Danny White's background provides realistic possibility of Lane Kiffin returning to Tennessee

Danny White has been hired as Tennessee’s athletics director.

He has served in the same capacity at Buffalo (2012-15) and UCF (2015-2021).
At Buffalo, White hired Lance Leipold away from his alma mater, Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he won six NCAA Division III national championships (2007, 2009–2011, 2013–2014).

White hired Scott Frost as head coach at UCF.

When Frost departed for the same position at his alma mater, Nebraska, after a 13-0 2017 season, White hired Josh Heupel. Heupel came to UCF from Missouri as the Tigers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

White tends to be creative in a hiring process, going in a direction where others are not thinking.

That thought process could realistically go in a direction of Ole Miss’ head coach Lane Kiffin.

No, actually I'm too old to know that song. I know (and still listen to) the songs from the late 50s, 60s and 70s, not the 80s and beyond. As far as I know Toto was Dorothy's dog and I've never heard of that song (nor could I recite any of it's lyrics). Maybe I have heard it somewhere (like in a movie or recorded music in a bar/mall/store, etc.); however, If I did, I don't pay any attention and/or know what it was. I don't listen to the radio very often, but when I do it's the "oldies" and "sports talk" stations.

I'll say it would be a great opportunity for Tony Elliot...

1. If he has or can maintain a good relationship with Danny White (the new AD).

2. If Tennessee has reasonable expectations, i.e. accept continued improvement over multiple years.

3. Tennessee has a decent number of Power 5 level school recruits and I'm sure Tennessee can out recruit Vanderbilt for the instate talent.

4. Tennessee really has a good football tradition and fan base.

5. It's in the SEC East. The SEC just means more and it is in the division that Alabama is not in.

1. I see that as doable.

2. They don’t have reasonable expectations. In fairness to their fans, they’ve been fed absolute shit for the last 15 years, but from what I gather, they seem to think they should be competing for SEC titles regularly.

3. Decent? Yes, but not enough to match up with Georgia, Florida or Louisiana. And they can absolutely outrecruit Vandy, but not (in many, if not most cases) Bammer, UGA, UF, LSU. Kids being recruited right now have zero memory of Tennessee being relevant. They only know them as the team that’s made just 4 bowls in the last 10 years and is basically a 5-7/7-6 program.

4. Solid tradition, sure. But again, it’s been over 15 years since they were relevant. Miss St and Ole Miss have been more relevant nationally the last 15 years. And their fan base? Passionate for sure, but look no further than the search that resulted in Pruitt for why “passionate” isn’t always a good thing.

5. It is the easier of two divisions as long as Saban is still in Tuscaloosa, but Tennessee has a LONG ways to go to even approach UGA or UF.

Maybe White stabilizes things, but their athletics department has been toxic for a while now. And look at who they’ve had since Fulmer:

Kiffin: Bailed after one 7-6 season then flamed out in LA. Needed a trip to the Nick Saban Rehab for Wayward Coaches before getting another HC gig.

Dooley: a puzzling hire from the start, but went 15-21 in three years and got the boot. The Vols job basically torpedoed his HC career, though it’s questionable how promising it was in the first place.

Jones: Was a hire that they were perceived to have settled for after not attracting any bigger names. Made it almost 5 years, including semi-promising 9-4 seasons in yrs 3 & 4 before the wheels came off and he was fired after starting year 5 4-6. Also took a trip to the Nick Saban Rehab for Wayward Coaches and just got the HC gig at Arkansas...State.

Pruitt: Another “settled for” hire after a long, absolute shit show of a search that included their “passionate” fan base making enough noise for them to back off hiring Greg Schiano. Turns out, Schiano probably would have been the better choice than Nick Saban’s DC getting his first HC gig. Not only were the results on the field bad, he actually got fired for cause and may have UT in hot water with the NCAA because of serious infractions.

I don’t know. Maybe somebody sees it as a challenge and thinks they can put them back to where they were a quarter century ago, but there are a lot of issues/challenges there right now...including possible NCAA muck to wade through. I have a hard time seeing anybody with options taking that job. My guess is they end up with another Dooley or Butch Jones type hire...a guy with some success at a Go5 job just looking for more money and a shot in one of the big boy conferences...and then end up right back here again in 3 or 4 years.

Hell, they may end up having to stick with Kevin Steele, a solid DC, but a 62 year old guy with a 9-37 career record as a HC.
