Spring Football - 2005 (mega-merge)

Here is one thing I take from this game -- weather notwithstanding -- that I have not heard anyone say.

Remember how a couple of days ago we were reading about the scrimmage? How the Offense really has it over the D this year? Not after this game. Bragging rights must have a short half life in tOSU locker room.
Today the D got a an assist from mother nature, but, lets face it these kids have played in inclement weather before. The D put in their own jabs today to pop a couple of balloons (er egos).
Top this off by throwing in some execution errors in the special teams and you get the kind of low production scrimmage we saw today.

On the positive side, and reflecting others comments -- it was good to see Frost actually reel one in as a TE, Hoobler had some madman moments on D! Gonzalez was (IMO) the WR least affected by the weather -- bodes well, and best of all we have two RBs with speed.

I can't believe, after all the excitement we hinged on this game, that so many people couldn't even come :( It's so sad. I wasn't going to make it to the tailgate, but man, I dragged my poor dad to this game thinking that it was the place to be, that it wasn't going to be so bad, and we sat there in ponchos and three layers of clothing freezing to death. I kept looking around for Buckeye Planet shirts and saw none. Jeez.

But I *DID* get to experience my first ever game in the shoe... even though it was rather unusual.

Now I feel horrible. :(

That's enough of that, girlfriend.

Don't let anything ruin the fact that you got to see the Buckeyes on the ol' home turf. But you do need to get to a regular season game... if I find tix, I'm going to buy an extra and make you sit with me.

Now gost8 has to quit apologizing for the weather (what an ego!) and get crackin' on fall tailgates...

well carpenter is just 2 inches taller and has smaller legs so thats why hawk looks heavier...

WLB 47 #A.J. Hawk*** 6-1, 238, Sr.

SLB 42 #Bobby Carpenter***6-3, 255, Sr.

For some reason those numbers just do not match up in my opinion. Actually my buddy and I were commenting how much bigger Hawk looked (weight wise) than Carpenter. Maybe Bobby just wears his weight different, I'm not sure, but seeing AJ today reminded me of the physical speciman of Katzenmoyer.

Carp. is definately taller, but even with the height factored in I have a hard time seeing him outweigh AJ by 17 pounds.

Dead on. Football is a team game. Even if you return 22 starters you have 22 other kids starting a Spring game who are non-starters. How can you then mix and match those players and judge the peformance of either uint based on the results? Plus we had injuries. Plus we had limitations on what teams could do.

You can try to look at individual performances in the context of what was going on - and I saw some pretty good examples of that - but not much else.

No player suffers more in a game like this than the QB. Both Zwick and Smith demonstrated on the field under real conditions last season that they could play the position. I can't lend much credence to criticism of the way they performed in a scrimmage under the most artificial of circumstances.

Lot of talent. Lot of speed. And I think the players understood it was a practice more so than most of us.

Great post OH8CH!!!! Your last quote says it all.

There is absolutely no way to judge anything from this game.

First off it was freezing, you could tell some of the guys were shying away from a contact in the first quarter, b/c they werent preparing for it.

Don't forget players like Hawk, Carp, Salley, Ginn, where all out in the second half. Also to try and judge a running game by a mix and match o-line is not possible.

All I know is that we have a ton of pieces to make a run at the crown and I can't wait.

Official attendance - 22,649. (Still an insane number given the conditions.)

Winner - with a remarkablly close projection - justanotherbuck with 22,370.

I will PM justanotherbuck with instructions on the test bet I will create to settle this. But first I have to get 'cant call it' to post some naked pictures of men so BuckeyNation27 stays distracted while we carry this out.

What was up with all the late hits and personal fouls? My guess is that they were messing around after the play was whistled dead and forgot that the officiating crew's presence?

I cant imagine JT and co liked that all too much.
Some of them were just stupid late hit penalties, you cant have that crap.

Downing tweaked a knee and was on the ground for a minute or two. But he limped off the field on his own power, heading for the locker room to be checked out. I haven't heard anything about the medical report yet, although Tressel after the game said that he didn't think they got any major injuries during the game.

Gotta agree with most about not being able to draw any conclusions from the game. The running backs seem to be a lot more instinctive than Ross and Hall were. It's all about making the right cut and that really cant be coached. Haw showed real nice speed on his TD sprint to the pylon. What the hell was up with the late hits and unsportsmens out there. Looked like a John Cooper coached undisicplined team. Garentee you that will change. QB was a wash. Cant tell anything in those kind of conditions. Still think it's TS's team. Anyway, had a good time anyway but it was a miserable drive back to C-town. Wish more of you would have shown up but it's more than understandable and we'll hook up in the fall.
