Terrell Owens (official thread of nonsense)

Owens will have to practice more before playing for Cowboys

STEPHEN HAWKINS

Associated Press

<!-- begin body-content -->OXNARD, Calif. - Terrell Owens is going to have to practice more before he plays for Bill Parcells.
After Parcells said Owens wouldn't play in the Dallas Cowboys' second preseason game, the receiver sat out the team's practice late Saturday afternoon. Quarterback Drew Bledsoe said Owens' hamstring tightened up on him.
Owens had taken part in the morning practice, his fifth straight since missing 14 in a row because of a hamstring problem.
Owens didn't talk to reporters after either practice. He smiled widely without responding to questions as he walked off the field after the afternoon session.
"I knew at the end of the morning practice today that his hamstring was tightening up on him a little bit," Bledsoe said. "So now he's got a few days to rest here so he's ready to go for next week."
Owens spent most of the nearly two-hour afternoon session on a stationary bicycle. He mostly sat, pedaling only occasionally and slowly when he did.
The Cowboys wrap up their California camp with a light walkthrough Sunday, then play the New Orleans Saints on Monday night in Shreveport, La. An off day Tuesday means Owens won't be back on the field until at least Wednesday.
"He's gotten some pretty good work in this week, and I just don't want to start over next week," Parcells said as his daily briefing with reporters between practices. "Hopefully, he'll get his first real game action next weekend."
When the afternoon session began, Owens came out and went to the stationary bike on the sideline, the same spot where he spent much of the two weeks when he didn't practice. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, after speaking with Parcells on the field, talked with Owens for about 10 minutes.
Jones left before practice ended without speaking to reporters. Parcells doesn't talk after practice.
Since returning to the field Wednesday, Owens had gone through individual and team drills. He ran routes at full speed, making hard cuts without any apparent problems.
After the team's only workout Friday, Owens said he was "a little bit sorer than usual" but was still day to day. He wasn't sure if he would play Monday night.
Parcells said the decision to hold Owens out was final.
"Nothing will change my mind," Parcells said. "It's the natural course of events. I don't think you can play pro football practicing four to five days. I think you need more than that."
When asked how much time Owens needed, Parcells said, "I don't know the player that well, but certainly more than what he's had so far."
Bledsoe will get his first preseason action Monday night. While eager to play with Owens, he was not surprised by Parcells' decision.
"Bill has always been pretty steadfast in saying if you don't practice the whole week, then you're not playing. I remember that from way back," Bledsoe said. "He still trying to get all the way healthy. The big thing is to make sure that he's ready for the regular season."
The Cowboys will have only two days of true practices before their next preseason game Saturday night at home against San Francisco, one of Owens' former teams.
Owens first felt a twinge in his hamstring on Aug. 2, but an MRI taken three days later was clear. Owens flew in several doctors and trainers, plus a hyperbaric chamber, because he still didn't feel right.
During Cowboys practices, Owens became a regular on the stationary bike. One day last week, he wore the uniform of the Discovery Channel pro cycling team - sporting the similar blue and silver colors of the Cowboys - to poke fun at all the time he was pedaling on the sideline.
Owens remained in California last weekend when the Cowboys played their preseason opener in Seattle. When the team returned to the practice field Monday, Owens started doing more in his rehabilitation and missed only three more sessions before finally donning the pads again and joining his teammates.
"Even with the time that I've had off, just being Lance Armstrong on the bikes over here, I feel like I've still come in and they've put me in situations where I kind of had to push myself a little bit," Owens said Friday. "My conditioning, my wind is not where it needs to be. But it's a 16-week season, so I know my conditioning will be there."

