Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

Take a look at the list of coaches by winning percentage in NCAA tournament games (for those with 10 games or more). The top 14 spots include the names Rick Pitino, Roy Williams, Tubby Smith, Gary Williams, Bill Self, and Lute Olson.

Kentucky (indirect move conceded), Kansas, Georgia, OSU, Illinois and Iowa are all arguably 'big time' schools. Further, the move most anticipate to resolve the IU vacancy is Iowa to Indiana. We are getting close to 'all that often'.

Don't misread my posts. I am not in a panic and expect Matta to stay. But there is ample precedence for such a move.

I am greatly reassured by Smith's comment that "We would do everything we could to keep Thad Matta" - a comment that has to make Matta's financial planners feel good as well. (It was also nice to see Smith at the game yesterday - something Geiger almost always did and Smith rarely does - at least in his regular seats.)

Ultimately Matta will stay - should the process ever get that far - because there will be a huge difference to IU between the price of Steve Allford and that of Thad Matta. Because IU already knows this the process will not likely get that far.

Good lord. I didn't realize it happened that much in BBall. Thanks for pointing that out.

I still don't think he leaves unless the NCAA does something crazy.

What's the Delay?

Ok, I can understand some of the potential uncertainty going on right now, but what's the delay in the NCAA's decision-making process??? Do they have anytime-table? Is it OSU's fault in responding to the NCAA, or is this their deliberate speed in arriving at a decision?

The NCAA ruling should be announced within the next two weeks.
will that be in time to ban us from this tourney, should that be the ruling? I'd hate to see that happen, but that may be the lesser of two big evils. Personally I think that we will avoid any ban, but I was just trying to clarify the situation.
Bottom line is, regardless of how good the future looks here at tOSU, if IU is his dream job, we're in trouble....unless Alford takes the job first, which would surprise me.
what talent does IU have? DJ White will likely transfer with others, and the Thad 5 will not be there. Who knows if Ohioans Lauderdale, Koufos and Mullens will bring their "7 foot game" to IU down the road. Why would a hoosier named Alford surprise you, but a non-hoosier like Matta make sense (especially given the greater sacrifice in talent)?

I am only posting this here because we don't have a "s***** and giggles" board, but if you like drama here is the Made for TV Movie scenario:

OSU wins the Big Ten outright. Then, the day before the brackets are announced the NCAA bans OSU for one more year - but gives Gene Smith the option of this year or next.

IIRC scUM got a one year ban for the single largest pay for play violation (dollar wise) in NCAA history. If we get more than 1 year something is very, very wrong.

I am tired of hearing about rumors on Thad. When are we going to step up and reward these coaches? We have some of the best in the country bar none. It becomes very hard to retain excellent coaches. Can we please lock them up long term? They deserve it.

FWIW, the Trib said today that Matta would probably only go from Ohio State if the NCAA votes more sanctions. However, they also made a big deal of pointing out that the recruits didn't have to honor their OSU commitment if there were certain sanctions either. Sounds like we are fine, unless the NCAA decides to lay the hammer down, but if they do, we could really see a bottoming out.

tOSU pays its coaches well and can afford to, the problem is that most contracts have a buy out clause. In this case, Matta's is $500,000.00.

Regardless, UNLESS the NCAA comes down with additional pentalties, Matta is staying at tOSU. Period. End of discussion.
