Star Wars: The Old Republic

I got invited to the weekend beta, and man have i been impressed! This is like KOTOR meets City of Heroes, and it's great. I wasn't going to get the game because i don't have alot of time to play...but after this beta, i just might have to.

Argh, this game seems so sweet, but I can't talk myself into a subscription. With my schedule, I'll sometimes play weeks at a time, then go a couple weeks without playing at all. Eff.

That's how i feel. I want to play this game soo badly, but i feel like the amount of time i would play isn't worth $15/month. I really wish more MMO games would go to the lifetime subscription. I would totally pay $200-300+ straight up to play for life. Companies would probably get more subscribers with lifetime subscriptions because all the casual players and people that don't have a lot of time would actually pay and play.

I doubt that would work for the majority of MMO's. Most of them go free to play in about a year. Only WoW has been able to keep subscriptions at a high level. Subscriptions in general are going away, so lifetime subscriptions would be a bad call for most games and a huge risk for the consumer.

On a side note, I got invited to the beta but by the time I could download I only had like a day left to play. So instead of downloading it without being able to play BF3 I said screw it, played some BF3, and didn't bother with the 13+GB download.

Perhaps when games cool of I will look to get this game. That way I can put effort into it in order to get my money's worth on the subscription. Yet right now there are just too many other games to play.

Am I wrong in thinking you can get the game and play the single player story line without a subscription? Then later, if you wanted, go online with a subscription to play the task driven group objectives? Or is this subscription regardless?

I'm pretty sure it's 100% online, and therefore requires a subscription to go online. You can ignore interactions with others, but the game will be filled with other players in many spots. Plus I bet the more challenging tasks will require help from other players.

Alright, got another invite for the beta. Decided this time to download it. Initially got a 5 GB download and thought "oh, must just be the beta. That is pretty snall" That downloaded, and then went to a download over 13GB. OK, that makes sense. 18 GB total. Once that finished, another 5 GB download popped up. WTF? That downloaded. Then my download timed out. Restarted the computer, and a 800MB download started. What is going on? When will the downloads stop? I am able to play the game at 11AM tomorrow, that is if I actually downloaded everything. At this point I am not sure they will stop.

edit: SOB!!!!! I just finished the 800GB download, and now it's downloading something else. Will this never stop!

Haha, I didn't get smooth gameplay till the 2nd day I tried beta, because of the amount of background downloading it does.

It's well worth it in my opinion. I begin my beta download again for another round of beta when I return from Thanksgiving on Monday.

Well, I finally got to play for a few hours (after 9 separate downloads...I wish they would have made it 1 so I at least had an idea when it would be complete).

Overall it's good. The voice acting is fantastic. Most of the story is good (I am doing the Jedi one). The side missions can be a grind at times. Most of the stuff I don't like is simply the stuff I don't like about MMO's. Respawning enemies and grinding. The character models are also pretty weak, but again that is mostly an MMO thing. They need to do it in order to get as many subscribers as possible to fund this huge of a game (in other words, high end hardware not needed).

I am not sure this whole style of play is my thing, but it's pretty polished even at this point. For a beta it performs fantastic, and the included feedback system is a good idea. If you are into MMO's, especially WoW, you will really like this game. Maybe if it gets cheaper or I get bored I might start playing this regularly, but at it's cost I am not sure it's for me.

The game comes out officially on Tuesday, Dec. 20. But a lot of people are allowed early access.

If anyone is interested, Studepaber's guild is "Show me your crits", and will be on the server "Mind Tricks". My main will likely be "Zurpzurp" (Sith Warrior). Like me up, or Studepaber, or anyone in "Show me your crits". A lot of Buckeye fans, but it sounds like another guild will merge with this one, and who knows if they're even sports fans.
