TE Jake Stoneburner (Official Thread)

With training camp over, Stoneburner sees his skills as a good fit for the Packers' offense. It's worth tracking his development as AndrewQuarless continues to shake off the rust from his year-long injury layoff. There was not much separation among the tight ends behind Jermichael Finley.

Stoneburner believes the Packers would be comfortable elevating him to the roster if necessary.

"They split out their tight ends a lot and like to use them in the open field and split the seam," Stoneburner said. "That's something I've been doing for a while, something I did in college, so it's something I was comfortable with. My blocking came along pretty well, but where I was behind was my special teams, because I didn't play it in college.

"There's definitely a learning curve with special teams, but I felt like I grew with that."

Packers tight end Jake Stoneburner has been added to the Packers’ 53-man roster.

Randall Cobb placed on IR for spell
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel

Green Bay — Given the option of signing a veteran or going with someone from his practice squad, Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson will surprise you once in a lunar eclipse.

Tuesday, the moon did not dim in the sky.

Desperate for wide receiver help, Thompson bypassed veteran free agents such as Devery Henderson, Laurent Robinson and Steve Breaston in favor of two practice squad members who may be pressed into service right away.

Thompson signed wide receiver Myles White and tight end Jake Stoneburner, both undrafted rookies, to the 53-man roster to help mitigate the injury loss of receivers Randall Cobb (broken leg) and James Jones (knee).

To make room for White and Stoneburner, Thompson placed Cobb and offensive lineman Greg Van Roten (foot) on injured reserve.

Cobb, however, goes on the list with a "designated to return" classification, which means he will be eligible to practice in six weeks and to play in eight. Thus, he will at most be able to play in three more regular-season games, the first a Dec. 15 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys in Irving, Texas.

In placing Cobb on the list, the Packers affirmed the Journal Sentinel's report Monday that Cobb would miss six to eight weeks with a broken fibula. All coach Mike McCarthy would say at his news conference Monday was that Cobb would be out "multiple weeks."

In Van Roten's case, his season is over. A team is allowed only one injured reserve player with the "designated to return" classification per year.

By adding White and Stoneburner, Thompson's 53-man roster now has 14 rookies, including six who were not drafted. At a minimum, the Packers will have seven rookies on their 46-man game-day roster against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

There is a slight chance that Jones will be able to play, but the Packers can't count on that and will prepare to go into the game with Jordy Nelson, Jarrett Boykin and White as their only receivers.

The reason Stoneburner was added is fairly obvious. The Packers plan to use tight end Jermichael Finley as a third wide receiver frequently and having Stoneburner up would allow McCarthy to have his normal allotment of four tight ends, two of whom play a large number of snaps on special teams.

Stoneburner, along with Brandon Bostick, also can help fill holes at receiver. As a senior at Ohio State, the 6-foot-3, 249-pound Stoneburner played wide receiver, catching 16 passes for 269 yards (16.8) and four touchdowns.

Stoneburner, White transition from excitement to expectations

Jake Stoneburner caught a touchdown against St. Louis but lost a fumble against Seattle.

GREEN BAY – Myles White and Jake Stoneburner each got the good news on Tuesday morning. They’d both been promoted to the injury-depleted Green Bay Packers’ 53-man roster from the practice squad.

“I was just driving around and I got a phone call,” Stoneburner said. “I wasn’t sure if I was getting cut or called up.”

Both Stoneburner, an undrafted rookie tight end from Ohio State, and White, an undrafted rookie wide receiver from Louisiana Tech, were downright giddy. The news meant their lockers would be moving from the auxiliary “Green Mile” locker room to the big room, their paychecks would be a bit heftier, and they’d almost certainly be active for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns at Lambeau Field.

And then, it was time to go to practice.

“Yesterday it was pretty surreal. Getting called up, I got really excited. Just like, ‘Man, I was finally able to do it,’” Stoneburner said at his locker Wednesday. “And then today, it was like, ‘Oh, I’ve actually got to go out and perform.’

“Which is not a bad thing; I’m really excited about it. It’s awesome to be able to go out there and contribute and help this team. It’s been a dream for me to be able to step out on an NFL football field. So a lot of emotions right now, but overall I’m pretty excited.”

Indeed, the Packers are counting on Stoneburner, who was promoted after third-year tight end Ryan Taylor unexpectedly underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday, and White, who was added after wide receivers Randall Cobb (broken fibula, out at least eight weeks) and James Jones (sprained posterior cruciate knee ligament, possibly out for Sunday).

“You’ve got to be locked in. This is a perfect example. Obviously my situation and Jake Stoneburner’s situation, you can be on the practice squad one minute and the next your number is called,” said White, who made a good impression during training camp and was one of two wide receivers signed to the practice squad after final cuts. “You’ve got to be ready. And if you’re not ready, you have to face the consequences.”

Tight end Jake Stoneburner

Oct. 18, 2013

Green Bay — Tight end Jake Stoneburner decided to sign with the Green Bay Packers after going undrafted for this very reason. He knew the team's history of promoting from within. So now, the rookie from Ohio State gets his chance. At Ohio State, the 6-foot-3, 249-pounder was a tight end his first three seasons and an H-back/receiver his final season under Urban Meyer. Stoneburner sat down with the Journal Sentinel's Tyler Dunne to discuss his love for "weird" video games, his crush, his inspiration and what he could bring to Green Bay's offense.

