The BCS isn't the problem, it's Pre Season Polls

Does it bother you tOSU didn't get a chance in 98 b/c of MSU, but Tennessee got to have a chance with 1 loss?

Does it bother you USC, having one of the historic defenses of all time, will not get a shot?

Does it bother you Oklahoma may get a title birth over 1 loss Texas, after losing to Texas?

Does it bother you undefeated Auburn got left out of a title game?
Sure, though not as much as possibly seeing a squad that finished 3rd or 4th in the Big 12 South get a crystal football in January. I'm weird like that.

You have to have a confrence champion in your playoff. No confrence would ever agree to a playoff without a guarantee one of its schools would be in it. Plus I will give Utah an auto bid because Cincy and VT are so low.

so... assuming UF/OU/VT/USC wins

1. OU (Big 12) v. 8. VT (ACC)
2. UF (SEC) v. 7. Cincy (Big East)
3. USC (Pac 10) v. 6. PSU (Big Ten)
4. Utah (auto birth) V. 5. ???????

you choose between Alabama (12-1)/Texas (11-1)/Texas Tech(11-1) and they all deserve a spot in that playoff. Add a Mizzou win and this is all one big cluster[censored].

does a 8 team playoff guarantee you the true champion you all desire

cool. That playoff looks great as well. Better than OU getting a title shot over a 1 loss team that beat them assuming #5 is Texas.

12 pack of beer, a TV, and I can't wait. Sign me up.

but then how could you put texas above texas tech in that case... With Oklahoma already getting the auto bid, couldn't Tech say, "hey wait, we beat Texas, we desrve the #5 spot"?

plus dont forget alabama would only have 1 loss

I'm really not very concernd about it. All of the teams that have actual beefs, now have a chance to go out and play for it. Right now, USC, Texas, and even Penn State are getting a sandpaper handjob. You try and look at schedules and trends, but in the end, it should be settled on the field. Right now it isn't.

TG, draw up the playoff schedule, I'll get a twelve pack, and I'll enjoy. Thanks.

I think the only way this will truly ever been resolved is a 16 team playoff with the higher seed hosting the first 2 games/rounds.

This year that would be

Florida
Alabama
Penn State
Ohio State
ACC Champ
Oklahoma
Mizzou
Texas
Texas Tech
Cincinnati
Troy
Ball State (or Buffalo)
Utah
Boise State
USC
Tulsa/East Carolina winner

That is all 11 D-1A conference winners and 5 wild cards (Ohio State/Big XII title game loser, SEC Title game loser, Texas and Texas Tech). That would be a killer lineup and it would definitely get butts in the seats. The semi-finals and finals could be played on a rotational basis between the current BCS bowl sites.

The players mostly won't be in any classes after this week anyway. Start it this weekend and play it through the holidays so the stupid sniffles about "missing class time" are abbreviated. As if these kids would miss a ton of class time for a playoff system - hell it MIGHT keep some of them motivated to do well in the classroom to keep eligible.

As an FYI, missing class time isn't an issue. It has already been proven to be a non-factor.

Great playoff scenario...I'm ready.

That's absolutely not what the Presidents and BCS honks continue to bring up even today.....

It absolutely isn't an issue, except to those that don't want a playoff.

of course if there were to be a playoff, I'm guessing the NCAA would want a piece of the pot so again it comes down to the almighty dollar.

Ohhh.....they can bring it up as an issue. But it has been proven as a non-issue. If other divisions can pull it off flawlessly, it isn't an issue. End of case.

As stated previously, the BCS is held up by BCS job holders. Of course they want the BCS to remain intact. If I'm a BCS chairman I'm not supporting another system that may cost me an easy-ass job.

If Im any of the major bowls, I'm also not supporting a playoff. Who gets left out, how does a playoff benefit my city, my bowl game?

The potential is there to make massive amounts of money, more money than currently being made (by a longshot), but why are you going to change a system that directly benefits you (question to those currently making money on system).

It will take outside forces to cause a change. That or powerful college coaches coming together and forcing a new system. How about Texas, USC, and Penn State decline bowl bids. It'll never happen, but something like that could put a major dent in the current system.

Which Tennessee loss was that? At Syracuse in the opener when an iffy penalty kept alive their late game-winning drive, or when an untouched Clint Stoerner dropped the ball with less than 2 minutes left? :wink2:

I commented earlier to JXC a reason why a playoff solves nothing:

I will concede a playoff is a tidy way of recognizing a champion... So is the BCS... even if widely hated. But, more to the point.... I don't want to see Villanova 1985 win the college football championship. Each year, there are about 4 teams max, and usually less, who can stake an honest claim to the title. What does placing .... I don't know... Utah, Penn State and Virginia Tech in the mix do for us? Suppose Virginia Tech were to win your playoff.... Champion? Sure. Best? Not. even. close.

The above stated is what everyone better be prepared for if a playoff system is ever implemented. It's gonna be "January Madness" and "Cinderella" will show up at this event.

I don't know, but a big part of me still wishes it was back years ago when I was a kid, and waking up on New years day with 13 hours of football to watch. THAT was probably the worst way ever to determine a "true" champion, but DAMN what a Great Day January 1st was back then.

Peace.

FSU loss? Maybe? Maybe FSU went 7-1 in the ACC and lost the title game.

Sorry.

I should have known. But tOSU still should have been there over FSU. F'n Seminoles.

It is the same possibility in the basketball tourney but we accept the winner of the NCAA Tournament as national champs whatever place they are in their conference. Was Villanova the best basketball team in 1985?

Don't worry about where the champs finish in their conference. How often has the 4th place team in a conference won the NCAA basketball tourney?
