I am very disappointed that these players decided to do what they did. The price that they will pay and that the team will pay are far higher than the chump change that they received for the items that they sold.
That said, with all due respect, it's time for perspective.
None of these five players committed a crime. They didn't hold up a liquor store, steal something, shoot someone, or abuse anyone physically or sexually. None of their parents shopped them to Ohio State. They weren't busted this year for possession of marijuana like Arkansas player Dequinta Jones or for operating a motor vehicle recklessly, without a license while under the influence of alcohol, like Arkansas player Anthony Oden--both of whom will suit up for the game.
I couldn't care less if ESPiN's exaggeration of this matter detracts from Wildhog's experience of the bowl game and the run-up to it. I'd like to suggest that our Police/Legal Blotter thread (
link) would provide a good starting place for anyone who wants to write ESPiN and encourage them to write about teams with real problems.
These players have made a very silly and costly mistake. I agree with Ohio State's intention to sit them out for the bowl game. But, if the NCAA wants to play silly buggers and sit them for five games next year but not the bowl, then they deserve to play.
We don't bash players on BP. Even when they make stupid decisions. Now that these players made a stupid decision, they and their team will have to pay a price. I am very disappointed but I do think that we need to keep this in perspective.
