TE Jake Stoneburner (Official Thread)

Motivated by Draft Slide, Stoneburner Hopes to Stick in Green Bay
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Jake Stoneburner wasn?t harboring any bitterness on Tuesday. He understands why some NFL teams wouldn?t want to take a flyer on a guy coming off a subpar senior season and two knee injuries.

That doesn?t mean he won?t use it as fuel when he steps on the practice field in Green Bay later this month.

?Teams didn?t pick you for a reason and you?ve got to figure out what that is and you?ve got to take that and critique it and take it up with you to Green Bay, show teams they made a mistake in not drafting you,? Stoneburner said while standing inside the weight room at Ohio State?s Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

?You don?t want to act too crazy up there and act like you?re some nut job that wishes he?d have been drafted, but you definitely have to have a chip on your shoulder.?

History shows undrafted TEs have chance to earn roster spot with Packers
May 13, 2013

When the 57 players taking part in the Green Bay Packers? rookie orientation strolled into town last Thursday, coach Mike McCarthy was awaiting them with a message.

Over the course of the team?s four consecutive playoff appearances, many have lauded the Packers? ability to build through the draft with budding stars like Clay Matthews, Randall Cobb and Casey Hayward.

But really, it goes much deeper than that for the Packers? eighth-year coach.

?Frankly, I?ve changed the philosophy of our program. I told them that (Thursday) night,? McCarthy said. ?We?ve been noted as a draft-and-develop football team, but we?re really a draft-and-undrafted football team. That?s what the facts show and something we take a lot of pride in.?

Undrafted tight ends Jake Stoneburner and Brandon Bostick were both listening, playing a position that?s personified McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson?s core belief.

Stoneburner was learning a hard lesson at Ohio State University after a June arrest for public urination and fleeing the police led to Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer placing him on suspension and revoking his scholarship.

To earn it back, the 6-foot-3, 249-pound Stoneburner and one of his teammates spent the summer doing community service and intense private workouts.

Eventually, Stoneburner was welcomed to the team. He switched to a slot receiver in Meyer?s spread offense, finishing the year with 16 passes for 269 yards and four touchdowns as a senior.

As for the arrest, Stoneburner doesn?t know if the incident hurt his draft stock, but it obviously didn?t help, either.

?I was at the combine and I was talking to coaches after and they said everyone has really done it. I just got in trouble for it,? Stoneburner said. ?Obviously, I can?t say it was a good situation. I let the team down. I got in trouble at a bad time. I don?t really think it affected me too much, but obviously it wasn?t something great.?

Could Stoneburner or Bostick become the next Finley, Crabtree, Williams or even special-teamer Ryan Taylor? Maybe, but the possibility is what sold Stoneburner on signing in Green Bay following the draft.

?Just the way their offense is, really. It suits me almost to a T with the way they split out Jermichael,? Stoneburner said. ?He?s almost like ? not a receiver, but a receiving tight end. We?re around the same size, really all the tight ends are around the same size, so I felt like it was a good opportunity to come in. It?s a great atmosphere here to come in, compete and hopefully earn a roster spot.?

Beyond the Game: Packers hopeful Jake Stoneburner
May 19, 2013, by Tim Van Vooren

GREEN BAY (WITI) ? If you have a uniform and a locker, you have a shot! That?s the way many Packers hopefuls are approaching the months between now and the start of the regular season. One of those hopefuls knows he has less room for error than others.

Jake Stoneburner is currently a tight end on the Packers roster. The 6?4″ 250-pound ex-Ohio State Buckeye is an undrafted free agent who has the best he can ask for in trying to get his professional career off the ground.

?Any chance you get thrown in, whether its with the ones, twos, threes ? just make an impression. Be early on everything. Don?t make mistakes,? Stoneburner said.

Stoneburner knows that mistakes can doom anyone. The former high school All-American lost his scholarship at Ohio State for running from police after he was caught urinating on a building in June of 2012. All charges were later dropped, but his stock did too, with Urban Meyer and professional scouts.

?I was like ?oh man, I got myself in trouble,? but I didn?t realize how much it affected everybody, from the team, Coach Meyer, my family, even Ohio State. I put us in a bad limelight,? Stoneburner said.

Now, Stoneburner is trying to work his way up from the bottom in Green Bay.

?A challenge because I went undrafted and the odds are against me to make this team, but it?s also a little bit of pressure because this is what I?ve dreamed of doing for so long,? Stoneburner said.

