Super Bowl XL - Steelers vs. Seahawks

The one thing about the Seahawks win that to me, puts an asterisk against the victory, is that the game changed when Carolina lost the last of their legitimate running threats with Goings injury.

As for the forthcoming game - and the line projected win for the Steelers.

The Steelers D is riding herd on Quarterbacks right now, and Hasselbeck will have to have one of the best games of his life, and his O-line a mistake free day to avoid rushes, sacks and the likely resulting interceptions.

Seattle's best chances I am certain will come if they can establish the running game with Alexander against a pretty good & stingy Steeler run-D.

This isn't a walkover by any means, as the early line tells you, but I think it is fair that the Steelers get the nod as likely winners.

How about Lofa Tatupu?

sandgk: "The one thing about the Seahawks win that to me, puts an asterisk against the victory, is that the game changed when Carolina lost the last of their legitimate running threats with Goings injury."

Why would Goings injury "put an asterisk" on the victory? Goings didn't cause the injury himself, Tatupu (another USC guy :smash: :groove: ) knocked the shit out of him! Goings was out for the game and Tatupu continued to play. Certainly Polamalu has had a great year but Tatupu's year has been at least as good. Just wait "Big Ben" will get acquainted with Lofa after he picks off a pass or two.

The Steelers are "hot" no doubt. But the Seahawks have won 13 of their past 14 games, and that one loss was the last game of the year against Green Bay which meant nothing to Seattle and Holmgren rested all of the key starters for the entire second half.

Steelers on cusp of finishing storybook season

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers sense that something special is going on here, the kind of season remembered and replayed not only for a few years but for generations.
A season in which a team has to try harder and travel a far more difficult road to win football’s biggest game.
After a month virtually unrivaled in NFL playoff history, the Steelers are one victory away from a Super Bowl championship that, by degree of difficulty, might eclipse any of the four they won during the 1970s.
The improbable three-game road sweep in the AFC playoffs. A game and a season saved by an improbable tackle — by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, of all people. Eliminating Super Bowl favorite Indianapolis a few weeks after the Colts seemed poised to go undefeated.
Jerome Bettis closing out a Hall of Fame career by going home to Detroit for the Super Bowl — and overcoming the fumble of a lifetime. Bill Cowher, the NFL’s most tenured coach with one team, finally getting another chance for a championship ring in his 14 th season. Roethlisberger resembling John Elway and Joe Montana in the playoffs in only his second season.
"Somebody should write a book about this," receiver Hines Ward said, "because it’s better than fiction."
The Steelers haven’t won the last game of the NFL season since Jimmy Carter was president and Terry Bradshaw was their quarterback during the 1979 season.
"You work hard to travel this path, but if you’re not able to finish the deal you’ll be forgotten," Cowher said. "You have a chance to put your name up there with some of the great teams. That’s the opportunity that you’re selling to your players."
It’s also why Cowher is trying to keep this off week close to a regular week, even if he knows that is impossible. Cowher is attempting to keep the edge, ambition and motivation the Steelers fed off while beating the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis and Denver Broncos during the first sweep of a conference’s Nos. 1, 2 and 3 seeds.
The Steelers were off yesterday — they haven’t practiced since their 34-17 rout of Denver in the AFC championship game Sunday — but will work out today, Friday and Saturday. After another day off Sunday, they’ll travel to Detroit on Monday.
Cowher’s decision to wear white jerseys in the Super Bowl, rather than the traditional black the Steelers wear at home, also reflects his desire to keep things as they have been during a seven-game winning streak.
"We’re playing in the Super Bowl, so how can we have a letdown?" nose tackle Casey Hampton said. "I can’t see how that can happen."
Cowher can, and he has cautioned his players all week — either in person or through the media — about the dangers of relaxing for even a moment. Like the Steelers, who feel they were unjustifiably overlooked heading into the playoffs despite going 26-6 the past two seasons, the Seattle Seahawks believe they have something to prove, Cowher said.
Because they’re located three times zones removed from the populous East Coast media centers, the Seahawks are convinced that their 13-3 record didn’t attract the admiration it warranted. "This is a supreme team with the same aspirations we have," Cowher said. "They’re playing with a high level of confidence. It’s not going to get done by showing up, and we really have not accomplished anything. That’s the thing we have to keep in mind, because some people will give you kudos and will talk about all the good things we’ve done, but that can all change with one play, with one quarter or one bad game."

Once Goings was injured, Carolina went 4 wides and threw the ball. They were one dimensional. Seattle put everybody on Smith and that was it for the Carolina offense. I am sorry but Tatupu hasn't had as good of year as Polamalu. Heck you even had some Browns homers on here say that Polamalu is the best safety they have ever seen.

