South Carolina apparently played an ineligible JC transfer at DB in every game last year. The NCAA is suspending him for the first 3 games in 2006.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina safety Brandon Isaac will have to sit out the first three games this season after a mistake was made determining how many credits he transferred from junior college.

The senior had been expected to start this season after playing in all 12 games in 2005.

But Isaac was actually ineligible last year because the university incorrectly gave him credits which were then used to certify him eligible to play.

University officials said the school has put new rules in place to make sure the mistake doesn't happen again.

The NCAA ruled playing Isaac when he was not eligible was a secondary violation and declared him ineligible for the first three games in 2006.

Spurrier returning to Florida

Steve Spurrier’s 1996 team left Florida as the program’s only national champions. Ten years later, they return the same way.
The ’96 Gators, including their colorful coach, will celebrate their 10-year reunion today before No. 7 Florida plays host to Southern Mississippi. Spurrier, some assistants and nearly 100 players will be recognized on the field before kickoff of the opener.
"That’s one big reason you win championships is the ability to celebrate them later," said Spurrier, whose South Carolina Gamecocks opened the season with a 15-0 victory at Mississippi State on Thursday night. "Obviously a national championship is a memory of a lifetime." Spurrier hasn’t been to a game at Florida Field since he quit coaching the Gators after the 2001 season.

Spurrier blasts SEC officials

By Rick Scoppe, The Greenville (S.C.) News

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Coach Steve Spurrier said his South Carolina Gamecocks have been the victim of "more than their share" of bad calls this year by officials and that he favored having officials from outside the region do Southeastern Conference games.

"I think it's a wonderful idea," Spurrier said on his weekly radio call-in show Thursday night. "It doesn't make sense if some guy from, I don't know, Alabama or Tennessee, is refereeing our game.

"In the SEC, I know how these guys are. They go out and have a beer with their buddies (who say), 'Man, you stuck it to them last week, didn't you? You really got Spurrier and them Gamecocks, didn't you?'

"Everybody says, 'Nah, that doesn't happen.' I think it does happen. Maybe they stick it to Florida. Maybe they stick it to ...," Spurrier said, pausing before going on: "I'm in favor of referees that don't even know who you are from other parts of the country come in and calling games. To me it makes sense."

SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said "nothing will happen today," adding that commissioner Mike Slive was taking "the weekend to review the matter. We'll have a decision on Monday" on whether the league will take any action.

It wasn't the first time Spurrier has complained about the officiating in South Carolina's 26-20 loss to then-No. 12 Arkansas on Saturday. On his Sunday television show Spurrier questioned several penalties ? or calls that weren't made.

Then on Tuesday at his weekly news conference said he was "glad" a reporter asked about the officiating, revealing he had spoken with Slive. Spurrier said Slive "assured" him he would "personally analyze and look into a couple calls."

"I'm not happy with what's happened, but there's not much we can do as coaches about it," Spurrier said on his call-in show. "I just hope the head (of officiating for the SEC) and the commissioner will thoroughly look into (the) officiating and make sure our guys are as honest as they can be and (are) making the same calls for all the teams, and I'm not sure that's happening this year."

Spurrier said he bragged about the officiating last year, saying how much better it was now than when he was at Florida and how last year the Gamecocks had "wonderful calls."

"But I can't say that this year," he said. "We're not supposed to comment on if that one (a call) was bad or good. So I'm not going to say that, but I think obviously this year we have had more than our share of bad ones."

Still, Spurrier insisted he wasn't blaming the officials for USC's loss ? the Gamecocks' third by a touchdown or less this year to a nationally ranked opponent as they prepare to face No. 6 Florida Saturday.

"We had a lot bad plays in that game. We tried to fight back and overcome them," he said. "But it didn't work out. We're not blaming the officials. Yeah, we got some bad calls. I got to admit that. We all have to admit that. (But) we had a lot of bad plays. That's why we're losers."

Wow, just when I was starting to root for Spurrier, he may wind up at Da U. Well, for them, if they are really interested in cleaning up the thug behavior, Spurrier is probably a good guy to do it. All he'll do is start running up the score again.

It's going to be really interesting to see how Spurrier, an University of Florida guy, is going to gel with the culture at Miami. Sounds like the marriage between a Southern gentleman and a south beach stripper.

