AUSTIN, Texas (AP)?The last time Texas reached the Final Four, small but spectacular point guard T.J. Ford led the way.

D.J. Augustin could be just the ball-handling wizard to get the Longhorns back there again.

Finally out from under the long and skinny shadow of Kevin Durant, Augustin has had a breakout year, leading the Longhorns to the Big 12 regular-season title. The sophomore led the team in scoring (19.2 points) and the Big 12 in assists (5.9) per game.

Contd...

Texas is 14-4 against teams that made the tournament this year and 8-2 in games decided by 5 pts or less. Texas has not faced a frontcourt comprised of two mobile, active, shot blocking and offense threat 7 footers all season. It will be hell. I still think they can do it, but it will be very tough, and if they are cold from 3 point land, then fail. That simple.

But if one of the L?pez twins get into foul trouble they are done. Augustine has not had many poor outside shooting games this year... has he?

In early February, he did have this run of 5 games:

01 of 07 Baylor
06 of 14 at Okla
05 of 22 at Iowa St.
01 of 13 Kansas
02 of 12 at Baylor

In the tournament so far:
02 of 08 Austin Peay
04 of 14 Miami

He's at .443 for the season, .380 from 3-pt range, so he's a decent shooter, but very capable of an off night.

Justin Mason of Texas pulls down a rebound between Mitch Johnson and Fred Washington of Stanford during the first half.

HOUSTON -- Texas coach Rick Barnes usually has his chin in his hand with his elbow on his knee, no matter the time and score of a game. But even he could sense the moment.
At the 12:52 mark of a 82-62 Sweet 16 victory over third-seeded Stanford last night, the Cardinal had cut a double-digit Texas lead to one point.
Baskets by A.J. Abrams and Damion James stretched that lead to five. But the 20,000-plus Texas fans among the 34,000 inside Reliant Stadium were still standing in uncomfortable silence when D.J. Augustin intercepted a pass by Stanford's Landry Fields and scored on a breakaway layup.

I think Trent Johnson made a tactical mistake when he kept one of the L?pez twins off the court for so long. That was really only Stanford's chance was to keep both the twins on the floor at the same time as long as possible. IMO
