Heuerman?s Heisman pose
Junior quarterback Braxton Miller set the school record for total offense last season (3,310 yards), and according to him, his coaches and fellow players, he was just scratching the surface in terms of his capability. Thus, tight end Jeff Heuerman was asked what that means in terms of Miller?s potential in this, his third year as the starter.
Heuerman smiled, backed up and struck the Heisman Trophy pose, his left arm tucked underneath like he was clutching a football, his right extended in the classic stiff-arm.
?I think he?ll have a real big year,? Heuerman said.

Hockey. Jeff Heuerman will tell you that was his first love.
He started playing at age 5, fascinated by bloodied players coming off the ice after fights.
He also tried baseball, basketball and lacrosse and liked hunting and fishing. They couldn?t match hockey, though.
But football, yeah football. That caught his eye.
After years on the ice, Heuerman gave football a try before his freshman year of high school ? football workouts during the week, hockey games on weekends.
After fourth months, emotional and exhausted, he knew he had to make a choice.
Heuerman chose football ? a sport he hadn?t played in a game.
But Heuerman caught up in football quickly. Helped by a caring Barron Collier High freshman football coach, a relentless work ethic, a growth spurt and some natural ability, he became a talented player who drew the attention of Ohio State.
The 6-foot-6, 250-pound junior is a starting tight end with the Buckeyes, ranked No. 2 in most college football polls.
?Yeah, I love it,? Heuerman said. ?The campus, my teammates, the coaches. It?s awesome.
?I?m glad it turned out this way.?

“Jeff Heuerman has earned his way into being one of the top two receivers on the team. Him and Philly Brown are probably the most reliable right now, according to our quaterback. We will always have one tight end on the field at Ohio State this year, and at times we’ll have two.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With still more than a week before Ohio State opened its season, Jeff Heuerman smiled widely as he confidently struck a Heisman Trophy pose in support of quarterback Braxton Miller.
Nearly a month later in Ohio State’s 52-34 win over California, Heuerman made multiple key blocks on the edge, one of which sprung Dontre Wilson down the sideline as the freshman showcased his speed and playmaking ability.
It doesn’t bother Heuerman that most of his actions are in support of someone else’s cause, and he hasn’t struggled to embrace his role as starting tight end, even if that means another season his expectations aren’t realized from a receiving standpoint.
“We have a lot of playmakers,” Heuerman said. “There are a lot of guys that can touch the ball and make plays when they get it.”
Through Ohio State’s first three games, Heuerman hasn’t found his turn. He has only four receptions for 45 yards during that span, and his biggest reception – a 25-yard strike down the middle of the field against San Diego State – came as a surprise because the play wasn’t designed for him.

Awesome game for Heuerman! Another serious weapon for defenses to have to worry about.
Heuerman ... 4 catches, 43 yards.
Vannett ... 2 catches, 27 yards.
They combined for 25% of the total catches (24).
Ohio State football: Cleats replace skates for Heuerman

For almost as long he could remember while growing up in Naples, Fla., Jeff Heuerman eagerly anticipated the moment each day when he could put on his padded pants, don his shoulder pads and jersey, strap on his helmet … and then lace up his skates, grab his stick and careen onto the ice?
"I started playing hockey when I was really young, like 4 or 5,” the Ohio State tight end said, “and I really liked it."
He also was very good. The flow, the contact, the teamwork, the shooting — all of it came naturally to a youngster who was big, coordinated, speedy and a student of the sport.
Now it’s hockey season, and with the unbeaten Ohio State football team having the weekend off, Heuerman could be excused for letting his mind drift back to the rink. But he said he won’t let it happen.
“To be honest, I try to avoid it,” he said. “I don’t watch it. I don’t follow it. I just stay away from it.”
