TE Jake Ballard (Super Bowl Champion)

I rewatched the game today and just wanted to say that Jake Ballard had an exceptional day blocking. I could be wrong, but it seemed like the coaching staff used Jake a bit differently in the blocking schemes against Illinois and it was VERY effective. No doubt he will grade out a winning performance and would not be surprised to see him get the OL lineman of the week award.

I'm not big on watching the O-line play. But Jake really stood out to me a few times yesterday with some great blocks on the edge. Now if we can just get him the ball a few more times...:)

Agreed, it is extremely hard to cover a TE who is an exceptional blocker in college. I'd love to see more play-action naked boots.

Rainy Conditions Dictate Mega-Adjustments by OSU Coaching Staff

I read this article over on the Ozone after making my post, and, yes, it does appear that they put in a few new wrinkles on the blocking scheme using Jake as the primary lead blocker from the TE position.

Good observation. Ballard was indeed named the Jim Parker OL of the Week for the Illinois game.

OSU notebook: Catches dwindling, tight end enjoys role as run blocker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Jake Ballard would rather catch passes than throw blocks, but that's usually not the fate of an Ohio State tight end. It certainly wasn't Saturday, when heavy rain caused the Buckeyes to turn to their running game in a 30-0 win over Illinois.

But Ballard wasn't complaining yesterday as the Buckeyes switched their attention to a game Saturday at Indiana. He rejoiced in his role of an H back leading the way for running backs Daniel Herron and Brandon Saine and quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Ballard was good at it, too, being named the team's Jim Parker offensive lineman of the week.

"Last week was a fun game in general. I haven't played in a sloppy game like that probably since high school," Ballard said. "It was a monsoon out there, and we weren't going to throw the ball."

The Buckeyes added a few wrinkles in the running game, which featured Ballard.

"Our game plan was to run the ball, and whenever I was pulling it was fun," Ballard said. "It was fun leading up through the hole, seeing the backs make cuts off my blocks, and seeing them get a lot of yards. It was a very exciting game."

Ohio State turned in its second straight game with at least 200 rushing yards. But Indiana gave up just 149 yards rushing at Michigan in a 36-33 loss last week.

"Indiana is 3-1; they took Michigan down to the wire," Ballard said. "We're expecting them to play us tough."

After re-watching the game, this is well deserved. The whole line did great but I loved how we used Ballard pulling and it was an excellent adjustment. Some of our line seemed to be having trouble pulling and kept jumping offsides in anticipation. I believe we only had one offsides penalty and Ballard got to where he needed to be in a hurry.

QUARANTINED:@ TE Jake Ballard had the flu over the weekend and had to stay away from the rest of the team. He didn't enjoy it.

"I came down sick this past weekend and I was kept away from the team for two days," he said. "I think that was a smart thing to do. It was boring, by myself at my house, when I knew everyone was ... working, but it was the right thing to do and I didn't want anybody else to get sick."
