Spring Football - 2005 (mega-merge)

The parking lots in front of the 'Shoe have a special addendum to their signs. They say "This parking lot is University property. All alcoholic beverages are prohibited on University property." How strictly the going about enforcing that rule is anybody's guess.

If there is anything in particular that BPer's feel that is not being brought to the tailgate, that everyone would want to have, I could try and pick it up after I leave the office on Friday. As it stands I will try and be there as early as I can be (like 9:30 or 10 at the latest, I'm dragging my little bro along and he's not on an ultra early schedule). When I leave will be determined when the gates open. I'm going to try for an A Deck seat. Any thoughts on what to bring or when the gates open?

Just pure speculation on my part....but i envision a vanilla game on saturday.....and also for Miami (OH) in the opener as well.....

no sense giving those longhorns any more info than they need.....

the "closed" jersey game probably showed more than either the spring game or the opener....

[sarcasm]BFS will soon be an ESPiN reporter. Shits his pants to be the first to post info, then goes back and makes multiple corrections to post (see this post and OSU's huge recruiting weekend). No, wait, ESPiN doesn't actually make corrections. They just move on to the next story. Sorry to lump you into the same group there buddy.[/sarcasm]

Even if there are snow showers there will be at least 30-35K at the least. I can't imagine people not turning out to watch Teddy Ginn play for $5.
Watch how you say that. Tomorrows Sportscenter could be led with Ohio State pays Ginn $5 to play in spring game.

I really hate those guys.

Here’s my analysis:

Scarlet:
I'd like to see Scarlet come out in shotgun with Dukes and Hall wide, Hamby at TE and shotGinn on both sides with Haw in the tight slot on the other side. JZ and TB should be able to do whatever they want for as long as Ginn plays. When Ginn isn't in. Go with Haw and Stan White in the backfield and try to establish the run with some play action passing. Haw, and White can catch out of the backfield. Add Hamby, Dukes, and Hall to that group and you still have good passing threats. Scarlet is soft at corner so they will have to get a good pass rush. They have good safeties so they should be able to play nickel if it’s legal. Bigger LB’s might have a hard time covering Smith. Carp has to be big on QB runs.

Gray:
Gray has to go 2 backs with Pittman and Schnittker/Johnson and try to establish the run. Put in some boots for Smith to get him outside the pocket. I don't think Gonzo, Lyons, and Frost are going to be able to give the downfield threat like Scarlet has. Gray has to be able to run the ball either with Pittman or Smith. Smith is best running out of the spread shotgun and Gray doesn't have the players for that. Gray is also going to have some issues with pass protection mainly off of the edges, but they should be good at run blocking. Smith has to have a Scum like performance for Gray to have a chance, but he doesn’t have Ginn on his team this time. If Gray doesn’t rush for at least 150 as a team Scarlet runs away with it. Gray has good corners so they should be able to cover, but Scarlet has a lot of speed.

No huge surprises in the draft. But a couple of minor surprises:

1) Stan White picked ahead of Dionte Johnson. I had thought Dionte had really been asserting himself at the FB position. This reads to me that we've got three stud FBs.

2) Only 5 OL on the gray team? I thought we were deeper than that on the OL. I know we've got a few guys out, and we're waiting for a couple freshmen to show up, but I thought we were well into a 3 deep. I guess this will test their conditioning. Could see some hands on hips and wheezing in the 4th quarter.

Should be a fun game. Ya know, I couldn't care less who wins.

"Hello my name is..." tags = GAY!!!

I think these are clutch. Do you really want to walk up to every single person and say what about you...who are you? The name tags will make it ten times easier & more fun.

And as for the cornhole...I thought I had my fill of that at OU. Man that freaking bean bag game has taken over the world.

I know, scarlet colored glasses had me thinking we're further along than we are just yet. I really like the 2 deep on the offensive line. But it makes us realize that we could still be vulnerable to the injury bug up front. Baby steps and patience, huh? May be wise counsel, but I'd be more comfortable with 15 hosses ready to go.

how long ago was it that the spring game couldn't be split into two teams b/c there were not enough o-lineman to make up two squads...

I recall last Spring Bollman saying that he had more scholarship OL in camp than at any time he had ever coached anywhere. This year that number is even higher (not accounting for injuries).
