playoff time when the Yanks have to face the Boom-Boom.

"Lowe was the Red Sox best starter in the postseason last year. 3 wins and a 1.87 era."

If I was the Red Sox, I'd let Lowe walk. I wouldn't even make him an offer, regardless of how he pitched in the postseason. He's erratic (always has been), and Boras is going to ask for a small fortune to sign him. I wouldn't sweat this if I was Boston.

"I think , at this point, their starters are a big question mark."

They may be, but who cares? Boston is playing with house money at this point. Why make a bad deal for a pitcher (like giving Pedro 4 years) when there's no pressure to win AT ALL in '05? I think the Sox are doing the right thing. They have one of the top revenue clubs in baseball, and will be in on guys like Johan Santana and Ben Sheets in the coming years. Wait, be patient, and if you have to, sacrifice '05 (not like any Boston fan cares at this point), and build a better team down the road.

If the Red Sox fall into the same trap that the Yankees did in '02, they're going to be worse off for it. The Yankees had a veteran core at the end of the road (much like the Red Sox do now), BUT instead of allowing themselves a transition year, they pushed to win at all costs in '02, and hurt themselves down the road (see: this year and last). That year saddled them with the Giambi contract, and made the Jeff Weaver deal which (in essence) crippled the franchise.

If I'm the Red Sox, I know I'm going to the Playoffs again, and there's no pressure for me to win it this time. I'd be patient, wait out the plum stud pitcher out there, and jump on him when he becomes available to me. In the meantime, stay competitive, and make the right smaller moves (like the Renteria signing).

I give major kudos to the Red Sox for letting Martinez walk. I think they made the right move. And in fact, this'll hurt the Yankees in the long term because the Red Sox will be breathing down their necks when the aforementioned Sheets and Santana are on the free agent market. If they inked Pedro to four years, this wouldn't be the case.

"I don't see how the Yankees can afford Unit and Beltran,, but, all indications are thats wht they plan to do."

Believe me: the Yankees PRINT money. They have their own network, draw four million fans, and are building a NEW Yankee Stadium that will be an absolute cash cow (and will also stop them from paying the luxury tax to the small market teams under the current CBA). Don't cry poor for George.

"The Cubs are going to unload Sosa in the next 10 days and probably offer Beltran an outrageous offer, maybe 7 years around $100 Mil, we'll see."

I can't see it happening because I can't see the Cubs unloading Sosa. Who is stupid enough to take him? Even Omar Minaya wasn't dumb enough to pull the trigger on that deal, and to me, the Mets would be the only team where a Sosa deal would make even remote sense.

Who care's ? Ask any Sox fan if they care . If they don't win it all next year, the'll be pissed. You can't win once (even if 80 years) and be satisfied.

They'll miss Pedro and Lowe. No way Wells gets over 30 starts next year. Schilling's already going to miss a couple of starts at the beginning. If they sign Clement (likely), he'll get lit up like a christmas tree in the AL. Can you say 5.00 era ? Same goes with Burnett if they get him. He's only had more than 20 starts twice in his career, and never 30 or more.

They will most certainly miss Pedro and to a degree Lowe. Pedro still performed great for them and being back in the NL, in Shea, he'll have a great 2005. Lowe will also benefit by pitching in the cavern known as Comerica.

They still have yet to sign Varitek. He'll cost them plenty.

You cant assume they'll ever get Sheets, Santana or the best pitching Fa's because the Yankees will always be there to outbid them on the best of the bunch.

Their minor leaque system is below average at best.

It is rather amusing watching both teams trying to top the other for free agents.

Sosa has to go and the Cubs know it. They'll most certainly pay the majority of his contract just to move him. That's going to open it up to other teams. He played his last game as a cub.

Since when does baseball make any sense.

What is everyone so worried about. It does not matter who the Yankees obtain. It is still a game, nine (or more if need be) innings long where anyone can win.

Just look at the series a few years back. The Yankee machine gets derailed by who?

A bunch of guys, who love to play baseball, and just happened to be from the land of oranges and old people.

Yes the Florida Marlins.

Those guys on paper had a less than zero chance to beat the Bronx Bombers and wow they did.

I am a Yankees fan tried and true and I think RJ coming to the Bronx would be great, but I would trade him in for David Wells any day of the week. Nothing against Randy but Wells gets Yankee tradition and was Mr. Clutch for them when they needed him.

Looks like it is happening....

http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/8006449

The endgame of Randy Johnson's maneuvering to be traded to the New York Yankees, an issue in Arizona since June, is close to being written in blockbuster-trade fashion.

In a mega-deal involving three clubs, parameters of a deal are in place in which Johnson will be dealt to the Yankees, pitcher Javier Vazquez and two minor-leaguers (catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan) will move from the Yankees to the Los Angeles Dodgers and outfielder Shawn Green and pitchers Brad Penny and Yhency Brazoban will be traded from Los Angeles to Arizona.

Let me repost this....

I hate to tell you but the run support for Pedro will be just as good as all the other guys the Mets had. I think the Mets starting rotation 1-4 had ERA's all in the mid 3's or low 4's. All those guys had .500 or so years.

My prediction is that Pedro doesn't get back those 5mph or so that he seems to have lost and now that he has to hit again he becomes a little more shy on the inside half than normal. Yeah there is no DH but the NL is a different league. He goes 14-8 or 13-9 and doesn't return to the Pedro of old. He should have stayed in Beantown and rode out his time left listening to "who's your daddy" several times a year and getting the chance to shut up a stadium FULL of Yankee fans, instead he chooses the almighty dollar and page 2 obscurity in Shea.

This makes a lot of sense to me. I think all three teams get what they want.

Sloopy.....I dont know man, although how dominant RJ is, how many years he can go and the fact the Yanks are getting older comes into question, I just dont know what to think about this deal. We have officially scraped every last prospect the Yanks have, if this deal goes down. Although they are in a "win now" mentality, I see some upside and maybe even more downside with this trade. Thoughts?

When are the Yankees going to sign Beltran ?
I don't think they will.

THe Astros seem to be willing to jump in the mix and spend. With the recent Johnson trade and Green leaving, it looks like the Depodestas endgame is signing Beltran.

I say Astros or Dodgers. I could be wrong.

It will come down between the Yanks and the Astros. If the Cubs can unload Sosa, then they will be in the mix as well. I still believe regardless of what happens with RJ, they are the front runners for Beltran.

Where does he fit in?

You already have Sheffield, Matsui, Bernie.

Do you make Bernie the full time DH or put Beltran in to CF and rotate Bernie and Shef in Left?

Seems like an awful lot of dinero being spent on the outfield. Of course what am I saying, the left side of the infield probably has all 4 of them beat

I guess though since George prints his own money "YES" he can spend whatever he wants
