The only reason I can think of is Matta believes they aren't ready for the big minutes.

OSU is paying him the money for his judgement calls in that case. Trust the coaches and whatnot.

Yeah I guess so... It's just frustrating in games like this.

dunno if this was discussed, but is it just me, or does Sully need to learn he needs to keep a cooler head? I barely saw any of the game, but when I read quotes about all they wanted to do is get him frustrated tells me he needs to learn to calm himself down
Quite simply, in my opinion, yes.

Satch wants to talk about how much beating it took before Jared grew frustrated. Me personally? He looked down and out from the beginning, as far as his head being in the game. Everyone did. Sparty played him like a fiddle. All the little chirping and stuff he wanted to do after little bumps and field goals...they were baiting him and he took it hook, line, and sinker.

One of the most selfish performances I've seen out of a Buckeye team in a while.

Tired of this team looking to others (refs, teammates) for their problems on the court.

Overall disaster of a game. If a team can throw two big men at Sully, and we don't find a shooter quickly, it will continue to be ugly basketball. Purdue found out how to exploit us on the defensive end with the high pick & roll. Now Sparty finds out how to shut down Sully on the offensive end. If he's looking/whining to the refs after every play, we're in for a short season. The idea of him having to match up with Anthony Davis or Fab Melo is downright scary.

I'm just saying that I still believe they have what it takes to win it all. They played like (Mark May) today and tuesday, and have a lot of areas to get better at, but so do a lot of other great teams around the nation.

I'm not sure I believe that. Yeah, I remember the Duke game, but that wasn't a normal game for our team, it was an exceptional one. It was fucking fun, though.

I honestly believe we had a better team last year. We don't have the outside shooting we had last year which makes it harder on the inside game. We also don't have a guy like Dallas Lauderdale to bring the physical presence in the paint when necessary.

Time will tell if my assessment is accurate but one thing I do know is we damn sure need to play better than we did this week.

Just my two cents by I wish we could throw another big out there with Sullinger. With no Diebler to throw the ball to when he gets double teamed I would love to see another big under the basket thsy Sullinger can hit for an easy shot when the double comes his way. It seems that every shot we throw up and miss is a 4 on 1 mismatch for the rebound and if Sully doesnt come up with it we are screwed. 4 guards/small forwards and one large power forward under the basket and no true center seems like a recipe for failure unless somebody is one fire from the outside. :(

We don't have to have someone on fire from the outside. We just can't afford more than one of our 3 main scorers cold any given night and tonight all off them were cold.

Asa for Sully needing to cool down, There is good fired up and Sully and bad Fired up sully. Good fired up Sully calls for the ball and just dominates possession after possession. Bad fired up silly starts forcing shots looking to the refs every time he misses a shot regardless of whether there was a foul or not and takes careless frustration fouls. We don't need to calm him down we just need him to do the former and not the latter.

Agreed. Thomas, Buford and Smith can light it up from 15'+, but when they are a combined 5-28 from the field last night happens. Last night's game didn't put a dagger in anything for OSU... they are still in the Big Ten lead and on track for a high NCAA seed. What last night did show is that if they don't at least match the intensity of the opposition they better not expect to walk out of the arena victorious.

Sully forced way too much last night because he was frustrated. The one and only time I can remember him passing the ball because he didn't have position the ball got swung around, re-fed to him in a better position and he made a nice shot. When his head is on straight he makes better decisions (as do most players). I'm concerned we will see hack-a-Sully more often to try to get him frustrated, especially if another game is called like last night's.

I'm glad I can come here to learn about basketball.

Two kids who will be playing in the NBA next season each went 2 for 12 - but we lost because our bench players didn't get enough minutes.

Winning 39 in a row is not celebrated. It is used to support arguments that failure to win a 40th is due to coaching failures and the need for an overhaul.

MSU played a magnificent defensive game which was officiated in a fashion that supported the approach they took. (They also got 119 minutes of PT from upper classmen.)

Whether this team is as good as we think it is depends on how good you think it is. We certainly have some weaknesses. And our inexperience often shows. But the suggestion that we will be improved by seeing more of Ross or Scott or somebody else even less experienced than those currently on the court is pure conjecture.

This is the worst game Ohio State has played in the last 3 - 4 years.

Good thing about this is they have hit the bottom of the barrel and the only direction they can go is up. Wisky will still be a tough game on Thursday but there is time for them to fix their issues before the B1G tournament and the NCAA's.

I hate to see them lose but it's better to struggle now with time to fix it than have these issues going into the tournament. They will get their mojo back.

:oh:

I watched the 1st quarter and final quarter and will watch the game with RugbyBuck later this week.

The outcome is a disappointment and I think that Coach Matta has a bit of work to do. The Buckeyes have looked flat and rather unmotivated against MSU and Purdue. From the very start of the game, there were signs of selfish play.

That said, Oh8ch captures my thoughts and I won't repeat anymore. This is not a loss to be ashamed of but it is one that should be used by the coaching staff to highlight problems and get ready for the NCAA tournament. Purdue and MSU have identified some weaknesses that need immediate attention.

What the team needs to do is to avoid blowing this week out of proportion. They need to learn from it and get their heads on straight. If they win the final game in East Lansing, this will be forgotten in the rear view mirror.

Well done on 39 straight.

Three areas of improvement that I see from this game for this team are:

  1. Mental toughness
  2. Defensive position and movement
  3. Rebounding
I think if Matta can coach them up in these areas, the rest of it will fall into place.

Sully with 16 rebounds, 10 turnovers and 0 assists. Ouch on the offensive end.

Purdue showed teams an offensive gameplan that gave tOSU problems, and now Sparty has shown teams a defensive gameplan that gave tOSU problems. Each of them takes the proper personnel in order to execute it, and perhaps some cooperation from the way tOSU is playing, but they're both issues that need to be addressed.

The rematch in East Lansing will be a good indication as to whether this team is ready for a postseason run, and it will likely be for the regular season title. I'm looking forward to it.
