B1G coaches inspired by Buckeyes' title

When Minnesota's Jerry Kill, Maryland's Randy Edsall, Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald and Purdue's Darrell Hazell exited the head coaches' convention meeting Tuesday morning, they didn't spell out O-H-I-O.

But all four Big Ten coaches were pleased that Ohio State won the national championship on Monday night, ending the league's 12-year drought since last reaching college football's pinnacle. Unlike many fans, the coaches don't get wrapped up in the endless debate about conference strength, but they don't tune it out, either. They can't.

"It's great for the Big Ten," Kill told ESPN.com. "There's no question about that."

Added Edsall: "It probably eliminates that negative talk about the Big Ten and all those things. It's nice to have one of your conference members win the national championship."

The Big Ten's hubris will never match that of the SEC, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. As one Big Ten assistant joked Monday afternoon about the title game, "You hold your nose and root for Ohio State."

But conference pride exists, and to have the nation's best team shines a positive light on the Big Ten, which has been bashed for the better part of the past decade.

"To play 15 games and to be an on-the-field champion, just ecstatic for those guys, first and foremost," Fitzgerald said of Ohio State. "It also shows that anybody can win, to go play it on the field. You have to go play a competitive schedule but most importantly, you have to win. Everybody's in control of that."

You don't get it. They lost to Virginia Tech. The season is over. There is no way that they get through the Spartans. There is no reason for hope. All are doomed.

Exactly, osu won a title last night not the b1g. If the rest of those midget donkey fuckers want a title to brag about they can go earn one themselves. And if somehow one of them find themselves playing for a title, i'll only root for them if they're playing some team that's more hatable like auburn or uga or nd.

Let's be a little bit fair here.

The conference was 6-5 in bowl/playoff games, when most experts/oddsmakers predicted an 0-10 showing.

Wisconsin won a major bowl game and finished #13 in the final AP poll.

Michigan State won a major bowl game and finished #5 in the final AP poll.

And of course Ohio State beat the #1 and #2 teams in the country to win the national championship.

Yes, Ohio State won the title, not the B1G. But the rest of the conference proved to be better than expected.

It is interesting that of the four mentioned, none of them won a bowl - or even went bowling - though

The Big Ten was very relevant. Bucky and Sparty losing to us as badly as they did put us in the playoffs.

Thanks, fellas. Nice bowl wins.

But they damned well better not talk about the "Big Ten" winning a national championship when the only team in the conference ever to make a national title game is wearing scarlet and gray.

The SEC has a higher win percentage against OOC top 10 teams (8.3%) than the Sun Belt (0%), MAC (0%), Independents (0%), MWC (0%), and C-USA (0%) in the past 2 seasons.

The SEC has a lower win percentage against OOC top 10 teams (8.3%) than the B1G (60%), PAC 12 (57.1%), ACC (52.9%), Big 12 (25%) and AAC (16.7%) in the past 2 seasons.
