Concerns about coaching staff changes? Shouldn't incoming recruits want changes from this staff?

It's about relationships. And I can see kids having 2nd thoughts if they don't at least know who their position coach is going to be when they get here. Sure, it could change the next day at the school they choose, but then they just head to the portal if they don't like it after a year. Closer to home and NIL $$$. Endless cycle. Sucks for the sport I used to love.

Its disappointing to see kids throw away literal years of relationship building with coaches and staffs for a 48 hour romance with a new suitor. But you also see stuff like this in real life - that's why guys leave their wives for strippers (with or without pet monkeys)

That's recruiting for you..... NIL has created a whole new aspect of the game - take the guaranteed payday today instead of the potentially much larger one down the road.

again. If the kid didn’t get the warm and fuzzy that Coombs was still gonna be there. So what again is he throwing away relationship wise?

Coombs, Day, Barnes, Pantoni, Marroti, and so on. I'm guessing each of these guys have gotten to know these recruits and their families fairly well over the past year or two. I see what you're saying about Coombs, but if he's going to flip on a dime because the Texas boosters are throwing cash at him, he doesn't value relationships very much anyway. And let's face it, the boosters in Texas aren't going to let Sarkisian and his staff hang around for another 5-7 season - especially after throwing this much cash out to buy big-name recruits. So, staff stability between tOSU and Texas is an apples to oranges comparison.

Honestly that’s just good business.

Mariotti - probably not … dont know that he’s allow to recruit.. and he’s S&C … they aren’t friends with any recruit LOL
Pantoni isn’t gonna be coaching him day in and day out… neither is Day….
Barnes seems to be lacking any type of recruiting skill
so basically you’re left with Coombs

again if this is my guy who’s recruited me and gonna coach me day in and day out… and I dont have the warm and fuzzies that he’s gonna be back as my coach… I wouldn’t call that flipping on a dime…

All OSU had to do is match the NIL money today and have the NFL development pedigree.

They fell short on one or both.

Does the university pay the NIL money, or is that between the sponsors and the athlete? I was under the impression (perhaps erroneously) that the University had nothing to do with the putting the players in touch with sponsors/negotiations/contracts/payments/appearances/ etc.

To me, there’s no way that a guy should get all the way to signing day and not know who his position coach will be. I think OSU made a mistake by not making the changes needed before now. Everyone knows that at least one coach has to leave, but nobody knows who it is. OSU seems to be getting left behind by trying to do things a certain way.

The year Urban came in right before NSD, didn't he bring in a new staff? He closed quite strong that year and after having our worst year in decades under Fickell. And every 2011 commit knew that Fickell wouldn't be coaching them, and probably didn't know their position coach. OSU will be fine. Getting Knowles was our biggest commitment. If he shores up the defense the kids will come. Bringing some manhood back to the lines is more important than today

You’re comparing apples and tomatoes.

Head coaching changes ALWAYS come with the temporary boost in recruiting. Hiring a relatively unknown DC isn’t going to do that. Regardless of how good the hire may be. And then the guys who have been recruiting these players for the last couple of years can’t even guarantee they’ll be here next year. Why would they choose to play for a guy that can’t even explain how they’ll fit yet?

Having some lame duck coach in a kid’s living room isn’t doing any favors.

Fickell didn't register a big uptick and recruiting and if I remember neither did Jim Tressel. HCs don't always get recruiting wins, especially last minute ones. I don't see Veneables getting many last minute commits in OU either.
If Knowles can make a competent defense who isn't afraid to tackle in '22, then the recruits will come in. Osu has talent, and this was a very good class, but having a good coordinator will make all the difference in the world

It’s still early. Oklahoma is going to make some noise. Also, Venables made it a point to not recruit players and recruits from Clemson. If he did that, he could’ve taken Toriano Pride, Jihaad Campbell, and Daylen Everette.

If just having a competent unit is all it takes, why do coaches place a premium on being a great recruiter? Ohio State’s OL has been better than competent for the last 5 or so years and we still have to hear about the recruiting misses there. There’s more to it than just fielding a competent unit.
