Game Thread That Team Up North @ Ohio State - 11/24/18, The '62' Game, Revenge Revoked

The non call for targeting on the Haskins slide was the one someone should be fined/lose a job over.

All the talk of player safety and all the calls you see every Saturday across CFB where the receiver becomes "defenseless" a milisecond before the defender hits him.....and then they sit there and watch a QB slide and take a helmet to helmet shot.

Maddening.
And the replay booth could have stepped in.

Yep.

7 blind/incompetent fucks on the field AND however many in the replay booth.........crickets.

BUT they damn sure called down to review White's hit on the TE.

motherfuckers
The ref whose hat cam it was they had video of and the Replay refs should be let go imediately after the game. You don't fuck around with player safety like that. Make all the questionable holding etc calls you want if you want to flip the balance but player safety calls need to be made no matter what.

Exactly.

I think the application of the targeting rule has been poor and I think they need to look into the yellow card/red card concept to make it a better rule BUT when you go back and watch games from 10-15 years ago the number of shots to the head have dramatically decreased. Players have absolutely gotten the message and have been coached to avoid it so all in all, I like the rule.

That garbage Saturday takes all that and throws it out the window. They acted like they couldn't be bothered to call a blatant late hit to the head when the defender doubled down and used his helmet as a weapon.

The volume of PI calls was bad, most of them were ticky tack but you can always argue that nonsense.

The targeting miss is the one I want to see the B1G offices formally recognize the error and punish the officials for being that inept.

That was one of the worst officiated games I have ever seen by the way. It gets overlooked since we still murdered them, but my god was that terrible. One of the worst I have ever seen. You could tell refs were trying to not let it get too out of hand. We get an unsportsmanlike on a long run bc a guy shoves a guy late when clearly still trying to block, there was nothing malicious there, Two seconds later KJ Hill gets hit wayyy late out of bounds no call. Then a possession or so later a guy goes at the head of our QB giving himself up, not even so much as a fuggin review, and then we get the unsportsmanlike. Not to mention the shit ton of holds scUM kept getting away with, and about 5 bullshit PI calls.

Honestly, scUM is lucky it was more like 75-20

Don't forget the goal line stand where TTUN had 13 players on defense to run Weber OOB at the 1 and OSU wound up kicking a FG.

The Grumpy Old Buckeye: Ohio State vs. TTUN

DSC_8656-Edited.jpg

It’s the regular season finale of the Grumpy Old Buckeye, the column that aims to be the voice of negativity, even when things are going great (and let’s face it, most everything was pretty great yesterday). It’s where I point out the things from each game that make me want to walk out onto my lawn in my bathrobe and yell at people about it. This week we’re talking about THE Game.

True or False?
While much of the offensive line play was the truth against Michigan, there was a false start on the very first OSU drive. It ultimately didn’t cost the Buckeyes, but it wasn’t the only one, and by now I’m sure everyone is as sick of seeing this as I am. It would be interesting to go back and find out the length of Ohio State’s streak is with at least one false start. It’s probably a pretty long streak and if I got paid to do research I’d absolutely look it up.

Actually, the Spots Were Bad
I’m not going to come right out and say there was some conference incentive to call a lenient game for the Wolverines (you all saw the game). What I will say is that on Michigan’s third drive, the visitors were getting some spots that forever remove any Wolverine fan’s right to complain about spots. There were three on the drive that were a full yard beyond what was earned on the field and helped Michigan get into field goal position.

Who’s Fouling Who?
Ohio State’s third drive bogged down and resulted in a punt after a ridiculous personal foul was called on Malcolm Pridgeon. J.K. Dobbins had run for eight yards to set up a third-and-1 but Pridgeon was flagged for a late hit on the play. First of all, if that call was toilet paper, it would be Charmin. Second, Pridgeon was pushed from behind by Chase Winovich on the play before making contact with the other Wolverine.

No Human Knows What Targeting Is
Whether it was ultimately targeting or not, Noah Furbush is not allowed to hit a sliding quarterback. Actually that rule isn’t just for Furbush, it’s for any defensive player. The fact that he hit Dwayne Haskins — who slid and gave himself up — in the helmet could have been called targeting. At the very least it’s a personal foul. Instead of the flag coming out for Furbush’s hit, the flag came out for Urban Meyer running onto the field to yell about Furbush’s hit. Meyer got an unsportsmanlike conduct call and it backed up the Buckeyes into third-and-17. Thankfully, Michigan committed pass interference on the next play.

I like this guy's (i.e. Michael Citro) "grumpy" articles.
