Yup, moved from Gahanna to Pickerington in the Summer.

Oh, that's definitely not good for you. Neither city gives full credit for taxes withheld where you work. So, for example, if you work in Columbus, in addition to the 2.5% withheld from your check, you owe Gahanna an additional .25% tax for that portion of the year and Pickerington an additional .50% tax for the rest of the year, assuming you actually live in the cities' taxing area, and not just in their mailing address area. You could actually be in Columbus instead of Gahanna....or Reynoldsburg instead of Pickerington. Oh, and Pickerington has a school district income tax of another 1.00%.

I recommend you pay someone to do it......or pretend like you never read this post. Then file the federal and state through TurboTax while hoping the cities don't come looking for you. :paranoid:

Out of curiosity, In what city(cities) have you and Mrs. Mac been working?

Me, Hilliard (I hate that drive) and Mrs. Mac, Columbus

I used TaxSlayer (no joke) for several years up until last year and it did the job. I know at first they charged a lower fee than most of the leading services, but as they've grown I'm not sure if that's still the case. Last year was the first time doing taxes with the wife, and she wanted to use TurboTax instead.

TurboTax was nice though because we were able to do trial runs before filing.

We have to file separately (at least for the next seven years) because otherwise her income will cause my monthly student loan payment to nearly triple and and decrease the amount of student loan debt I can have forgiven. She seemed to think somehow that the benefits of filing jointly were somehow going to outweigh that. She was convinced otherwise after seeing the trial runs side-by-side and seeing what "our" new student loan bill would look like.

If I were you, I would not file for the city that you live in and I would use TurboTax. If I weren't so lazy, I would probably do my taxes myself. Really, it isn't that difficult and by reading your posts I don't see anything complicated at all. However, TurboTax will sometimes find deductions that you don't think about.

The problem with going to someone to do your taxes is that they are "obligated" to file city income tax statements and once that happens you will have to do it each year. Some day the city that you live in might catch up to you but I would wait until that day. Most of the suburbs around Columbus have hired agency to collect city taxes but I just would not worry about it. We pay enough in taxes so fuck it.

I changed my mind. If you moved from one taxing city to another and you haven't dealt with a city return previously, you don't want to do your own.

Pay somebody to do it, even if just for this year. Part-year cities are a pain in the ass.

Just one more thing I like about Oregon. Don't have those city taxes on top of county, state, fed, municpal, river, street, pasture, hill, crevice taxes.

This is where Florida is great. Only have to file fed taxes. No city, state, or other bs taxes to worry about.

Still only about $15 if you have to file a state return, $10 if not. they have a premium service for $30 (I think) that gives you access to a live person if you have questions and such. I believe both TurboTax and TaxSlayer are pretty much one in the same for 99% of people filing taxes.

Don't remember... does FL have Sales Tax? Oregon doesn't have one, but we've got a whooper of a State Income Tax.

Yep, plus they tax meat and other common items, which is why some things have a bit of sticker shock if you move there from somewhere else without taxes on individual items. I still somewhat balk at the comparative price of meat in the supermarkets when I'm down there.*

*Not to say that the stuff is stupidly expensive or the prices are crazy inflated because of it, I just tend to pick up on things like that immediately.

EDIT2: Upon further reading it looks like the original source I used for the post was a little old. It looks like that's been revised and the tax is limited to things such as soft drinks, candy, and other things similar. I thought the source I originally read (admittedly a while ago) was fairly recent, but it must not have been. Now I'm curious...

It's that time again. Have a quick question. We didn't move this year, and the wife and I have our W2's, but I coached HS lacrosse last year. I filled out a W9 before the season started, and the sent me a 1099 in January. Taxes were not taken out from coaching. When using h&r or turbotax do I just add that amount I got paid as addt'l income, or add it onto our w-2's?

In which case it should also go on your city return. RITA is always watching. She will find you and run over your dog.

RITA isn't as bad when you move out of Powell (would have been nice to know the city charges several bps when you don't work in the city)...

FWIW, Mechanicsburg, Bexley, and Sunbury are all worse.
