That is a statement absolutely lacking in nuance, which is a key to reconciling matters of faith with the complexities of modern life.

I see we have a post-modernist in the house :)

Pardon me for subjecting you to another of those loathsome ad hominem attacks (glad you're getting good use out of your Fallacy 101 textbook), but that sure sounds like the pot calling the kettle black.

 It's OK, I forgive you

I didn't mention the word "proof" in my post (unless you're referring to the QED part).
That's what QED means, Einstein, so yeah, that's what I meant. :tongue2:

As for the whole ad hominem, debating partner stuff - I have never claimed to be a logician or debater. Now, there are indeed some Master Debaters on here. Plenty of evidence can be found in the Romper Room.

The reason I'm putting up these videos of televangelists and scammers is that I want to steer the conversation and get some advice here.

I have a very good friend whose parent give lots of money to these ministries. (He doesn't know how much, but says it's a lot.) They're sort-of educated folks, but they're well-off professionals... except that they have gone into debt. The worse their finances get, the more they feel they have to give to "God" so that he will "bless" them.

Every time my friend has tried to broach the topic with them, the parents go ballistic, get very defensive, start dreading that he will burn in hell for "speaking ill a man of God," they call their son an "atheist" etc...

I personally saw his mother tell him that if he talks badly about a "man of God" ("Pastor" Ken Copeland in one of the videos above), he should not expect God to let him wake up in the morning.

Nothing seems to get through to them. My friend tried in vain to convince them to give to charities (secular or religious), to volunteer their time and money and see how the resources are spent instead of mailing checks to some "ministry" but it's all in vain. Not only can this money be better spent if they gave it to real charities, but they can also save some of it towards their old age or to get out of debt.

I am pretty much discredited in their eyes, as a former Roman Catholic turned skeptic (the double-whammy of Satan, as they see it).

Anyone have advice or personal stories to share here? It's so easy for skeptics (I mean people of faith and without faith being skeptical about the "healing" and "prosperity" promised by these scammers) to scoff at the people who send them money, but what can I tell my friend?

Thanks folks :)

It's tough talking to family members about their religious choices. Just look at how things go here! :tongue2: When your church is telling you what to believe it's hard to fight that. Even logic won't always overcome belief.
Pick your spots and battles.

I would tell your friend to say his piece, and then let it go. Badgering his parents about it (no matter how correct he is) isn't worth it. It will damage his relationship beyond repair. His parents need to learn this for themselves.

I fell prey to a church that was very aggressive with their tithing antics. It took my eyes being opened through my own experience to see just how I was being wronged.
