Scheduling and Hiring seem to be the biggest issues to me.
Followed by a very bad media partner that actively works against the conference.
The conference-wide challenge seems like an elegant solution to us b/c Ohio State is one of the few schools in B10 that makes an effort to schedule decent opponents. This would solve the problem for the schools that make no effort... but I don't think it will work anytime soon in CFB.
It'll keep being scuttled by teams with pre-existing OOC rivalries, such as Stanford-ND / USC-ND, who don't want to add more "quality" opponents (especially away games) on top of that.
It has to be an individual effort in both scheduling and hiring, and I just can't see it happening.
Other than that, I think B10 needs to jump ship to a different network that will at least show some objectivity.

I think most people have already made the key points.
1)- It's coaching. The talent gap between coaches in the Big Ten and SEC isn't even debatable. We see what happens when an elite/good coach he takes over a program. Alabama sucked for a good stretch before they got their man. Florida is sucking currently but they will be back when they hire a good guy. They have the resources.
2)- Recruiting is another factor (Don't get me started on over signing). Year after year the SEC dominates the recruiting sites in the rankings. They get the best coaches and players. It's not hard to figure out. I know Michigan st. and Oregon usually don't have top glasses but they are the exceptions as well as a few other teams. The Big Ten teams also have to make sure to keep the in state recruits and not letting them go to the SEC. The past few years the SEC has raided the north for a few elite players.
3)- The scheduling is getting better for the Big Ten. Wisconsin played LSU, Mich St. is going to play Oregon, Michigan played Alabama a few years ago and has Florida coming up in a few years, Ohio State has played a few big OOC games in the past and has VA Tech coming up. Big Ten just has to win some games.
SEC is just one love fest. Trust me I live in the south, so I have to put up with this bullshit. Last year Alabama fans cheering for Auburn in the national championship game. Greatest rivalry in sports my ass.

Well, to be fair...other than you guys, who else has a campus draw? I mean, there's what, 7-8 million people in the Columbus area alone, right?
Ever been to Lincoln? Only thing good in Lincoln on a non gameday is the way out of Lincoln.
There's nothing to do in Nebraska, period. I live in a state where everything is closed by 9 or 10, and nothing stays open 24 hours, other than Burger King, Walmart, McDonalds and Walgreens.
How do you sell a recruit on coming to a place like that?

That's a good point. Tradition and history is one thing Nebraska has to sell. Are you sold on your coach? Winning can cure a lot of things and most programs that win on the national stage will bring in some top notch recruits. Of course top notch strippers and slush funds could help as well.

That's one of the other reasons why the teams in the B1G have had issues. Nobody wants to buck tradition, and go for gusto.

Easier said than done, but you sell the parents: there's no way for him to get in trouble. The straight and narrow.
But yea, Nebraska has it tough with recruiting. Not a lot of talent in-state. Not even a lot of talent in neighboring states. And not a "sexy" location for people to come from out of state.
Where'd everyone come from in the 90s? Texas?

Personally I think the location stuff is a total cop out.
Tallahassee, Gainseville, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Arkansas.....these are god forsaken shit holes 3rd world refugees would turn down asylum in. I'm surprised we haven't had a fucking Ebola outbreak in any of them yet.
It comes down to hiring the right guy and you are only going to get the right guy if the school (and lets be honest, its boosters) are going to provide the resources necessary to win.
Will to put an emphasis on football begets resources, Resource commitment begets coaching talent, coaching talent begets playing talent, playing talent begets winning. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Point taken, but I would point out that most of their recruits come from that 3rd world ebola-infested region.
I mean going from Georgia to 'Bama or such isn't a stretch.
And I will say that for a young male's mind... there's a lot more eye candy down there than you'll find in the Midwest, if that piques their interest.
