Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

No one in the '11 class made any significant contribution in our FF season ('11-'12). The E8 team was again led by 3 players from the '10 class with Ross making a significant contribution in the tourney run. Last years team is viewed by most as one that under achieved. The only player from the class to have come close to performing in line with their HS ranking is Ross. We got pretty much nothing out of the '12 class (granted it was small, but it looks like we went after the wrong guy) and the '13 class would get an incomplete grade so far. I don't think anyone disputes that the last '11,'12 and '13 classes haven't performed in line with MAttas earlier classes. The '11 class has one more year to make their mark.

The 11-12 class included Q (top scorer on the 2013-14 team), Scott (all-B1G defense) and good contributors in Amir, Thompson and McDonald. There was essentially no 2012-13 class. I read the earlier comment to say that since 2011 our recruits haven't panned out well, rather than recruits in the 2011 and more recent classes haven't panned out.

Recruits we've had since 2011 have yet to display excellence aside from Q, but I think Scott and Thompson have a chance to demonstrate it in 2014-15, and McDonald looks to continue to develop. If you want to say we've had somewhat disappointing recruiting classes in 2011-12, 12-13 and 13-14, I can't argue. But the players we have coming in for 2014-15 are the most promising, perhaps, since Oden-Conley-Cook.

It's pretty simple. They haven't panned out nearly like what they were ranked. If Craft/Sully/DT weren't on the team in 2010, there is no Final Four run. Same with '11 except Q showed up in the tourney. As was shown last year, he was pretty one-dimensional as was Crafty. Scott is super inconsistent as is Thompson. Amir has never shown the fire and Trey is all over the place. At best the 2011 gets a C.

I would hesitate to say "haven't panned out" when you talk about guys like Scott and Thompson. They were rated highly because they could do different things well, bring some special skills other than just scoring. They do provide some unique qualities that you don't see in a lot of college basketball players - both bring an element of quickness that you need to compete at the highest levels of college basketball, that you won't necessarily get otherwise. Scott and Thompson I don't think it would be fair to call them misses or anything like that. Amir, you can say he may have been the wrong guy to get, but at the same time he brings great size and length that you can't get from just anybody. I know '11 was not his greatest class, but keeping in mind it was probably planned on being a supplement to the great 2010 class, and then it looks a lot better.

One thing that people don't talk about enough with Matta is he truly showcases his star players and helps them to play their best. Notable that in 10 years he has not had one player who was undrafted or a second round pick become even a regular role player on an NBA team - how many high profile coaches can say that? In that sense, it's amazing he doesn't get even more high profile talent considering the way he builds around his star players.

Thad is 19 years younger than Mike Krzyzewski. He'd catch Coach K by averaging ~30 wins per season for the next 19 years.

Not out of the realm of possibility. His overall career win % is almost exactly the same as K's (.765 vs. .766).

Given Thad's health issues, he's going to have to hit 600 or 700 before I even entertain the idea.

I think OSU is very lucky to have Thad. That said, before making this post, did you bother to check to see that Thad has only won 30 or more games 3 times in 14 tries going into this season?

~30 wins a year? Are you watching the same team that I am? The only head coach in CBB that gets less out of more is Dave Rice.

Showcasing talent? Evan Turner? Sullinger? Deshaun Thomas? His only recruit that has done anything of note is Conley, and that kid was an afterthought to him showcasing Oden.

Russell is a lottery pick. That has ZERO to do with Matta's coaching ability. What happened to Shannon Scott? Oh yeah, Matta showcasing Russell ruined Scott's season to the detriment of the team, not to mention Amir being Amir. Why? Because Amir isn't being showcased, and therefore he hasn't been coached up one lick in his career.

Showcasing talent is cool. WINNING trumps all that.

Sorry for the rant. I'm annoyed. Getting blown out at home sucks, especially when you have supposedly out recruited the Badgers like 80% of the time. Bo Ryan coaches circles around Matta.

Fuck.
