TE Jake Ballard (Super Bowl Champion)

Ballard is too tough to stay down

NEW ORLEANS ? Jake Ballard came off last week?s loss to the Eagles needing X-rays of his elbow, and while he waited for the results, it was impossible not to notice he had a very swollen knee. Yet Ballard did not appear on the injury report last week and did not miss any practice time. The second-year tight end is set to face the Saints tonight.

?He?s a tough kid and has been practicing, hasn?t missed anything,?? said offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. ?I?m sure it?s sore. A lot of guys are beat up, but they just keep going. And knowing the way he is, I?ll be shocked if he allowed this to affect his play.??

Ballard is essentially a rookie, having spent all but one week last year on the practice squad and he?s been a revelation with 27 receptions for 443 yards and three touchdowns.

Last week was his worst week, though, as he had two rare dropped passes and little went his way. Eli Manning threw in his direction seven times, yet all Ballard had to show for his efforts was one catch for 13 yards.

The Giants need more from him, as they figure to have to score plenty of points to keep up with the Saints.

?It wasn?t good,?? Gilbride said of Ballard?s performance in the 17-10 loss to the Eagles. ?It wasn?t like him. He?s made some spectacular catches. I hope we got that all out of our system, every which way, both drops and protection and run game, and this week we?ll be back the way that we?ve been.??

Giants' Tom Coughlin believes Jake Ballard's catch against Packers was a touchdown
Published: Monday, December 05, 2011
By Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger

A day later, Tom Coughlin was nauseous.

Not about his team’s effort in the Giants’ loss to the Packers. Rather, about a replay challenge he believes he should’ve won when tight end Jake Ballard was ruled out of bounds on a pass in the end zone. The officials upheld the call on the field and the Giants settled for a field goal. It was 10-7 instead of 14-7.

“I just saw a picture that made me sick to my stomach, which Fox produced and showed he’s in,” Coughlin said today. “Don’t ask me about that because I really don’t know why, but I did see the picture.”

Ballard: 'It looks like I was in'

Everyone seems to have an opinion on whether Jake Ballard landed in the end zone or out of bounds after a first-quarter catch against the Packers on Sunday.

For what it's worth, Ballard believes he was in.

"I thought so," he said on Wednesday.

On the play in question, Eli Manning found a diving Ballard in the end zone for what the Giants hoped was a 20-yard touchdown. But referees ruled Ballard out of bounds. He got one foot in. At issue was whether he dragged his knee in, too.

Tom Coughlin challenged the play, but referee Jeff Triplette reviewed it upheld the call on the field. New York settled for Lawrence Tynes' field goal, which broke a 7-7 tie.

Coughlin later saw a photo produced by FOX TV that appeared to show Ballard?s right knee touching down inside the end zone.

?I just saw a picture which made me sick to my stomach, which FOX produced and showed that he?s in,? the coach said during his Monday press conference.

Ballard has seen the photo that shows his knee landing in the end zone.

"It looks like I was in," he said with a smile.

But he didn't need the photo to prove that he'd scored.

Ballard saw a video replay that showed his knee pad landing inside the end zone before his momentum carried him out of bounds.

"My knee pad was in," the tight end said.

I would not have guessed Ballard would be this productive in the NFL.

It's funny, sometimes, how guys you think are destined for NFL success never find it while others succeed when you didn't truly expect it.

Good for Jake. :osu:

Agreed, I give the Giants props for giving him so many targets. Ballard isn't an elite athlete playing TE, but he's a big body that blocks well and has good hands. Awesome watching him succeed.
