The money will get downplayed, but the repeated recruiting violations by hosting visits during recruiting dead periods is the serious offense.

This. At least with respect to the money.
Players from many schools have admitted to getting money; it never amounts to anything.
This isn't just an SEC thing; it's even happened at Wisconsin.
There are other situations where a recruit obviously got impermissible benefits, like Alabama running backs from poor families getting pulled over in escalades. Nothing comes of that either.
