Sugar Bowl: #3 Ohio State 49, #2 Clemson 28, Jan 1 in New Orleans

Offensively, if you try to run it down their throats 1) Clemson isn't Northwestern and 2) even if successful, you are intentionally not playing to your own strengths (Fields and the WR's)

Disagree. First off, as of right this moment, JF is NOT a strength of this team (as a passer) The WR's are, yes. The running game very much can be with the tip of the iceberg look we've uncovered against NU.

Also, that running game strength would likely allow JF more time and space as a passer when the Clemson secondary inevitably is invited further into the box to stop said run.

edit:

Not directly at you, Jax.

Venables has found success in the ACC because of just that. He's at a school in the ACC which is recruiting head and shoulders above the rest of the conference where, in said conference, they struggle to develop their collegiate QB's.

BV's defenses were much more of an issue in an offensively focused B12 with QB's and skill players that weren't always so fooled by the cosmetic nature of his defenses.

Clemson’s DL has two true freshman starters... I think our OL can have some success there if we can figure out how to get their blitzing LBs out of the picture... misdirection or whatever the coaches can come up with.
That's my hope too... theres no doubt they're talented but right now it's a tough order to go against our OL which is pretty veteran.

I agree with you. I think running the ball is who we are with this OL and physical backs and if we can set that up it will open up things for JF. I wouldnt say JF is hurting us but IMO he needs the running game to open things up down the field like JK did last year.

“THEY CREATE A LOT OF DISRUPTION. REALLY GOOD PLAYERS AND REALLY GOOD SCHEMES. WE'VE GOT TO DO A GREAT JOB OF FIRMING UP PROTECTION. THE QUARTERBACK HAS GOT TO UNDERSTAND THAT. AND IT JUST COMES DOWN TO PREPARATION. KNOWING THAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE SOME THINGS THAT YOU MAYBE HAVEN'T SEEN BEFORE.”– RYAN DAY ON CLEMSON'S PASS RUSH

KERRY COOMBS
  • Coombs sees a lot of similarities between Ohio State's receivers and Clemson's receivers, and he hopes the Buckeyes' defense getting the opportunity to practice against the talent in their own receivers room will help his own defense.
  • Coombs says Trevor Lawrence is "deceptively fast" and is "one of the best college quarterbacks of all-time." He says Lawrence does a great job side stepping in the pocket, avoiding pressure, his pre-snap recognition and improvising when the play is altered.
  • Ohio State and Clemson recruit against each other for the same players: "I think they're great recruiters and do a phenomenal job when they get kids on their campus. I think that's a great battle. I think we do a good job of identifying the same kids across the country."
  • Coombs compared Tommy Togiai to Robert Landers in terms of their ascension. He says Togiai is "strong as an ox" and "relentless."
  • Coombs said he's never seen something in his coaching career like he's seen this year with Haskell Garrett, who got shot in the face in August and is now an All-American defensive tackle, and “I'm glad. I hope I never see it again.”
  • He believes that Garrett got "a new lease on life" and that after his gunshot wound, his own interactions with Garrett have been bright and upbeat.
  • On Clemson's explosive offense: "I don't think anyone stops them. You wanna try to slow them down. ... If you went into a game and said we're gonna take this one thing away, they have other ways to beat you."
  • He says that Jonathon Cooper has "pushed all of his chips into this matchup" and that "we are going to see Coop's best effort in this game."
  • Coombs says that this game "means a lot" to Shaun Wade and that there's "no question" that being ejected in the first half of last season's Fiesta Bowl "was really hard on him."

None of that is good for Coombs's defense. In fact it's a blue print for a QB you need to beat a team that runs a lot of man, doesn't disguise it but has a disruptive DL.

I'll be surprised if Day doesn't have many QB run plays ready to open up the rest of the defense. OSU was handcuffed last year and it made a big difference, especially in the redzone. Will having that now be a big enough difference to make up for issues passing and a young secondary? Dunno. But it does allow for time to come off the clock to keep them off the field.

No doubt this is going to be a tough game to win, mostly because the team hasn't had enough reps. It's a tall order to ask a team in it's midseason to face a team that's had more experience and practice.

The idea of a DL causing havoc with an extremely mobile QB while the secondary sits in man all night long doesn't fill my heart with hope. We've seen that show before actually, it ain't pretty.

Trying to match your running game against an elite passing game is like bringing a knife to a gunfight imo. No doubt in my mind that Clemson can take away a run game easier than the OSU secondary can all of a sudden disguise coverages and execute them well.

Venables has the IU and NU defensive blueprint on how to affect Fields and he has significantly better players with which to do it. Lawrence and his elite skill players have the all the game film they need to see a very suspect and predictable secondary. I do agree that the OSU interior DL probably has an advantage, I just don't think it's going to mean much.
While true. Game is played for a reason.

While true. Game is played for a reason.

Despite my feelings on it right now, I can remember many thinking Ohio State shouldn’t even show up against Bama. There were a lot of people predicting a giant ass kicking for that one too and I told them they were crazy.

So, I’d love to be dead wrong. I’m certain Jax would, too.

Also... 2002 Champs. That one worked out alright. Canes fans are still salty.
