Texas Tech's situation at place-kicker has evolved from a concern to a source of frustration. Now, it seems as if it has taken an unexpected, crazy twist.

Having already gone through two kickers - who have combined to miss six PATs and half of their field-goal attempts - the sixth-ranked Red Raiders are now seriously considering giving Matt Williams a shot against No. 18 Kansas this weekend.

Williams is a Tarleton State transfer student who won a month of free rent at the Tech/UMass game several weeks ago by kicking a 30-yard field goal. After his successful try, Williams was walking back to his seat when he was flagged down.

"They relayed a message to me saying that Coach [Mike] Leach wanted to talk to me," Williams told RedRaiderSports.com the next day. "He told me to come into his office on Tuesday and talk to him, and then Coach [Clay] McGuire told me to come and speak with him on Monday."

Cont'd ...
It's articles like this that make me grateful we have JT, who is smart enough to have multiple scholarship kickers when 80% of college programs still scour the soccer fields for a walk-on.

Great story I hope the kid does well! While they are at it the might wanna check the arm strength on this kid for the next QB or maybe the baseball team.

I agree wholeheartedly. It has been proven that championship teams usually have a stout defense, solid special-teams, and smart coaching. I don't know much about TT's special-teams, but I do know that TT seems to have a similar season every year...win their first six or seven games in shootouts, and then lose three out of their next six, because of their lack of defense.

By the way, why the hell would you give this kid an opportunity to kick this week, in arguably their biggest game of the season, to date?

Can't get much worse.

Both kickers have poor stats, but it would help if they could get some blocking. Reading one of the Red Raider forums last weekend, the thought was out there that it doesn't make a lick of difference who is kicking with the pathetic execution elsewhere on special teams.

1. When you have to kick as many PATs as a Texas Tech kicker would have to kick, you're bound to miss a few.

2. Seems to run in my mind that Coop once held a tryout. He must have set a B10 record for most kickers who couldn't kick the ball beyond the opponent's 15.

3. No doubt in my mind that one of the major differences between Coop and Tress is the quality of the place kickers.

4. Heard that a kid kicked a 47 yarder last week against Portsmouth only to have it cancelled by a 5 yard penalty, so he kicked it from 52 and still scored.

I'm sure UConn would be interested in this ploy...

At the Rutgers-UConn game I went to .. the UConn kicker missed three field goals... Now it was windy... and he HIT the posts twice... but they removed him from being kicker as of yesterday...
