Texas Longhorns (big hat, no cattle; please don’t Horns Down us)

Yeah folks point to 2003 and 2015 but it’s pretty fucking hard to repeat. Even with same players, you just rarely have same mojo (passion). I’d say that 2903 and 2015 were never likely to happen because of that.
The ones that truly got away, were 1995, 1996, and 1998.....and to a lesser extent maybe 2006 or 2010.
1969, 1970 (although claimed), 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1979.

And since you Xentioned it, I plan on being disappointed with 2903, but I Xay need cryogenics for that.

Didn't mean to post that part about missed titles. Started to but wasn't going to and then it got added in accidentally.. Regardless, I agree with the super hard to repeat to repeat thing for 2003 (I still think they repeat if Mo C doesn't go off the rails) and 2015 and with 1996 and 1998 being horrible blown opportunities. 1995, they were almost certainly giving the natty to Nebraska solo even if OSU had gone undefeated, but I think that if they'd beaten scUM in 1995 the 1996 disaster wouldn't have happened. 2012 (thanks Gene) wasn't the greatest team, but OSU would have probably won the BIG Title game and played and beaten ND, not 'Bama, for the title, so it's a massive blown opportunity, albeit not one blown by the team itself.

Tommy came here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and he's all out of ass.

... and that's why he goes to the strip club so often.

And even with the absurdity, only two nattys (which don't get me wrong is great) but 2003 (Goddammit Mo C)

I'll concede that I'd skipped over USC: They're just on temporary hiatus and will rebound with a vengeance at some point and don't really belong on the list. But ND also played for a natty in 2012. When Xichigan plays for a BIG championship, maybe I'll consider them more relevant in the national conversation than ND.

The West Coast cares a lot less about football these days, and there's a lot of programs for CA kids to choose from.
The pay-for-image deals could be USC' saving grace. That's the only way I see them rebounding.
On the other hand, you think Nike U isn't already arming up? Oregon -- maybe even Maryland -- could come out of this with fully Pro teams.

Two things about 2012. There's no way the ncaa was letting us off without a second year of the bowl ban. It just wasn't going to happen. Secondly, even if we were eligible, I think you greatly underestimate the desire of the media to both get Notre Dame into that championship game and to punish Ohio State for Tressel. Could we have beaten Bama that year? I think so, but we were never, ever going to be given the chance, and it had nothing to do with GS.

Notre Dame and Ohio State were undefeated.
Bama lost to Manziel.
