High School Steubenville Big Red (Merged)

Wow... can't believe it took me this long to find this forum. You guys have a great thing going here. The more forums discussing HS football, the better.

Anyway, a few notes:

We (Big Red) play Akron SVSM this week. They gave us one of our toughest games last year (we played terrible), but I've heard they are a bit down this year. I don't like to make predictions on games, especially when I haven't seen both teams play. Since I haven't seen SVSM first-hand, I'll just assume it is going to be a tough, hard-hitting game between two great programs.

As for the conversation about DeSales, they are amazing, imo. I haven't seen them play yet this year, but I've heard they are loaded. Didn't they lose most of their starters from last year? I know that Chris Thomas was an absolute beast and, if he wasn't on the field in the state championship, we would have put that game away in the first half. He made several TD saving tackles and caused a fumble when we were going in to score right before halftime. He also blocked an XP and had DeSales' biggest play (a short crossing route in the 3rd quarter that he turned into a 65 yard play to get DeSales inside our 10, which led to their score.

How do they replace a kid like that? They just simply reload every year. I have a tremendous amount of respect for them.

As for our team this year... we are VERY good. The scary thing for the rest of the division is that we are getting better and better every week, especially on the defensive/offensive lines. We are stacked at linebacker (our MLB is a stud sophomore that, when he is done, will go down as one of the best ever at his position in Big Red history, imo). Our skill positions are the same as last year, only better, imo.

Also, consider this... Zach Collaros is now 20-0 as the starting QB for Big Red. He is an incredible player... the best I have ever seen at Big Red, and that is saying something.

Obviously, we are not unbeatable, but it is going to take a GREAT team to beat us. Something like the '03 Benedictine team (as a matter of fact, that would have been a great game).

I see the top teams in the division like this:
1. Big Red (and I HATE being considered #1)
2. DeSales
3. Walsh
4. Alter

It works out almost perfectly because each of these teams are in different regions. If things work out well for each school in their regions, we could have 2 semi-final games to remember.

Anyway, I'm glad I found this forum. It seems that everyone is respectful and there are some interesting conversations going on, here.

Good luck to all teams. :)

Trying to keep DeSales discussions out of this thread, but...

I read an article on DeSales before the season started. Said they were going to a "Two-Platoon" system. Meaning most, if not all players only go one way. I think they only have one player that plays both ways.

I guess their reasoning is that they will have fresh guys out there. They don't have all of the greatest athletes this year. So they figure if they have fresh guys out there, they can make up for not having the best players.

FYI, a Two-Platoon system in Division 3 is pretty good thing to have. Alot of teams don't have the numbers to do it.

Big Red beat Akron SVSM 41-14 last night to move to 6-0. Big Red scored on their first 6 posessions. Zach Collaros, Tamawi McGhee, and Stevie Davis put on a clinic for the Big Red machine. Defense keeps improving week by week. Big Red hosts Wheeling Park(5-1) friday night. Park hasn't scrored a TD on Big Red since these two teams started playing. Their only score, a safety, back in 1982. RRR

Park is much improved this year. Showing that by beating Morgantown last night. I was at the Bellaire game, and they were the better team that night, although Bellaire pulled it out. But that still doesnt put them in Steubenville's league

Big Red beat Wheeling Park 61-7 Friday night. If we wanted to, we could have hit triple-digits on the scoreboard. We did everything but take knees the entire second half and we still managed to score 61 points. I don't believe we punted one time.

We scored on our first 8 possessions. Park's lone TD was against our 2nd string defense.

Complete domination in every way. This team is getting better and better each week.

I didn't think I would say this at the beginning of the season, but we may be better this year than last year.

How many in a row has the Big Red won? It sure seems like it's been a while.
I remember they lost to Desales in the playoffs(i think), was that their last loss?

I've never been a big Steubenville fan, but they do it the right way, year after year. How much longer is Reno going to be running the show?

Congrats on a great season and good luck bringing it home. You're clearly the favorites.

As TedGinn pointed out, our last loss was to Sheridan. I should note that our QB was injured in week 11 leading up to that game or we would have easily beaten a Sheridan team that is good against the run but bad against th pass. They basically put 10 in the box and dared us to throw with a QB that could hardly move and no real backup.

We haven't lost a regular season game since 2002.

Since the beginning of 2003, our record is 46-2 with one state title and one regional championship. The two losses were to Sheridan (2004) and Benedictine (2003).

To answer the question as to how Edison scored 19 points on us... I'm not joking when I tell you that the 3rd stringers were in midway through the first quarter. Our star tailback, Tamawi McGhee, had 7 carries for 98 yards and a couple of TDs.

Our first string defense has only given up 13 points all season. A touchdown run by Buchtel's Ernest Pitts (they missed the XP) and a nice drive by Buffalo St. Joseph (they run the spread to perfection). No one else has sniffed the goalline against our first stringers.
