• Follow us on Twitter @buckeyeplanet and @bp_recruiting, like us on Facebook! Enjoy a post or article, recommend it to others! BP is only as strong as its community, and we only promote by word of mouth, so share away!
  • Consider registering! Fewer and higher quality ads, no emails you don't want, access to all the forums, download game torrents, private messages, polls, Sportsbook, etc. Even if you just want to lurk, there are a lot of good reasons to register!

We have 11 qualifying donations since the challenge was issued... whee! The vBank will cover the balance and extend the incentive to the end of May.

Good timing EOB, because the extra incentives of vCash are going to expire after tommorrow...

Before I even start prattling, a huge thanks to Deety (in particular) for conceptualizing, organizing, and propelling this drive.

Thanks as well to everyone who participated, whether such participation came in the form of economic or any other form (moral, informative, inspirational, etc.) support.

Certain generalized truths about past drives held true with this one. Rather than many giving small (something I'd be much more comfortable with), few gave large. Five people represent 51% of our current total, which I'm told is $6,676.29. This is not to say that they did something wrong, or that the people who gave smaller increments came up short -- it is simply a cold hard fact that speaks both to the difficulty of engaging and enabling the majority, even in the presence of a very motivated and enthusiastic minority.

I miss the days where BP was completely free and commercially unadulterated. The times where our bandwidth was the generous allowance of a friend of a friend, our maintenance and upgrades handled when and as I could swing it, our pages full of nothing but our own words and thoughts. I don't think we're less for having the ads on the site or running these drives; on the contrary, it's inarguable that these steps have not only allowed us to stay online against ever-increasing expenses once that magical "free" seal broke a few years back, but have also allowed us to prosper, improve, adapt, and grow. The same can and will be said of this drive. We are adding memory to our machine, we are upgrading every single piece of software that drives the site (Gentoo Linux, PHP, MySQL, Apache, vBulletin, and dozens of various support programs and mods). We are implementing a new blogging extension to the site that will allow people to serialize certain regular posts (offerings from our outstanding recruiting team come to mind, post-game epic scrawls from Oh8ch, and myriad new and untested offerings from anyone who sees fit), an extension of the posting process, allowing the collection of singular voices, and I think it will be another vehicle for motivated fans to be heard. So we continue to enable and create by way of these drives, by way of this drive, and a deep-felt thanks goes out from me, on behalf of myself and on behalf of the site as a whole, to those who make it possible to keep those proverbial lights on and bright.

BP has, as I have said before, exceeded my expectations on a number of fronts. I am no less a Buckeye fan than I ever have been. Yet if I were forced to give up either this community, or my ability to watch and follow OSU football, I would surrender the latter. I know that seems ridiculous, and I am completely thankful no such decision would ever have to be made; but I do want to illustrate that the camaraderie, friendships, connections, conversations, personalities, etc. etc., everything that makes this place more than just a connection of ethereal voices can, and in my case has at some unknown point in the past, risen in personal importance beyond the spectacle of the sport itself. Many of you represent a quite real extension of my concept of family, brothers and sisters who would (and have) do for me in times of need, and for whom I would and will go to great lengths to do the same.

This site is fortunate to have some extraordinary people behind it. Take a moment now and then to consider those who keep the boards in order, develop new and compelling content, bring to BP's attention whispers and news that in other venues are kept to privileged and conspiratorial "super-secret wink-wink" circles. All while *always* keeping a responsible eye on how this scuttlebutt might affect those it deals with, always trying to be fair to athletes, families, staff, and others. It should come as little surprise that other sites have recognized the unbelievable talent and quality of many of our volunteers, no surprise that in several cases offers have been made to lure them away to green(back)er pastures, and it's worth considering what it means and says about BP that they have eschewed that for the often thankless and demanding toil of volunteering an extraordinary amount of time to making this place work.

Over the last year or two, I have been putting everything into trying to get myself back on track. As I wrapped up (online) classes for the degree I left behind when I left OSU due to failing health, this place flourished under the direction of those you see with the admin tags (principally), as well as those tagged as super mods, mods, and the various contributors. As I turned a corner some years ago and focused wholly on fighting for health benefits, figuring out creative ways to keep the lights on, finishing my degree, researching the health issues, and most recently, preparing to get back into see docs, my time and presence around here has been somewhat sporadic, and largely limited to quiet behind-the-scenes efforts. In some form or another, I deal with issues related to BP almost every single day, and yet my post count hasn't climbed much over the past 24-months. Under any other circumstances, a site such as this would falter. This one has not only prospered, but has improved in quality and vision as the direct result of the people who drive it. I won't mention individual names here, because I shouldn't have to and I don't want to draw artificial lines that would create tiers between different depths of personal investments (I mean that in a non-economic sense, but almost to a last, the people who drive this site with their own efforts are the bigger financial givers as well) and contributions. So while we take stock of this latest drive, while we consider what the site is, why we feel about it the way we do, how it came to be where it is now -- don't for a heartbeat forget those who make it what it is, and do so only for their own passion and drive; not (as elsewhere) for a check, a few moments on television, or for some pathological need for a form of celebrity. That distinction isn't intended to elevate BP above our commercial brethren, rather those who make BP what it is over their peers.

As everyone knows, we take contributions year 'round. We simply make some noise about it once or twice a year with these drives. I'm not signaling an end to our willingness to accept or appreciate contributions -- merely a close to wide-spread affirmative efforts to induce the same.

We're on the cusp of another season that should continue to force the rest of the nation to begrudgingly accept that Ohio State is one of the absolute top programs of the BCS era. We have an unreasonable amount of talent on this team, a favorable but not particularly assailable schedule, and expectations higher than any program reasonably should possess in the era of scholarship limits, burgeoning talent, and great flux in terms of the haves and have-nots in the top tier of college football. It's a great time to be a fan, it's a great time for BP to be such a great community and resource, I thank each of you for making it possible, particularly those who have given of themselves beyond simple posts to help realize our collective vision.

Exciting times ahead.
