Spring Practice Discussion, and Why I Think It's Unfair That I Don't Get to Watch

I hear ya bro. You see the coverage that some of these other schools get and it drives you nuts that Tressel pretty much locks down practice.

I check the Michigan sites and they got 10 minutes videos of practice..

As a fan you really love to see what's going on and get a look at the new guys competing, but Tressel doesn't seem to care about that.

I don't get the secrecy, but hey, he's in charge

Pete Carroll is about as open as it gets. Fans get almost full access to his practices. Now, I'm not saying Tressel needs to go that far but all we get until the spring game is some pics of the players stretching for the first practice? I think he can "risk" a couple more practices worth of photos.

And it's not about him gaining anything. It's just a nice way to show appreciation for the fans.

Ah, but I digress. Still love Tress.

Please, this is such a ridiculous argument. If we are concerned about spies at practice, then our staff has serious issues in gameplanning. Nobody says the entire practice needs to be open, but it would be great for the fans if the media was allowed to get some video and pics every days for a portion of practice.

You are right, he doesnt have to give the fans anything, but as a fan I have the right to come out and say I think it sucks bigtime that he runs practice in that capacity.

As pointed out above Pete Carroll gives ton of access to the fans and media and he's running arguably the most dominant program in the country.

I agree that it's not much of an argument.

That's probably because it's not really meant as an argument. It was only an answer to the argument that "USC does it". To me, that's a weak argument for anything. They are clowns compared to us. Yes, they do things their way effectively; but it is not our way.

As far as whether practice should be open or closed; it would not be possible to exaggerate the magnitude of the fuck that I do not give about that.

As far as it goes with me is that it appears to fit with the rest of the Tressel-way; and the Tressel-way fits with Ohio State and it fits with Ohio high school football coaches. I didn't used to put such a premium on such things; but then we had Cooper.

So to sum up, it seems to be consistent with the way JT does things. Beyond that, I don't care.

I have to believe that Tressel at practice is not the Tressel we all know and love. He probably put Beanie in a toe lock last year for fumbling during practice. That's why the medical staff never came out and specified what the injury was. Shugart's shoulder? He...uh...fell down the stairs. Mike Adams shoulder? Don't ask Tress. Why is practice closed to the public? It sure as hell ain't because he's trying to keep the play book secret.:wink2: *

Yes because a game plan isn't affected by someone else already knowing what it is. Maybe Eisenhower should've invited Hitler for tea on the English side of the channel the week leading up to D-day.

If you want an example of what a closed practice, and great game planning does look back to a dark January night in Glendale circa 2007.

There is no benefit for a football team to have an open practice, even for small portions. Seemingly the only benefit is for fans that want some additional content. To me those same fans should probably have a bigger gripe with any negative effect, than with lack of media content.

I don't think it's as much about secrecy, I think they just prefer insulation. In my opinion, it's not as much about what people can take away with their eyes, but rather how their presence can take away from the focus & small things about practice.

As a photographer, the extreme nature of their privacy is disappointing, but I certainly understand it. Players need to get better during practice, not play for the fans/media. Another element are details from practice leaking out. I believe a player's injury (Tyson?) popped up on the message boards before they could let the family know.

And while Tressel's playcalling is a bit predictable, it is still best to keep out unwanted eyes... even if only for a few instances. If folks (and potential UM scouts) are allowed to watch practice in 06, would UM have been better prepared for Teddy lining up at TE in a hurry, rather than assuming that Beanie = run (like normal)?
