The Big Unit to The Big Apple

'Tastic: "Johnson's stance benefits the Yankees even if the sides can't bridge the difficult gap in trade negotiations because it seems certain he would reject a deal to any other team, including the Red Sox"

The Yankees stated today that they will NOT send any cash back to the D-Backs in a potential Randy Johnson deal. Last night, a source very VERY close to George (basically, if it comes from this source, you can take it to the bank) said that the RJ deal is (quote, unquote) "Dead."

Also, the early rumors from the Winter Meetings are that the Mets are looking to pull off a Jose Reyes for Tim Hudson deal, and the Yanks are close to finalizing a deal with Eric Milton.

It's more likely that Hudson will go to the Braves. The Braves are offering pitching prospect D Meyer, in addition to M. Giles. The A's want a good pitching prospect in return. I'm not sure the Mets are willing to do that, especially since Meyer is a lefty.

I'm wondering if the Yankees passing on Unit means they're saving their cash to sign Beltran.

Brutus: "It's more likely that Hudson will go to the Braves."

Can the Braves afford Hudson? Keep in mind that they have to give Huddy an extension when the deal goes down.

"I'm wondering if the Yankees passing on Unit means they're saving their cash to sign Beltran."

First off, the words "budget" and the New York Yankees don't belong in the same sentence. The Yanks have had the highest payroll in baseball since 1999, and haven't looked back. They print money. They would acquire Johnson (give him an extension too) AND Beltran without blinking.

Secondly, I don't really know if the talks are truly "dead-dead." The Yanks have backed off to make Arizona's demands come down.

Thirdly, I don't know what to make of the D-Backs' recent signings (Ortiz and Glaus). Are they a team looking to add and compete with RJ, or are they signing guys now with the financial flexibility they'll gain with the eventual trade of the Unit?

I don't know. I do like the moves the Yankees have made, and I'd like to see them sign Pavano.

Tibbs: "And I thought the D-backs were trying to stick it to the Yankees. Curious... "

Tibbs, WAKE UP! The D-Backs already stuck it to us!! The D-Backs GAVE Curt Schilling away to our biggest rival!! FOR CASEY FOSSUM! REPEAT: FOR CASEY FOSSUM!! Casey "4 and 15 with a 6.65 ERA" Fossum!!!

I don't know how much more shit the effing D-Backs can throw in the Yankees face considering they pole ****ed us in the rear end by engineering the biggest choke job in the history of sports, and make us sit through an offseason of every Star Trek Convention, Red Sox loving geek chirping our ears off!! The damage has been done!

This D-Back front office is brand new, and I'm sure they'd rather eat shit than send RJ to the Bronx, but they have no choice: they have an $18 million player with trade value who's leaving at the end of the year for nothing, has threatened to make their lives miserable, and has said that he'll only go to one team.

If the D-Backs could trade him to Boston, they'd take another Casey Fossum for Johnson in a heartbeat! But they can't!!

Whatever. I'm not getting sucked into a typical Tibor agitation job. The fact is, no matter what you say, you know I don't cry, and you know that I'm right.

I could care less if the Red Sox got Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, or Cy Young himself, as long as its on the up-and-up. I can't sit back and whistle dixie when Arizona demands an enormous package from the Yankees for Schilling, won't let us talk to him, sells Schilling on the Red Sox (Boston wasn't one of the two teams he originally said he would accept a trade to), turns around and trades him to Boston for a marginal pitching prospect (at best), and then tries to do the same exact thing the very next year.

hamiltuckbuck: "Sloopy, is BJ Ryan the pitcher Cincy sent to Baltimore in the Jaun Guzman trade?"

July 31, 1999: The Cincinnati Reds trade B. J. Ryan with Jacobo Sequea (minors) to the Baltimore Orioles for Juan Guzman and cash.

Yup. Horrible deal by the Redlegs ..

Didn't the Yankees engineer "The choke"? 180 million just don't buy what it used to, I guess.
