Spring Football - 2005 (mega-merge)

I was pleased w/ what I saw of Haw-hit the holes and kept driving his legs. He is not a between the tackles power back, but he saw the holes and got thru them in a hurry. He also looked a bit lankier than I would have expected.
Hoobler played w/ a bad atitude-I liked that, even tho the late hit on Smith was dumb. It was good to see Lane out there making plays. I think a lot of people-myself included-kind of forgot about him.

The Buckeyes' best all-around threat on offense, wideout-kick returner Ted Ginn Jr., played cornerback in the second half for the Scarlet. That's where he was supposed to play as a freshman last year before showcasing the sprinter's speed that made him an invaluable part of Ohio State's offense.<!--startclickprintexclude-->
I must have missed that. Did he look good at corner?

God it was cold!!!

I really liked what Haw did in the second half and I really liked what Schnittker was doing, he looked more like a tailback then a fullback. All three Qb's looked like shit, throwing the ball over the receiver and things like that, they need a lot of work. Ginn did well for the time he played. Hobbler looked great, swatted away at least five balls. Skeet and Pretorious both looked pretty good kicking, except Skeet's missed pat. I think they did well kicking off, but they're not quite Nugent caliber. The long snapper's need lots of work, I think at most two snaps were on target the entire game. The punters need to work on getting the ball higher.

I remember coming in to play goaline on greys last attempt to get in the endzone before the half. He looked a little lost about where he was supposed to be, but the ball never came his way that play either.

Lofty Expectations.

After the Spring Game, has anyone become dissillusioned with all of our fresh talent?

Are hopes still high?

Before the spring game, I would have bet my last pair of shoes that the Bucks were headed to a BCS game (I was actually really confident about a Rose Bowl appearance). After... not so sure anymore.

Someone calm me down and tell me I'm overreacting and COMPLETELY wrong. Please.

You are over-reacting and you are completely wrong. Feeling better now?

Crap weather. Split teams. Vanilla offense. Some good high points. 2nd string linebacking corps was still impressive. Running game will not be a problem. Not gonna show Texas anything.

Wasn't a Notre Dame spring game that runs the first team over the second.

OK. If that didn't work, inhale deeply into a paper bag and repeat after me, there's no place like home, there's no place like home...

Yea, you were overreacting before the Spring game and your overreacting after. The Spring game is a time for the players to do their best to position themselves for the fall. Therefore, its not a team you're seeing, its 11 individuals all trying to make a huge statement for the coaches. Plays are called to help evaluate talent, not necessarily to give the best results for the team. There are all kind of limitations including normal starters who don't see much action. I don't put much stock in how they play at this point. And JT has shown he can pull them together by September.

As for Lofty Expectations before the Spring game, I suspect we get that every year. I do believe this team has the potential to be great, maybe even make a run for NC, but the odds of that happening are still pretty slim. There are just so many obstacles in front of us, plus all those things you can't predict such as injuries, bad breaks, etc. It just takes one down game, and the NC has gone. Most teams tend to have a couple of down games a year, some you survive, others you don't

As for me, I'm really trying not to let expectations get too crazy. But damn, its hard not to, especially if we can get a few key early wins. Should be a fun season...

There's 2 threads about this, already. There's something like "post-game reactions" and the "spring game" thread also goes into this topic.

The general reaction I have is the same I've been seeing on the message board: Zwick looked pretty bad (NOT deserving of boos, though) and I wasn't too impressed with the other QBs, though, either. I buy the "weather" excuse a little bit, but not much - that's what the fall is like in Ohio - better get used to it.

I'm no less confident in the Bucks now than I was before the game yesterday, though I wouldn't bet "my last pair of shoes" for a BCS game. The QBs, to me, seemed to be out of sync with the receivers. Given time and reps, they'll all be on the same page by the Miami game. I am not worried about the passing game, despite yesterday's performance.

I was very impressed with the running game. Pittman, Haw and especially Schnitker. Schnittker. However you spell it..

The defense looked good - especially 2nd team LBs. If anything, I am more confident about the defense than I was before, which is saying a lot.

Normally, I would be worried about special teams after that showing. But I was worried after last year's spring game, since it was a similar performance (from what I remember). They did pretty well during the fall, though. I'm sure the team will be on track this fall, too.

One thing you got to remember about the offense is that they did take it to the defence during the jersey scrimmage when they had their full first team togeter (except Holmes) which says a lots. That's why you shouldn't worry about the offense. Plus the offence only has like somewhere around fifteen plays to call for evaluation purposes and to make sure they don't reveal too much.

Link to where BC states this is about half way through the article.

So, there was no question that this game was going to be a vanilla game. If you add in the terrible weather conditions, I'm not to surprised the offence didn't look to good. Plus some of the young defensive players looked great which just gives us more depth. Overall, I definately think you are overreacting and should have the same expectations as before. This team in my mind can compete for a national title.

If you watched the spring game and have doubts that this team can be a BCS contendor, then you gotta be crazy!

We have tons of skill at every position. Don't let the QBs fool you, Smith will be great, as indicated by the drive where he called the plays he wanted to run (4-4, 48 yds. 1td.. 55 yd drive).

The D is really really good, and the offense will not be far behind.