Sounds like a sequel to the movie Pretty Woman.

Spurrier denies candidacy for potential Miami job

ESPN.com news services

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier denied a report Sunday that he is a candidate for the head coaching job at Miami, which could become vacant after the season.

A source close to the situation told ESPN's Joe Schad earlier Sunday that Spurrier was being considered as a replacement for current Miami coach Larry Coker, who has suffered through a season full of turmoil and is widely rumored to be on the way out.

"I am not a candidate," Spurrier told ESPN.com's Ivan Maisel. "I took this job to do what the experts said couldn't be done, which was to win an SEC championship here. We've got a good recruiting class coming in, we think.
"That [Miami] is a tough job. This is the challenge for me."
Spurrier is 13-10 in two seasons in Columbia. The Gamecocks are 6-5 as they prepare to play in-state rival Clemson on Saturday.

Miami president Donna Shalala had hoped Coker could win the final two games of the season and then could argue to bring him back. But at 5-6 and with the team in danger of missing a bowl, influential trustees and boosters have begun inquiring about prospective replacements and identified Spurrier, the former Florida coach, as the top choice with the goal of making a splashy hire.

Spurrier makes about $1.3 million a year at South Carolina and has 5 years remaining on his contract.

When Spurrier left Florida to coach the NFL's Washington Redskins in 2002, he said he desired to coach somewhere that expectations weren't so immense on a yearly basis. But a move to Miami would certainly bring added expectation. Coker is under intense pressure and scrutiny despite compiling a 53-9 record prior to this season.

On Friday, South Carolina unveiled a near-$200 million proposal that included expanding the stadium by up to 8,000 seats and an $11.4 million academic learning center.

Information from ESPN's Joe Schad and ESPN.com's Ivan Maisel was used in this report.

Spurrier's wife has been cited for minor recruiting violations. She sent hand-written notes to families of recruits. A total of 8 violations (2 others football related), were reported by USCe, which is currently on a 3-year probation for violations during the Lou Holtz years.

"She's done it every year in the past. This year's it's a violation, I guess," Spurrier said.

The infraction, which the university classified as a "Level II" secondary violation, was among eight secondary violations the school reported that took place between July and December.

The Gamecocks are getting a nice chunk of change from Under Armour. A football-only deal worth $10.8 million for 6 years.

Boyd steps up as South Carolina holds final spring scrimmage

...

South Carolina also showed off its new uniforms after finalizing its agreement with Under Armour Inc. The six-year, football-only agreement is worth approximately $10.8 million.

The South Carolina athletic department's previous deal with Russell Athletics brought the university $450,000 a year and covered four sports.

"We had several companies interested in outfitting the Gamecocks. Through negotiations we were able to parlay the success and excitement that football has created to significantly increase the amount of revenue generated from our apparel contract," athletic director Eric Hyman said.

I have always been a Spurrier fan. Growing up Florida and rooting for the Gators most of my life (and every day except three recent ons) Spurrier was great in Gainesville and actually made Duke respectable while he was there.

I hope the 'cocks are playing for an SEC title soon. But I can also see Spurrier being lured away in a year or two.

I posted this yesterday along with some comments about the SC flag issue. It got dragged into the flag thread and since Steve is my favorite Whiner I dragged its ass back over here... so there. I can whine to if I wanna.

Steamin' Steve will always be coach-of-the-year for my All Whiners team, VLloyd' is my QB coach, John L. Smith, half time interview coach, Charlie Weiss coaches the wide outs and Pete Carrol is in charge of the flaming assholes.

Like it is : Spurrier?s confidence key at South Carolina

HOOVER, Ala. ? He has a presence about him.
When he entered the lobby of the Wynfrey Hotel, a couple of hours before his turn on the SEC Media Days podium, the place started hopping.
Cameramen recorded his every move and the crowd murmured.
Steve Spurrier kept his head up and his feet moving.
Like back in the days of his triumphant march to the Heisman Trophy as a Florida Gator.
The same Florida that he coached to a national championship before an ill-fated attempt as a head coach in the NFL.
Now Spurrier is back in the SEC, starting his third year as the football boss at South Carolina.
