The link to the story on Fow News is dead, but the outrage remains.
martinss01;1353211; said:the color in and of itself has 0 value. its the fact that one associates the color red with a negative. you can change the color of failure to anything you want. make it the most tranquil color of blue you can find. won't change anything. once the kids associate it with what it is being used for your going to get the same reaction. but then, thats a good thing. believe it or not, failure is supposed to be a negative experience. thats why they call it failure and not success.
this whole "children are under high stress and suffer from depression" crap is rather laughable. these so called "experts" act like prior to yesterday morning being a kid was fucking happy lala time in the safe and secure world of rainbow land.
30 yrs ago you could drag your wife out the front door by her hair and beat the living shit out of her in front of the neighbors and noone would say a damn thing unless you made too much noise in the process.
50 years ago our children weren't our future. they were manual labor and they damn well better not even think about touching a single morsel of food before the old man finished his plate and said he was done. make a peep at the wrong time and you'll likely get a backhand.
100 years ago they were our slave labor working everything from farm hand to factory work starting at ages far younger than those offing themselves for getting an A- on a paper.
200 years ago child mortality rates were so bad in europe only 50% survived to see their first birthday. 25% made it to adulthood and only 1 in 10 reached adulthood without the loss of 1 or both parents.
yeah, childhood depression and hardship is a "new" thing and if we just take away those nasty red pens that cause it their o so delicate psyche's will finally be able to return to rainbow happy land. give me a fucking break.
OCBuckWife;1352160; said:That's exactly what I am talking about. Whatever happened to improving self esteem by actually DOING THINGS and accomplishing things through hardship? Being proud of yourself for sticking it out? Instead, we give trophies to everyone "just for trying." Screw that noise. Win it by being better at it than the other kid and then point and laugh at that same kid.
Multiple valedictorians? That's already a wimped-up policy.JohnDorian;1353465; said:This is exactly what screwed me over in high school. Going through high school we were all led to believe that the top 5 in the class would be valedictorians. I was #1, and two of my friends were #2 and #4. However, last year, our senior year, they decided to change the policy. Instead of having valedictorians they decided to give a certificate to the top 20% of the class saying we were above the rest. My friends and I, needless to say were pissed. But at least everyone felt good about themselves right? We came to find out later that one of the guidance counselor's son was #7 and knew he was going to get left out so she changed the system. But hey, at least I still got into OSU, that's all that matters.
