TE Jake Stoneburner (Official Thread)

All of a sudden we have very good TE's! (that and the WR position needs Stoney!) But the bottom line is we have options now! I can picture Stoney crushing some poor DB on a run play!

Or Stoney running a route across the middle (in what should be no man's land), and a MLB comes up and tries to go for the big hit, and ends up trucked.

Stoney will be the ultimate blocking machine, hardened by 2 years of blocking linemen and linebackers. A legend in the making.

On any given play, Stoney could motion in and provide a double tight end formation. If the opponent had their nickle package on the field, look out.

Unleashing Stoneburner
Coaches will utilize hybrid tight end all over to cause matchup problems

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There was surely no need to twist Jake Stoneburner's arm.

The change in position would allow him to line up all over the field, put him in more winnable matchups and surely boost his production -- not exactly a package anybody would want to turn down.

But just in case the senior didn't believe coach Urban Meyer or offensive coordinator Tom Herman could really deliver all that by turning a tight end into a hybrid wide receiver, the evidence was right there on film at previous stops for both of them. And Stoneburner is now next in line to reap the benefits as the Buckeyes shuffle him around the field and turn him into one of their most versatile offensive weapons.

"He'll do a lot of things for us," Herman said. "He still gets a little work at tight end here and there if we're in different formations and personnel packages that we have. But we still kind of see him as that multipurpose guy that we always have.

Stoneburner breaks through
Senior tight end begins to put offseason behind him with TD catch

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The suspension never came with a loss of playing time. Jake Stoneburner's touchdown drought really didn't last that long either.

But after a trying couple months for the Ohio State senior following his June arrest for public urination and a modest personal scoreless streak of three games dating to last year, there was no hiding the relief for Stoneburner after breaking through in a 31-16 win over Central Florida on Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

Jake Stoneburner celebrates with Corey "Philly" Brown on Saturday after Stoneburner caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter against UCF.

"Oh man, it's been a while," Stoneburner said. "Tough summer, and to finally get out there and score, it's a great feeling. It was great being in the end zone again.

"I learned how your actions, no matter how big or how little, affect the entire team. Basically it's a team thing, and I made a mistake and everyone had to pay for it."

Meyer Never Lost Faith in Stoneburner
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Jake Stoneburner had the world at his finger tips and almost pissed it away.

Literally.

Ohio State?s fifth-year tight end thought he was just out for a night on the town with his boys following the Memorial Tournament in Stoneburner?s hometown of Dublin, Ohio. A night of fun quickly turned into a night Stoneburner and teammate Jack Mewhort would never forget.

What started as a bathroom break eventually landed the two Buckeyes behind bars after they decided to run from police who confronted them for urinating on the side of a building.

It was a gut-check moment for Stoneburner, who lost his scholarship for the summer semester, not to mention his pride, over an incident that could have been avoided with better judgment.

?Your actions, no matter how big or how little, affect the entire team,? Stoneburner said when asked what he learned from the incident.

?It's a team thing and I made a mistake and everyone had to pay for it.?

Stoneburner getting back into groove

It?s fair to say Jacob Stoneburner was excited to get back in the end zone Saturday during Ohio State?s 31-16 victory against UCF.

Just how excited was he?

?It?s a great feeling being up here and talking to you guys again,? he told the media afterward.

Now THAT?S excited.

All kidding aside, Stoneburner?s comment underscored one truth ? if it weren?t for his offseason citation for disorderly conduct, he likely would have been talking to the media a lot more during fall camp and the early days of the Ohio State season.

The fifth-year senior from Dublin (Ohio) Coffman was on the short list of those players thought to be in the running for the team?s captaincy during spring football, and his easy way with media, fans and teammates made him a natural spokesman for the team.

Of course, that went out the window in early June when Stoneburner and teammate Jack Mewhort were cited for fleeing from police after being spotted urinating on the side of a building in Shawnee Hills, Ohio, near The Bogey Bar & Grill, a popular hangout spot during that weekend?s Memorial Tournament.

Suddenly, Stoneburner went from potential team leader to firmly entrenched in head coach Urban Meyer?s doghouse along with Mewhort. The two had to pay their way during summer classes and were barred from team workouts during the offseason.

The punishment was severe for multiple reasons. Meyer expects more out of his seniors, and the situation came at an unfortunate time as the Buckeyes were in dire need of a distraction-free offseason while players worked toward honing their skills in Meyer?s new offense.

?I was very upset with him,? Meyer said, ?but to say I lost my trust in him or I wouldn't say that. Extremely upset, like you would with one of your kids. But to say I don't trust Jake Stoneburner, that's not appropriate. Anger and those type of things, yes, but not lack of trust.?

That?s one reason that after Stoneburner served his penance, he and Mewhort were returned to the squad in time for the beginning of fall camp.

"It was business as usual once practice started," Stoneburner said. "We were back at football and saying let?s just worry about football.?

Best of both worlds
Stoneburner brings WR catching and TE blocking to aid Buckeyes offense
Updated: September 28, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The wide receiver in Jake Stoneburner wants the ball.

The tight end in the senior realizes how valuable he can be as a blocker.

When Jake Stoneburner does catch the ball, he often finds the end zone, as three of his seven receptions have gone for TDs.

As Ohio State continues to take advantage of his versatility and potential to create physical mismatches, moving him all over the field, there are going to be games that feature one of the calling cards of those two positions more than the other. But when there are reception-less outings such as the one Stoneburner had last week against UAB, it certainly doesn't hurt to have something else to fall back on.

"I knew I blocked well, but I really didn't realize how well I blocked until the next day in film," Stoneburner said. "You know, you're always going to wish you caught the ball at least once, and I wasn't bummed out, but I wished I was able to make a play after the game.

"But that's kind of why they've got me out there. To make plays, but also to be able to seal the edge and have a big height and weight advantage over guys who are a lot smaller than me."