T.O. means more time off
NFL notebook
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

<!--ARTICLE BODY TEXT-->Terrell Owens won't be in any hurry to get off the bicycle this time.
Like he did for most practices during training camp in Oxnard, Calif., Owens rode a stationary bicycle Wednesday when the Dallas Cowboys held their first workout at home. The receiver said he reaggravated his left hamstring injury by returning to practice too soon last week.
"At this point, yeah, I will be close to 100 percent before I get back on the field," Owens said. "I'm not going to jeopardize my health just because of speculation or anything like that."
Owens characterized his injury as a "severe pull" and said he almost certainly will miss his third straight preseason game. The Cowboys play at home Saturday night against San Francisco, Owens' original team.
"It's frustrating, but it's not where I need it to be to play and perform like I need to," Owens said. "So at this point, I'm going to be smart about it."
Owens had returned to practice after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones suggested that the receiver needed to learn how to practice at less than 100 percent. His first practice back came only hours after coach Bill Parcells reiterated that Owens needed to be on the field.
"I felt like I was never pressured to get back on the field. I just tried to compromise with some people, just try to be around the team and get back out there," Owens said. "It just flared up again."
Drew Henson won't be on the Cowboys roster this season, and the onetime Reds third-base prospect once considered Dallas' quarterback of the future might be on the trading block. "I just didn't see enough," Parcells said.

T.O. might not play until opener

STEPHEN HAWKINS

Associated Press

<!-- begin body-content -->IRVING, Texas - Terrell Owens missed practice again Thursday, virtually ensuring he will miss his third straight preseason game for the Dallas Cowboys this weekend and might not play until the regular-season opener.
Owens missed 15 of 27 training camp workouts in Oxnard, Calif., and the first two exhibition games before the Cowboys resumed practice at home Wednesday.
Owens said Wednesday he aggravated his left hamstring injury by returning to practice too soon last week. The receiver characterized his injury as a "severe pull" and said he wasn't going to jeopardize his health by rushing back again.
The Cowboys play San Francisco, Owens' original team, on Saturday night. They play Minnesota their last preseason game five nights later.
It's possible Owens might not play in a game until the Sept. 10 opener at Jacksonville. He hasn't played in a game with quarterback Drew Bledsoe, and the Dallas offense is different from the West Coast scheme Owens played in for the 49ers and Philadelphia.
Owens didn't talk to reporters Thursday, but Bledsoe said the key is for the receiver to get healthy.
"We can't have the guy force himself back on the field too soon and then lose him for the year. The important thing is for him to get healthy and get back out there so he can help us when the games count," Bledsoe said. "He's been in all the meetings, he knows what's going on. When he came back in practice last week, he stepped right in and didn't make mistakes, did a nice job."
Owens said Wednesday he's not concerned about the possibility of not playing in the preseason.
"I don't really have any doubts about if I'm going to perform or not," he said.
After missing 14 consecutive training camp practices and the preseason opener in Seattle because of the hamstring problem that has bothered him all month, Owens returned for five practices last week. He then missed the final full workout in California.
Owens first felt a twinge in his hamstring Aug. 2, but an MRI taken three days later was clear. Owens said another MRI this week also was negative, with only a little fluid in the hamstring.
"Just because the MRI doesn't show anything, that doesn't mean that I'm not hurting," Owens said.

T.O. has been fined $9500. by the Cowboys for missing mandatory offensive meetings and rehab.
Same shit...different team.

Re: "Owens vowed to be a better man and a better teammate in Dallas."

Some players only have to "turn over a new leaf" to change. This guy will have to "turn over an entire tree".

It didn't take long for some Cowboys fans to have their doubts about T.O.

