Star Wars (May the Force be with you)

Agree.

I don't go to the movies to end up pissed off. I mean, the Phantom Menace is universally panned, and I agree that Jar Jar is just a modern day "Yoda" (in the "we need to sell a cute little Muppet" sense) that flopped... But.. I wasn't really watching the movie with such a critical eye that I was offended by the whole thing like a lot of people were. I liked Qui Gon (sp?) very much, actually. I don't know... I guess in my head, I planned on writing more than I guess I care to now that I've started .. but, really it boils down to this... This is entertainment... Suspend disbelief, eat some fucking popcorn, and enjoy yourself for a few hours. What's the big deal?

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't call Phantom Menace a "great movie" by any stretch. But, I sat and watched it, and I didn't feel cheated out of my ticket price and popcorn. On the other hand, I wasn't expecting Shakespeare, so...

So, this isn't a resounding endorsement for the series I guess, but you lead me to a point I was struggling with earlier, but there's a tendency to judge these things as a collection of space fantasy scenes... I mean, A New Hope is kind of dumb as a story, but out of nowhere you remember the scene in the cantina, the Trash compactor in the prison block (and to Josh's point, Ford going, "Uh, everything's fine situation normal [blasts comm panel] boring conversation anyway") and flying down the trench to destroy the death star (obviously there are lots more). Phantom Menace? Kind of a lame second half but you still have that opening with Jedi's fucking with the Trade federation, pretty good battle on Naboo, and of course the duel with Darth Maul (also the pod race I guess but I wasn't as big a fan). Converesly, you remember the cringy scenes in The Last Jedi... Mary Poppins Leia, nearly everything on Canto Bight, and Rey visiting Luke was just all around kind of dumb... and Poe just being all around dumb... I mean the Crait stuff was pretty good, I'll leave poor Rose Tico alone. (And of course we have scenes in Attack of the Clones which Josh has so eloquently reminded us, beach rash is real... ). No, I didn't mention Jar Jar, so for posterity: Jar Jar.

The "Mary Poppins Leia" was probably, and including Jar Jar, mind you, the absolute worst thing ever to happen in the franchise. Just dreadful on every level. I thought the end of TLJ was strong, but it took an awful long time to get there, that's for sure.

It took me a while in real time to shake off the Mary Poppins while watching the movie, honestly.

"Well, they killed Leia... what the fuck?"

The vacuum of space just isn't what it used to be.

Well, this was a long long time ago... and we can hear the lasers and proton torpedos and whatnot.... so maybe it just is a vacuum now and wasn't then?

At least she didn't scream "Nooooooooooooooooooooo!" in a whiny voice I guess?

I just sat there saying "Fuck...oh no..."

I hope there's a new Marvel series coming up right on the heels of next week's season finale to get me away from Mando until season 2.
I wholeheartedly endorse ‘Watchmen’ on HBO if you haven’t watched it yet. It is phenomenal and on par with anything Marvel has done, IMO.

Now, all of the discussion of how “Abrams made a shit movie BLAAARRRGGGHHHH”...I dunno, man. People are odd creatures. Like was said above, this whole saga was launched on a pretty flimsy narrative. What made it great (for me, and I assume many others) is it was just fun, had great characters and some kick ass fight scenes. Every time I watch these movies, I turn into a 7 year old again. I enjoy all of it. One of the big knocks about the new trilogy from what I’ve seen is that it tends to be over reliant on call backs to the first episodes 4-6...but I love that stuff. My only quibble with the entire saga is Phantom Menace. I hate that fucking movie...IMO, it was too, I don’t know, cartoony? Like it just doesn’t fit in, tone-wise, with any of the other episodes. Plus, growing up on the original trilogy, I had REALLY high expectations and the first time I saw it, I was like...

...and I’ve only rewatched it once. Hate it. The rest of the movies all have their flaw (eps 2-3 in particular), but I’m not watching them for great dialogue, or a though-provoking story. I’m watching it because it’s fun. I really, really enjoyed the first two installments of the new trilogy and suspect I’ll really, really enjoy Rise of Skywalker when we go see it next week (I always wait for the crowds to die down). BTW, Rogue One is neck/neck with Empire Strikes Back for my favorite of the saga. Just a terrific movie.

tl;dr...people that get legitimately pissed off at these movies need to find a hobby. This shit ain’t Shakespeare or Pynchon.

What’s great is that Lucas created such a deep canon, that there is a lot to mine from for future features. The Mandalorian is amazing, would love to see another series like it. Also, I still really want a Boba Fett movie.

So, Rise...

Holy. Shit!

With the exception of one scene (you'll know when you see it, it's THAT scene, but at least it resolved itself well), that was amazing and everything I wanted out of it. But damn I'm not ready to give up the Skywalker saga.
I want to know what Rey does to maintain balance in the Force with her new (neutral colored?) saber. Does she go hunting down Sith and Jedi relics to destroy them? Does she train others in the ways of the Force for defense? I need to know!

Sounds like a Disney+ series to me. Without doing any reading or research on other theories. My thought is:

The Skywalkers were conjured out of the force to bring balance. It took a few generations but after they succeeded they returned to the force. Kind of funny Palpatine spent years trying to turn Skywalkers to the dark side, but let his one true relative be corrupted by the Jedi. I'd really like to see the timeline of how Palpatine had a secret family, which would have had to happen before Mace Windu turned him into the disgusting creature he was in the original trilogy.

Was pretty concerned about the movie after what I had read. But I liked it quite a bit. Certainly had flaws and was way way too rushed. But it was a lot of fun.

It's obvious that they didn't think out parts 2 and 3. TLJ had some excellent parts, questionable parts, but ultimately didn't advance the plot outside of 3 characters. I really really wish they had introduced some New Republic/Resistance forces at the end of that movie. Would've set up a much more interesting premise for EP 9. They just needed to give the trilogy to one director or the other. Abrams does a good job, but his movies don't have a lot of depth. Johnson would've taken some chances and introduced more risk. Either would've at least been able to create better pacing.

But hey, it felt like Star Wars and I'm excited to see what they do with The Mandalorian and new movies/series in the future.