Seattle should definitely be worried about the defense they are going up against. Seattle didn't face a top 10 defrense until last week and Alexander's YPC dropped from 5.1 to 3.8. Carolina didn't have their two best lineman in the game. Dallas was the only 3-4 team Seattle has faced and Alexander's YPC was 2.9. The Steelers play a 3-4 and are the number 1 ranked defense.

Yeah, Seattle's defense might be pretty good, against the run; but they are ranked what, #25 against the pass? From what the experts are saying, they send a lot of blitzes and different looks, making it tough on the QB. Hmm......that's exactly the same thing they said before Pittsburgh played Indy and Denver. The Steelers' OLine didn't have a lot of trouble in either of those 2 games. Let's not forget that the Steelers have 2 Pro bowlers on that line in Hartings and Faneca.

I really couldn't care less who wins the game, but some of the postings of Seahawks fans have been pretty ridiculous. To me, they mostly can be summed up as, "We deserve to be in the game. We really do. And we'll play the Steelers tough. Please believe us." :shake:

I don't really buy into the transitive property for football but a great indicator of NFC vs AFC strength this year was in the Chicago vs Pittsburgh game in early December(iirc).

Chicago, the NFC #2 seed, had won 6 some odd games straight vs NFC teams and looked dominant doing it. They went into Pittsburgh and got absolutely physically bitch slapped including the defensive MVP(yeah right)getting fucking trucked for a Bettis TD.

Late season, both teams playing for something important, the AFC #6 seed killed the NFC #2. IMO it showed a significant difference in the depth of good teams from one conference to another.

The Seahwaks are a good team but I think outside of Jacksonville any of the other 5 AFC teams were capable of winning the SB. Seattle is the only team from the NFC you could honestly say that about.

So to me, much like back in the 80's and early 90's, the weaker conference is going to send a pretty good team to do what it can against a superior opponent.

As long as Cowher doesn't get conservative and lets Big Ben throw early to keep the Seahawk D honest I think this game is Pittsburgh's to win. If his Marty ball tendency's take over in a big game situation and he tries to run into a 9 man front all day then its upset alert time.

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but it's too good NOT to share...

Living about 1/2 hour from the Ohio/PA border, I've noticed a lot of excitement about the upcoming Super Bowl (and rightly so). Growing up, a lot of my family members were Cleveland fans and tried in indoctrinate me into "Brown-dom". It didn't work, and I'm not a fan of either the Browns or the Steelers. So, I don't get too bent out of shape about that rivalry. But, this week (following the Steelers win), there has been something that's driven me to the edge. THERE ARE STEELER FANS COMING OUT OF THE FREAKING WOODWORK!!! I realize that there's always some bandwagoning for something like this, but all these people I see claim to be die-hard, life-long fans (either by word or action). So, I developed a little test... :sneaky:

I ask a self-proclaimed Steeler die-hard to do one simple thing: name 10 players from the team. That's it. Just 10. I don't even limit it to starters. Any 10 from the roster. And the results thus far...

Out of a dozen or so "fans", I've had a total of THREE be able to do it. And, a lot of the ones that couldn't weren't even pronouncing the names they knew correctly (i.e. "Folumalo").

So, even though I have nothing against the Steelers (matter of fact, I really like Big Ben), I hope they lose. I just can't take another several weeks of this (at least not without some help from prescription meds :)).

I thought it was time as we lead up to the game to remind everyone just how beloved Ben is in the Steel City

Pittsburgh Would So Do Ben Roethlisberger Right Now
Pittsburgh City Council voted unanimously on Monday that the city would totally do rookie Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger if he wants them to. The vote was rushed through after a petition with more than 500,000 signatures demanding action was delivered to the Council on Sunday.
“This city is Big Ben-crazy right now and the people wanted some way to express their gratitude to him for turning the team around,” said Mayor Tom Murphy. “So, Ben, if you’re listening, we’re all more than happy to. Just say the word. We love you.”
<table align="center" border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="2"> <tbody><tr> <td><!-- FASTCLICK.COM 300x250 MEDIUM RECTANGLE CODE for sportspickle.com --> <script language="javascript" src="http://media.fastclick.net/w/get.media?sid=7092&m=6&tp=8&d=j&t=n"></script> <noscript> http://media.fastclick.net/w/get.media?sid=7092&m=6&tp=8&d=s&c=1 </noscript> <!-- FASTCLICK.COM 300x250 MEDIUM RECTANGLE CODE for sportspickle.com --></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Roethlisberger is undefeated since taking over as the team’s starting quarterback in week three, most recently leading the Steelers to victory over the Patriots and Eagles.
Just more than half of the signatures on the petition were from men, an interesting fact for a blue collar city with a minimal gay population.
“Oh, yeah – definitely. I signed the petition,” said Gary Disardo, a retired steelworker form the city’s South Side. “I’m not gay or anything, but I would have sex with Ben Roethlisberger if he let me. And I wouldn’t even have to be drunk.”
“This is not about gay or straight,” said Murphy. “It’s about Steelers football, and there’s nothing gay about that. It’s not even so much about the sex. This is just a way for us to show how much he means to us. If he doesn’t want us for sex, that’s okay. We’ll happily mow his lawn, pick up his mail for him, or start his car on cold mornings. Whatever he needs, the people of Pittsburgh are willing to give him so he remains happy and stays here forever.”
Roethlisberger said he was very humbled by measure.
“This city has been great to me from the first day I arrived here,” said Roethlisberger. “I need to keep my focus on the field right now, so I don’t think I’ll be taking them up on the offer, but maybe I’ll let some people do my grocery shopping for me or wash my car. Also, if any of the women who signed the petition want to send me their picture, that would be fine. I don’t really have time for dating right now and that would help weed out some of the uglier ones.”

