yo quiero start your own fucking country.

there are a lot of rather weak 3rd world nations out there. if you have such a hard on for writting a national anthem... take one of em over. build your own country with your own language and your own laws. maybe then you can stop bitching about how unfair ours are.

I guess I'm not sure what the problem is here.

This country is "The Melting Pot". We do not have a "National Language". It is assumed by too many that English is the official language of this country, when it most definitely is not.

Would Canadians get upset about "Oh Canada" being sung in Italian by Andrea Bocelli or Luciano Pavarotti? NO. They wouldn't.

I'm quite interested in hearing this version of the song. Maybe its my love of music in general and the creativity of it, but how this can offend someone is beyond me. Of course I'm of the belief that foreign language should be required in school. Starting very young. Like 1st grade.

In a global community that we have developed, communication with people in in other countries is as easy as logging on to your PC at home. To assume that everyone should speak English in order to communicate with us is beyond arrogant. A little respect for others can go along way in mending fences and reaching peaceful endings to negotiations and conflicts.

While I believe that English is a good choice for the official "International Business Language", I don't see any good in requiring others to speak it to just say "hi".

Look I have no problem with LEGAL immigrants. That's how this country was formed if I remember correctly. Just don't come over here and try to change stuff. If you liked it where you were at you should of stayed there. But don't come here and try to change things it's a total package. You get great sports, hot dogs, american beer, the right to vote and the Star Spangled Banner sung in ENGLISH!!!

Just being a devil's advocate here.

How would you feel about the National Anthem being sung in the Cheyenne or Ojibwe languages? Or any of the hundreds of languages that were spoken on this continent prior to English or Spanish? :wink2:

Very good point. Our ancestors destroyed thier way of life. I just don't want to have my way of life destroyed like thier's.

If it isn't broken don't fix it. By us changing the national anthem so they can understand it make sit so that most americans won't be able to understand it. Bottom line they need to learn english. I shouldn't have to change the way I live for them.

No one is asking you to change the way you live. Its an artistic interpretation of a song. It isn't "being changed". They aren't passing laws to say "From now on, the 'Star Spangled Banner' must be sung in Spanish".

Can you imagine that attitude towards everything? One guy lines up to hit a golf ball left handed, and everyone else in the foursome wigs out becuase he's "making them change the way they live".

Uh, last I checked the national anthem wasn't being changed. Some guy decided to record a version in spanish and a bunch of stupid people got upset. it seems that you are one of them.

The way the question reads I would say no, as I don't think it should be sung in Spanish.

However, if someone wants to sing the Spanish, Welsh, or Tagalog version of it, why should I or anyone else care. Do I want to hear someone leading it in another language other than English when I am at a public event, no. However, if someone was standing beside me and singing it in their own language, why would I care. In fact, if I knew they were doing it respectfully, it would make me proud of my country.

After all, he notes, American immigrants borrowed the melody of the "Star Spangled Banner" from an English drinking song.
Note the highlighted word there...English-speaking immigrants used an English song. The SSB should be learned, and sung, in English. Go to any non-English speaking country and sing their national anthem in English and they'll think you're fucking crazy (that's if the don't beat your ass).

Funny, but I could've swore I read somewhere that our founding fathers had a vote over which language--English or German--would be our official language, and English won by a single vote.

I've spent a fair amount of time with the Latino community here, and have to say it would be really nice to hear the Banner sung in Spanish at an event. Recognizing heritage and expressing patriotism for the U.S. concurrently makes a great statement.

Doing it as an in-your-face "we won't learn English" statement would make me roll my eyes, but it would also be a surprise. The vast majority of the people seem to want to speak or have their children speak English fluently because they recognize that so many of the opportunities in this country depend upon being able to communicate effectively.

This British dude releasing a Spanish version so the remix can come out a little later politicizing the song with the immigration issue is less appealing given that the orginal holds meaning as it is, but it seems a legitimate form of artistic and political statement. I just won't buy it because "These kids have no parents, cause all of these mean laws ... let's not start a war with all these hard workers, they can't help where they were born" doesn't seem a useful solution, even though I do support making it easier to immigrate legally. (An Ellis Island idealist I suppose.)
