Tebow, religion, and eyeblack

Evan

I bleed Scarlet and Grey, all the way from England
I have no problem with people who pray and stuff, but when they zoomed in on Tebow praying before the 2nd half began I just shook my head. I don't think God has money on Tebow winning this game. Of course, Tebow and the national media thinks he is God's son soo maybe he was just asking dad for some help. If he was praying to stay healthy then my bad, but I bet Tebow was like "God you have always been there for me, so help me overcome this hurdle and win this game."

Also, earlier when he got his ass knocked down out of bounds, why the hell were Florida fans cheering and he was jumping up and down? He just got his ass knocked down out of bounds and he is jumping up and down and waving his arms like he scored a TD.

This circle jerk is getting old......
not only that, but public prayer is against God's will:

Matthew 6:5 - 7

5. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Jesus says you must definitely not pray as the hypocrites pray.

I'll drink to that.

Next shot of Tebow has him quietly praying: Oh Lord won't you buy me Mercedes Benz ...

Those quotes are said in reference to those who publicly flaunt there fate. I don't think Tebow looks for a camera when he's about to say a quick prayer. Probably more like a camera guy sees him praying and scrambles to get "the shot"

Again, its about intent, and in my mind Tim Tebow is not intending to pray as a form of showing out.

As a football player though his team has alot of work ahead of them.

It's simple, Tim. You failed God, and he doesn't love you any more.

You don't have to root for him. But you guys make it seem as if he personally punched you in the gut. He hasn't done shit to you.

And for a guy who grew up in lockdown sheltered mode, getting uncomfortable when some Gainesville skank takes off her top is not unruly.

He reminds me of the guy who stands on corners or outside public places and tries to convert me to his religion.

I'd rather be punched in the gut.

I'm just glad that the idolizing beyond making me barf fawning will come to a temporary stop. I have no problem with Tebow himself as I don't know the guy personally but from what I have seen on TV he is a nice enough guy. I think more of you are just pissed off at the media and their perception of him rather than Tebow himself.
Exactly. It's not that he is constantly putting up big numbers against Florida Prep College and beating his chest and making speeches and circumcising Filipinos and putting biblical things on himself and all that that pisses me off as much as the fact that I can't turn on a sporting event anymore without hearing about it.

Link to the TU article about the loss. The comments are a priceless insight into what I have to deal with down here.

Tim Tebow

Submitted by phyllisthemissionary on Sat. 12/5/2009 at 8:14 pm You have given some of us some of the best years of our lives. You have been a beacon of light & joy, a source of comfort and somebody we could be proud of on a national level.
I know this is difficult, but DO NOT put ANY negativity upon yourself whatsoever. NOTHING happens outside of the will of God. I know you know this, but you are not being punished, humbled or anything else and DO NOT let the Devil try to convince you otherwise.
God bless you, Brother. You are a son of the Most High God - THE BEST...and don't you ever forget it! :)
Congratulations to Alabama

Submitted by phyllisthemissionary on Sat. 12/5/2009 at 8:18 pm ...if we've got to lose to somebody, it might as well be you. :)
Congratulations to the rest of our team, Saint Urban, the other coaches, et al.

It is "lose" ... and it is "ecstatic".

As far as Tebow is concerned, I find it pretty difficult to dislike the kid, either on or off the field. I bet that every Tebow hater would be singing a different tune right now if he had been quarterbacking Ohio State for the past four years.

Would I hate the kid? Probably not. Would I feel very uncomfortable with him using his role as a football player at my alma mater--a public university--to shove his religion down everyone's throat? Absolutely.

And for those who think one's being critical of his little eye shadow gimmick, makes me a religious bigot, so be it. I am eagerly awaiting the day in the near future when some black muslim kid wants to put Koran verses on his eye shadow. I'll be very interested to see how embraced he is by the athletic establishment.

If he plays for OSU its cool. Anyone else and he's a fucking terrorist. Pretty simple stuff really. :wink2:

Buckiprof had it right but just so no one misinterprets, I am someone who holds strong religious values. They may not be the same denomination as Tim Tebow or Muhammad Ali, but I have them.

My problem is not with Tim Tebow. It's with the whole lot of athletes who point to the heavens when they score a touchdown, hit a buzzer-beater, or finish a race. My problem with that is that it suggests that somehow God was on THEIR side and these other schmucks, well, they just didn't pray hard enough.

In my mind, it is the height of hypocrisy to assume that somehow a God who supposedly created and loves all of humanity somehow picked you out of the crowd to reward with your sporting achievement to the disadvantage of all others.

I believe that if you're religious, the best way to show it is in the privacy of your own home.

One more point about Tebow's behaviour in particular. Everybody knows that God belongs to us all. He created the world as we know it. He is above the elements. We have no idea what religion really has it right, or if any due in the final analysis. What we do know is that God isn't Morgan Freeman. God isn't George Burns. God isn't rooting for Florida to win a bloody football game.