Finally some smack talk and bad blood.

Jerremy Stevens (nobody TE from Seattle) opened things up and Joey Porter (suprisingly enough) took it from there.

All in all an amusing side bar to the mind numbing hype.

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) -- Steelers linebacker Joey Porter minded his manners and said nothing derogatory about the Seahawks during his first two days at the Super Bowl. That changed Wednesday after Seattle tight end Jerramy Stevens effectively guaranteed a victory.
Porter said Stevens' remarks were all he needed to get him going for the Super Bowl.

"I've got my first taste of blood and now I'm thirsty for more. Until now, it was 'Watch what I say,' `I can't say this,' `I can't say that,' `Don't do anything silly,' but I'm ready now.
"You look for the guys that say something that aren't supposed to say nothing, and I feel like he definitely was out of pocket to say what he said," Porter said. "I'm going to make sure he owns up to those words."
Porter was agitated about Stevens' comments Tuesday regarding Steelers star Jerome Bettis' much-publicized return to his hometown of Detroit to try to win a Super Bowl in what likely is his final season.
"It's a heartwarming story and all that, but it will be a sad day when he leaves without that trophy," said Stevens, who said later he wasn't guaranteeing a victory but was only saying what he felt.
Stevens also said Porter will have a difficult time whenever he is matched up with Seahawks All-Pro tackle Walter Jones.
"He had a huge game in the AFC championship game coming off the edge on the blitz," Stevens said of Porter. "I don't think he is going to have such an easy day against Walt, though."
Porter said Stevens' remarks made it even easier to get himself ready to play in his first Super Bowl.
"He's too soft to say something like that," Porter said. "He's going to have the opportunity to back up his words. I'm going to have the opportunity to back up my words. So it's something I'm looking forward to and I'm ready to get going."
Porter also called Stevens "a first-round bust who barely made some plays this season." He also said a player of Stevens' stature "has a lot of nerve" to say what he said about Bettis.
Porter and Stevens had productive seasons. Porter had 10 1/2 sacks in the regular season and has three more in the playoffs. Stevens had 45 catches and five touchdowns during the season and has eight catches and another TD in two playoff games.
Porter's outburst was the latest in a series of strong or inflammatory comments by him during these NFL playoffs.
He riled up the Colts during the divisional round by saying they relied on tricks and wouldn't play smashmouth football, then accused the NFL officiating crew of cheating the Steelers during their 21-18 upset of the Colts. He was not fined for those remarks.
Steelers coach Bill Cowher subsequently cautioned Porter and other players about making comments that opposing teams might use for motivation. Cowher also called Porter's officiating comments "ridiculous," and Porter subsequently had little to say before Pittsburgh's 34-17 victory over Denver in the AFC championship game.
And what might Cowher think of these comments?
"I do what I have do to get myself going and he likes to see me going," Porter said. "He knows once I get going, he knows what kind of player he's going to get. That's going to make me play at a high level."
Steelers players also were cautioned before the Super Bowl about not saying anything that the Seahawks could use for motivation, but Porter didn't seem to care.
"When a guy says something who lines up in front of me on every play, I have to like that," Porter said. "He has to see me. There's no way he can hide from me. We have to meet -- over and over and over. ... I'll remind him every time I put him on his back."
Stevens found Porter's comments amusing.
"I think that will make it more exciting. That fuels the fire," Stevens said. "He's an up-tempo guy and playing that way is why football is fun." Then, reflecting on what Porter said, he added, "He said I'll be on my back?" Stevens flashed a smile.

There should be an unwritten rule that before you guarantee victories, people must have actually heard of you before. Otherwise, the "guarantee" seems to me to be merely a player who no one's ever heard of trying to do anything he can to get himself into the spotlight. This guy's been in the league for 4 years now and has never even had 600 yards receiving in any one season.
