I am having problems getting the Fed to accept my return and the message from Turbotax is cryptic at best and I can get it fixed. I have tried three times so far. It says the Taxpayer TIN in the header cannot be the same as a previously submitted return. Every time I go back in to try to fix it, it takes me to the PIN you use when you submit. I have verified and fixed these, but it still reflects it. Any thoughts?

Many other issues with Turbotax this time as well. Not doing it next year.

Oh, that's no good. That's the e-file reject you get when someone has already filed a return using your name & SSN in order to claim a fraudulent refund.

Hope you like hold music, because you're going to get a fair dose of it over the next week.

Here's the guide to what to do next.

But......although a huge pain in the ass, it's not a big deal. You'll talk to the IRS, send them an identity theft affidavit, have to file by paper this year, and then get a PIN to use when e-filing in future years. Not much else to it other than taking the usual credit protection step.

Follow my advice: claim that the IRS and personal income tax is unConstitutional, don't pay taxes, and live in the woods, moving frequently, except when you come into town to look for abandoned food in dumpsters.

Just to echo what Fungo said-not a big deal, a lot of Turbo tax users punching in wrong numbers and mistakenly using another's SSN. it has happened at least 5 times at my business, and filing with paper is the way to proceed.

I don't think that's it -- the IRS crosschecks SSNs and first 3 letters of last names on the SS database, so an incorrect SSN would almost always reject as a mismatch. My money is on a fraudulent return being filed already. @buckeyebri -- the best way to confirm that is to contact IRS's fraud hotline and confirm with them. From everything I have heard, the agents there are extremely helpful and friendly. You may want to have your wife with you when you call in case it is her SSN that was rejected -- they won't talk to you if it is only her SSN that has been compromised.

We saw probably a dozen of these last year and another half-dozen or so this year.

Thanks guys,
When I initially did my return, it included my daughter. I learned through the criteria that I could not claim her, but I didn't remove her info. Could that be causing the issue by any chance?

I am on the road for work, so I cant deal with it until Friday. That always makes for a fun week.

I wouldn't think so -- assuming she has already filed and claimed herself, the reject on that should say "Each Dependent's SSN on this return cannot be used on another return as a Primary or Secondary SSN".....or something along those lines.

We've seen just a couple of those, too -- usually with some over-zealous teenagers trying to file their own taxes and claiming himself because he does know what the f he is doing. No gender neutrality on that one -- almost always a son.

Ok, I was hoping that might be it. This was a rough tax year in terms of completing them. Two states, rental property, buying and selling a house. Then on top all of the hidden fees that Turbotax is coming up with. Yeah I am going to pay you to get my refund, not. Now this. Going back to utilizing a professional next year.

Paid a huge tax bill today. It hurt. Too late to register as a Republican?

Today?!? Madness! You're giving the government an interest-free loan for 7 days!

I'll run my check through meter next Monday night and drop it in a blue box on Thursday or Friday. Sticking it to the man!
