TE Jake Stoneburner (Official Thread)

Stating the obvious, but the best thing about a great tight end is the defense is going to have to cover him with somebody other than a linebacker. That will open up the game for the wideouts. Or they can let him catch 3 touchdowns in every game.

Akron tried, unsuccessfully, to cover him with DBs.

He is a match-up nightmare, no doubt about that. But, his biggest advantage for the entire season was probably last week against Akron. Once we get into the Big 10, I think the defenses will be able to match up better with Stoneburner than the last placed MAC school did. Linebackers will be bigger and faster and hang with him much better than Akron's DB's and LB's could ever dream of doing. Not that it's all downhill from here for Stoney, but I think the mismatches won't be quite as evident.

How many TEs have declared early and got picked in the early- to mid-first round? No matter what kind of season he has this year, he'll improve his stock by sticking around another year and showing it was no fluke. Even if his staying improves his draft position by only 5-10 spots, the money he'll gain will be well worth it.

Going back to Tony Gonzalez in the '97 draft, at least 9 (of 18 total) first-round TEs were early-entrants to the draft: Jermaine Gresham, Vernon Davis, Heath Miller, Kellen Winslow II, Dallas Clark, Jeremy Shockey, Jerramy Stevens, Bubba Franks, Tony Gonzalez.

That doesn't include early-entry 2nd-rounders like Kyle Rudolph, Rob Gronkowski, Richard Quinn and Zach Miller in the last few drafts. Of course there's the chance to improve (or devalue) his stock with another year at OSU, but early-entry TEs have done pretty well for themselves too.

Also take into account that he is a redshirt junior, and may therefore be graduating this year. I think if he does have a 50 catch 10 td season, coming back to school for the love of all that is Ohio State is a stronger force than improving his draft stock.

What has happened to Stoneburner? He seems to have disappeared a bit this season now. Of course, our passing game has struggled, but is he hurt? Nicked up? Fragel seems more involved that Stoneburner.

I think it's more that defensive coordinators know about him.

I'm not sure if that's a reason to take (arguably) our best offensive weapon out of the game. If D-coords are aware of him, so are the defensive players. If he draws that much attention, its only going to open up more chances for our young WR's.

Stoney coming out of the game at any time not including injury or fatigue is downright foolish.