Where did you grow up and what was it like? I grew up in Dublin, Ohio. It's 10 miles from OSU's campus. It's a nice suburb. Jack Nicklaus is from there. It's a pretty affluent area.

What did you do? Played football, hung out with friends. I was a big-time golfer. I loved golfing. But always football and basketball, just that kind of stuff.

What's one thing people don't know about Jake Stoneburner? I'm a huge video-gamer. When I have time, I really dive into some really weird video games. Me and my college buddies would stay up multiple nights, all night playing video games. I'm not much a Madden or NCAA type of guy. I play really weird and random video games.

What games? Have you ever heard of "Skyrim?" "Dragon Age." "Empires." "Bioshock." Just really weird games. I play the normal games, too. But these are the types of games I really get into and play for a while.

So you're at Ohio State and you stay inside playing video games? I had my fair share of fun. Obviously I got arrested for it. But, yeah, sometimes Friday nights, Saturday nights, my best friend who's on the team, we'd plug up two TVs next to each other, he'd bring his Xbox over and we'd just game all night.

What did you learn from your arrest (for urinating on a public building and fleeing police)? At the time, I thought it was a minor arrest and I still think it is. I didn't realize the effect it would have on Ohio State and the team and Coach Meyer. I realized it was not just me who was affected. Obviously, I wasn't happy with myself. But it put a bad light on Ohio State, so I realized that even if I get in trouble it's embarrassing for me but it's embarrassing for a lot of other people.

While I never really hung out with him in high school, I never took him for the type of guy who would nerd out over those games. Dang, we could be best friends, you and I Jake. After all, we both live in Green Bay.

Now... back to reality.

Stoneburner says Green Bay reminds him of Columbus
By Martin Hendricks Special To Packer Plus
Nov. 25, 2013

Green Bay — Jake Stoneburner grew up near Columbus, Ohio, just 10 miles from the Ohio State campus.

"I was a Buckeye from the second I was born," said Stoneburner, a rookie tight end. "My dad never played football in his life, but I just grew up a huge Buckeye fan and that's the only place I wanted to go."

When he played football in his Buckeye jersey in the backyard, he like to emulate his favorite Buckeye player, now a Green Bay teammate: A.J. Hawk.

"Since eighth grade, I've been watching A.J.," Stoneburner said. "And now we're teammates."

Stoneburner followed Hawk to Ohio State, but he was not a first-round draft choice like the Packer starting middle linebacker. His draft stock dropped after having his scholarship revoked in June 2012 for urinating in public and fleeing police.

He was reinstated by the team in August and the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder's speed and athleticism were utilized in a wide receiver/H-back role in the 12-0 Buckeyes' offensive scheme.

After going undrafted, Stoneburner signed with the Packers an hour after the draft concluded. He was listed as the No. 7 tight end entering training camp but showed enough promise to get a contract offer for the team's practice squad.

Stoneburner spent six weeks on the team's practice squad before being summoned to the regular-season roster last month after the receiving corps was rocked with injuries to Jermichael Finley, Randall Cobb and James Jones.

He has played sparingly on offense and has yet to record a catch, but Stoneburner is playing extensively on special teams and trying to earn opportunities.

"Just try to make an impact on this team, whether it's special teams, offense, or whatever they need me to do," he said. "I just want to make sure I'm always ready and that they can count on me to really do anything."

Here are a few facts on Jacob Charles Stoneburner:

Born: Aug. 25, 1989.

Nickname: "Stoney."

Residence: Dublin, Ohio.

Degree: Family resource management.

Favorite flicks: I'm a Christopher Nolan fan, so I like all the Batmans. "Inception" is probably my favorite of all of them. I like that kind of movie, kind of dark, kind of mind-blowing.

What I watch on TV: I watch "Game of Thrones," "Homeland," "Family Guy," "Big Bang Theory." Those are my four favorite shows.

What I'm reading: I really don't read too much, but when I do I read all the Harry Potter books.

What I enjoy away from football: Video games and I like golfing. I'm a homebody; I like just couching it. Sitting on the couch, watching TV, doing nothing really. Relaxing.

Music I listen to: I listen to anything. I'm more into EDM, electronic music. It's kind of different, but something I grew up on in Columbus.

My favorite meal: Steak from High Park back in Columbus. It's a killer. A place I grew up on. I like fillets, but they're a little small. I like the big meat.

My ride: I drive an Avalanche. I have an Infiniti, but I left that back home. I'm more of a truck guy now up here in Green Bay.

Teams I followed: Growing up in Columbus, it's either Browns or Bengals. I'm probably the Bengals a little bit, but I'm an Ohio State fan. My dad grew up watching the Cowboys and the Packers.

Athletes I looked up to: I really like Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman. Those were my dudes. I'm a huge LeBron fan being from Ohio and a huge Tiger Woods fan, too.

Why I enjoy being a Packer: I was fortunate to end up here in Green Bay. The Midwest. A winning tradition. It reminds me a lot of Columbus. I'm comfortable here.
