Not really. They took over some old parts of Soweto that are being bulldozed and replaced with free houses.
There are informal settlements located nearby Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and other big South African cities. Crime is high in the informal settlements and there are areas where recent migrants are living in corrugated iron shacks.
But, the desolation of District 9 is over the top. This isn't Rio. Anywhere you find the informal settlements, you will find reconstruction and development townships being built.
I don't think we'd have any of these left from the Apartheid days if Zimbabwe hadn't collapsed and sent us immigrants to the tune of 20% of our population.
I appreciate the comments guys and yes I did take offense at the asshole of the world comment.