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Terrell Owens has been fined $9,500 for missing a team meeting and a rehabilitation session and being late to an offensive meeting, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday.
"That's our club business. That's going to be accounted for," team owner Jerry Jones told the newspaper.
The incidents occurred Friday, the team's final day preparing for a preseason game against San Francisco. The Cowboys beat the 49ers 17-7, making them 3-0 this preseason without Owens playing any of the games because of a hamstring injury that's also kept him out of 19 of 31 practices since the start of training camp.
Neither team officials nor Owens' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, immediately returned calls to The Associated Press seeking comment Sunday.
During a postgame television interview, Jones did not mention the fine but answered several other questions about Owens. Jones said his only concern with the receiver is "injury, not all this other stuff you hear about."
Owens' past is filled with run-ins with quarterbacks, coaches and others in his own organization. San Francisco and Philadelphia got rid of him, but the Cowboys welcomed him with open arms and a lucrative contract in March, four days after the Eagles released him.
Owens vowed to be a better man and a better teammate in Dallas. While the fine is the most drastic, he already has done plenty to stand out.
He missed much of the offseason training program -- with permission -- and turned his hamstring injury into an attention-getter by flying in specialists to help him rehabilitate and wearing a cycling team outfit one day while pedaling a stationary bicycle.
After returning to practice for several days, coach Bill Parcells ruled him out of a Monday night game and Owens hasn't practiced since. He said he aggravated the injury because the club pushed him too hard. When Parcells said this week that he needs to see Owens on the field, T.O. responded that there's 10 years of tape to show what he can do.
Jones seemed to downplay the drama surrounding Owens' injury by noting that Carolina's Steve Smith and Pittsburgh's Hines Ward also have been slowed by hamstring injuries without drawing the same scrutiny as Owens. He also recalled Deion Sanders' ability to play well after flying in from baseball games and missing long stretches of practice.
"I know this -- when he's healthy, he's going to help us win these ballgames," Jones said.
The Cowboys play their final preseason game Thursday night at home against Minnesota. The opener is Sept. 10 at Jacksonville.

Same shit...different team.
Same shit? Really? I haven't seen him get into fist fights with his teammates in the lockerroom, I haven't seen him get sent home from practice by Parcells, I haven't seen him complain about his contract, and I haven't seen him call Bledsoe gay or incompetent.

He missed a meeting. He got fined. If it were practically any other player in the league, it wouldn't even be a story.

And they haven't even played their first regular season game yet. It's pretty damned early in the season, in his first year of his contract, to have problems with your head coach and team rules already.

You're right though, I must be jumping to conclusions...I mean, T.O. has absolutely no history of being a self centered asshole who never could manage to be a team player.

Nope, nothing more than a missed meeting...sounds like everything is just peachy. Like I said...same shit.

There aren't any problems with Parcells, or any of the other coaches, or the front office, or his teammates. Unless you consider his "10 years of film" comment to be problematic, which would just be another case of someone who's sitting on the edge of their seat waiting for him to fail blowing something (else) out of proportion.

Yup, it's pretty evident that he's resorting back to his asshole ways. I mean, injuring and re-injuring his hamstring, missing one team meeting....how dare he.

Seems peachy to me. Like I said...blowing things out of proportion.

Sticky whatever you want, I don't remember ever saying that there couldn't or wouldn't be any problems. I just don't see how there are any similarities between what he did in Philadelphia and San Francisco, and him missing a meeting and x amount of practices due to an injury in Dallas. It's evident that people are actually trying to make mountains out of mole hills.

319 - Owens biggest problem may not be falling of his bike.
The connection between Glenn and Bledsoe is very tight. Bledsoe to Glenn is probably only out-done by Manning to Harrison as a QB to Receiver tandem. (Though Manning / Harrison is on one team, Bledsoe to Glenn has been spread over many seasons and different teams - probably making it even more remarkable).
My point is this, it takes time and repetition for a QB to get fully in sync with a receiver. Owens has been sidelined throughout this fall camp and has yet to play a meaningful down in a Cowboys uniform in pre-season. This means that Owens will be hit twice in the full season, or whenever he actually takes the field following his hamstring getting all better. Hit one is that opposing CBs will still respect his ability and take him on as a first stop. That may free up Glenn whose pre-season form promises good things for the regular season. More catches for Glenn and others, fewer stats for Owens.
Add to this that Owens will not have gained full sync with Bledsoe. That may mean he isn't exactly in the right place, or where Bledsoe expects him to be. The most natural tendency will be for Bledsoe to find Glenn or a TE, or a third receiver should the down and distance dictate 3 wide-outs.

If we are really looking at the Owens of old we all know what will happen. Owens will pout, and Owens will create a ruckus. What Owens may not be doing, for a fair while though, is putting up the numbers expected of him based on his March contract.

Yeah but by this point when he started in Philly, things were great, he was making plays in the preseason, getting ready to have a great season. If there is already a missed meeting, weeks of missed practice, self-centered quotes to the media, theres no doubt that he is already setting a fast pace to problems already. As he once said about Jeff Garcia, "'If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat."
