Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

Lots of talk about him on The Fan today. Wasn't listed as one of the best 15 coaches in college basketball this year and (from the sounds of it) isn't in the running for coach of the year nationally, which is a crock. Bo Ryan's up for both of the aforementioned.

If there's a "most underrated coach" award, I think Matta's got it all wrapped up. Three Big Ten championships in the last five years, a Final Four (and championship game) appearance, five 1st round picks and one #1 overall in the last three years... what else does a coach have to do to get some national recognition?!

Cheat, then bail when the shit's about to hit the fan.

[Clueless voter] Anybody can coach a group of players with big-time talent. Matta's had 6 McDonald's All-Americans in his last 4 recruiting classes, of course they should win big this year. [/Clueless voter]

Ignoring the fact that only one of them is still on the roster (Conley, Cook, Oden, Koufos, Buford, Mullens)

Forbes says Matta's contract is fourth-richest

Coinciding with the one month of the year sports fans really pay attention to college basketball, Forbes.com today published the list of the 10 highest-paid coaches in the sport. Thad Matta checks in at No.4 with a contract averaging $2.5 million per year (before performance incentives).

Forbes also notes that "by any normal business metric, the top-paid college basketball coaches in the NCAA are the most overpaid leaders in the U.S."

The Web site singled out the highest-paid coach, John Calipari, and said that "measured against the revenue Calipari generates, his take-home (pay) looks outsized.

"Calipari . . . pulls down 10 percent or so of the $35 million to $40 million that his program generates for the university. The corporate equivalent for Calipari's pay package would be Microsoft handing Steve Ballmer $6 billion a year. The average NBA coach, who works twice as many games as his college counterpart, makes $4 million a year, about 3.5 percent of an average club's revenue.

"Only in (Calipari's) line of work does a CEO get that kind of deal."

Matta's program reported revenue of $16.1 million for the 2008-09 fiscal year. His guaranteed compensation was $1.925 million, or nearly 12 percent of that. He is guaranteed $2.02 million this year.

The top 10 coaches, and what their contracts average per year:

1. John Calipari, Kentucky ...... $4 million
2. Billy Donovan, Florida........ $3.3 million
3. Bill Self, Kansas ............ $3 million
4. Thad Matta, Ohio State ....... $2.5 million
5. Rick Pitino, Louisville ...... $2.25 million
6. Mike Krzyzewski, Duke ........ $2.2 million
7. Rick Barnes, Texas ........... $2 million
Roy Williams, North Carolina . $2 million
Bob Huggins, West Virginia ... $2 million
Ben Howland, UCLA ............ $2 million

Congrats to Thad on being named Big Ten Coach of the Year by the media. He was previously named in 2006 and 2007.

Matt Painter was named Coach of the Year by the other coaches in the conference.

Good job media but WOW really. Painter by the coaches????? Ohio State did more with less than Purdue, and won the B10 after starting out 1-3. BULL[censored]!!!! Must be sick of O State beating their asses every year.

Also, why wouldn't Crean vote for Matta?

If only I could Photoshop like 11 Warriors (Hoops & Scoops: an OSU basketball blog)

If he didn't vote this way (this year), he's never going to vote that way.

What a joke. Officially have zero respect for him. I just think it's so disrespectful of Turner and the great person and player that he is and shows a lot about Crean's character (lack thereof) in the process. That's honestly sad and incredibly poor of Crean to stoop down like that. He's a grown man so he should act like one and give credit where credit's due. Childish, imo.

Well, Crean's on a one-man mission to revive the IU-OSU rivalry in hoop, even if the Whosyers continue to suck.

Congrats Coach, well deserved honor on leading the Bucks through some tough times. With Turners injury and the brutal schedule to start the B10 season, he did an awesome job winning the regular season title. I also agree that he should have been honored by the coaches as well, everyone picked Purdon't to be a top team and probably win the league. No sour grapes, just go out and kick their [censored]s in the tourney.
