Game Thread Sparty at tOSU, Oct 1, 3:30 ET, ABC/ESPN

My amateur psychological analysis is that this is just pure burn out. tOSU has been so good for so long the fan base is spoiled and complacent. The team could really use that energy from the crowd during this rebuilding season, too.

I have started to notice this at literally every single sporting event that I've been to over the past several years. I think that for some reason, the "golf attitude" of no sound allowed until action is over is taking over fans. Also, I've noticed that, increasingly, going to sports is purely a social opportunity. I mean, there might as well not be a game going on, people are just going for a different place to sit and talk. I can't count how many minor league games I went to this summer where there was at least one group in my immediate vicinity that paid absolutely zero attention to anything other than their personal conversations besides the National Anthem and the 7th inning stretch. Sports seem to be increasingly just passive entertainment, and it really is a shame.

I'd love to go to a game where the crowd was like the ones that constantly got us penalties when that bullshit rule about crowd noise levels was in place. Only game I've been to was the New Mexico St. game, and while it was really neat, I really want to experience the true electricity that nowadays only comes with a scUM game or a major OOC matchup.

A Buckeye game is never a social event.... It's a 3 hour scream fest that'll leave you with the coarse throat of a hooker.

I just wish everyone had that mindset.

Baseball I get. If you want to have a social experience, then please go to a Clippers game. The playoff baseball games that I have been to have a much different feel. But college football should feel like a playoff every single game. I understand when we play a bottom tier mid-major program, that the crowd isn't going to be crazy. That's fine. But when it comes to conference play, every game is do or die, and winning any way possible is key.

I don't care how we get it done, how awful it looks, all I want is a win. And if we can't score on offense, and the only way we can win the game is by a loud crowd helping out defense hold Sparty and force turnovers, then I'll know I did my part.

I'm not worried about the crowd noise the rest of the season. Place will be loud for Wisconsin and Penn State. And it won't be for Indiana, but hopefully that doesn't matter. But the crowd could make or break this game...make or break this season.

Michigan State/Ohio State always seems to be a turning point in the season. We win this one, get some confidence, and maybe catch Nebraska just at the right time. From there, anything can happen. The one thing about a young team, especially a young offense, is that the team can grow really fast and get extremely good in a hurry, like what happened in the 2005 Michigan State game (granted this team is even younger than that one), what a turning point. From that blocked FG onward, our offense just started to gel and really took on a completely new identity. Or with a young team, a loss in this game could really cause the season to turn bad quick. Quite a big game indeed!

That mindset? During games, I'm not thinking about a hooker's throat. Other times, perhaps.

I'm loud at every game. It's hard for me to really point a finger at the students all THAT much. The school gives us the shittiest seats yet we at least stand the entire game (excluding timeouts). With the increase in popularity of the program, you've seen a ressurgence of fairweather fans who are taking up a lot of seats, great seats at that. They're sitting on their asses and eating their nachos with sideline seats. I sat in C deck last year for a game and that's the place to be, no doubt about it.

With all that being said, the first big ten game usually gets people pretty excited. I'm so pumped for Saturday! Great weather, great tailgates, great game. :io:

The student sections would be a lot better if they didn't have morons in charge of starting the cheers.

They should create a test about appropriate points in games to start certain jeers and when to just shut the hell up.

For instance, trying to start the wave during the '08 Penn State game is something that I will never forget or forgive, that guy deserved a lifetime ban from the shoe.

I also had the misfortune of being within ear shot of a student section leader who would scream into the loudspeakers about getting loud because the team "needs us" on every play during a five score fourth quarter lead against I don't even remember who.

They seriously need to do something about who they let scream into the loudspeakers at the front of the student section because it seems that more often than not a jackass ends up with that spot.

I was there several times for that, and it was a total crock. Especially when Harbaugh whined his way to a penalty (or at least a time-out). Ohio Stadium still had the track back then, and frankly it's only been really loud on a couple of occassions that I can remember. The vast majority of the time, Buckeye fans have seriously disappointed me with how quiet most of them are; and that's been true since I started going to games in 1973.

Very to the point. Fans in general are part fanatic. This being said, we should not expect mediocrity but on the other hand should not go off the deep end when change and growth or players, coaches and systems occur. In my opinion, Ohio State is not at the elite level this year. But we should expect that with some rationality balancing how we as fans react!

GO BUCKS! :osu:

There seems to be a large and vocal section of the fanbase that believes that anything less than undefeated and competing for a national championship every year is underperformance. They're a bunch of spoiled brats IMHO but that's me.

This is not limited to Ohio State fans.

Bingo. I think Tress amplified this and made many take the success for granted. OSU fans have been spoiled for the last decade. I guess if we have a small downturn at least it will renew the fighting spirit in some of our complacent fans.

I think this is right--I think the vast majority of fans are OK (although pretty content just to sit there and only cheer on a TD or turnover when OSU is on defense), but no matter where I sit in the Shoe, I'm always within earshot of at least one or two idiot grown men that whine like 4 year olds at every little thing that didn't go the way they wanted to during the course of the game. I seriously think these people expect OSU to win every game 77-0 and even then they'd find things to complain about.