While some of his new teammates are stepping up from Division III college football, Stoneburner won?t be intimidated at all by the big NFL stadiums like Lambeau Field. If you play at Ohio State, you?ve played on a big stage.

?I played probably four or five games over 100,000 people, sold out. You know, it adds pressure. I?m used to the pressure situations. Those guys are here for a reason as well, but I feel like with the people watching and the pressure, I definitely have an advantage with that, and the type of football we played certainly helps too,? Stoneburner said.

Stoneburner once had it all laid out for him in football. Now, he hopes to put the pieces back together again, and pave a new path to the NFL.

The Green Bay Packers are currently going through voluntary workouts before next month?s mandatory minicamp. Stoneburner says he looks forward to the heavy workload.

Stoneburner: The new Cris Carter?

Jake Stoneburner scored the Packers' first touchdown of the preseason.

GREEN BAY ? If you thought Cris Carter was the only wide receiver from Ohio State whose reputation was that He only catches touchdowns, well, Jake Stoneburner would like a word.

During his junior and senior seasons with the Buckeyes, the Green Bay Packers undrafted rookie free agent caught only 30 passes (14 in 2011 and 16 in 2012). Of those, an astonishing 11 were for touchdowns ? 36.7 percent. Last season alone, seven of his 16 catches were for TDs.

?That?s kind of been my thing at Ohio State,? Stoneburner said after catching a 9-yard touchdown ? what else? ? from B.J. Coleman in the Packers? 19-7 preseason victory over the St. Louis Rams Saturday night. ?I didn?t catch many balls, but when I did, I scored.?

He did it again against the Rams. After not registering a catch in the preseason opener against Arizona, Stoneburner caught two passes ? one for no gain, and then the touchdown ? against the Rams. Oddly enough, a mistake by the official scoring crew at the Edward Jones Dome credited rookie outside linebacker Andy Mulumba ? who wears No. 46 while Stoneburner is No. 45 ? with the TD instead of Stoneburner.

No matter, since everyone knew that Mr. Touchdown had caught the ball. It was a terrific throw by Coleman, who has been up and down in camp, and a great catch by Stoneburner, who shielded his defender from the ball and caught it just inside the goal line and sideline.

?It was just a simple corner route and B.J. was scrambling, and he made a heck of a pass ? I mean, an incredible pass ? and I was just coming back to the ball and was able to keep my feet in and get the ball and touch the pylon,? Stoneburner said. ?I give credit to B.J., because that was one heck of a pass, I thought. I was just able to catch it.?

For Stoneburner, it was a key play as he tries to make a name for himself in a crowded tight end group as he reacclimates himself to the position after moving to wide receiver last year when Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus.

?For me not playing tight end last year, I feel like I?ve made a lot of progress with blocking and just learning the position again,? Stoneburner said. ?We?ve got a really great, deep position, so it?s just a numbers game and I?m just trying to do anything I can to make an impression. (This game) definitely helped, but I still have a long way to go. It?s not up to me, I just have to keep on grinding, and that?s what I?m trying to do.?

Stoneburner, who only played 13 offensive snaps, also sealed the victory by recovering the Rams? onside kick with 58 seconds to play. That won?t hurt his cause, either, given the uncertainty at his position behind starter Jermichael Finley.

Would-be No. 2 Andrew Quarless, who missed all of last season following reconstructive knee surgery, has been out with a quadriceps pull. Blocking tight end Matthew Mulligan left Saturday night?s game with an arm injury of unknown severity. Third-year man Ryan Taylor hasn?t played in the preseason since suffering a knee injury in the Family Night Scrimmage. And while former practice squadder Brandon Bostick has taken a step forward, third-year player D.J. Williams has been up and down.

That could add up to opportunity for the new kid.

?I felt like I was able to make plays when they came my way. I didn?t do anything out of my ability,? Stoneburner said. ?I just felt like with that onside kick and the pass, I felt like when they come your way you have to seize your opportunity, and I felt like I was able to do that tonight. The onside kick I guess, I was so excited about the touchdown, I didn?t really think that was a big play, but I guess it kind of was.?

A look at who hurt themselves
August, 25, 2013
By Rob Demovsky

Jake Stoneburner: After seemingly putting himself on the right side of the roster bubble with a touchdown catch the previous week at St. Louis, the rookie tight end fumbled on the way to what could have been a 16-yard touchdown. Stoneburner coughed up the ball at the Seahawks’ 3-yard line after safety Winston Guy hit him with a glancing blow.
