We're lauding a D that look good for 3 quarters in the 1st 2 games but dodn't look good in the 4th quarter in either contest with the game on the line. Hmmm...

The inconsistent O blame only goes so far. We almost blew the Navy game and couldn't close the USC game. An 8 Minute 80 + yard drive in crunch time wasn't luck by USC.

I'm not counting my chickens even next week against Toledo, who just put up 54 on Colorado.

I'm a loyal fan but this team needs to grow and is ranked too high.

Sorry dude but I just can't agree with you about the defense.

18-15 game look at the point breakdown

7 of those points off the turnover, you CAN'T blame a defense on a 2 yard drive. That leaves 11 points that they gave up..ELEVEN.

As far as our points go, 2 of those were off a safety. Leaving the offense with 13 points, then you account for the turnover that cost us a score (7 points they scored-7 they cost us) and you have 6 net points produced on the offensive side of the ball.

Our defense was just plain on the field too long at key parts of the ball game, you just can't expect them to keep gas in the tank. Part of Tressel's game plan is controlling the ball, you don't have to score points necessarily you just have to move it and give your defense time to get their wind back. Look at the first half after the missed field goal, we get it back go 3 and out and SC takes it down and makes the field goal, you just NEED your offense to step up in those kinds of situations and control clock. Same goes for the 4th quarter, eventually you've got to make a play or 2.

The Navy game shouldn't even be brought up in discussion at this point, it should be obvious that it was simply a lack of focus/looking ahead to the next game mixed with a little gimmicky offense. Unless you think that Navy is almost as good as USC (with a better offense)

If the offense picks up, this team should be a top five team by the time Michigan rolls around. If we win that game, and Michigan should be a top fifteen team by that point, there remains a slight possibility that we could make it to the BCS title game. Seriously, this is a championship caliber defense, and we just need some consistency on offense to go along with it.

]No other team who plays USC in the regular season will:[/B]
  • Hold them to 118 yards or less rushing
  • Hold them to 313 total yards or less
  • Hold them to 20 points or less
The yardage (rushing, passing and total) will probably prove to be about 2/3 to 3/4 of their average per game on the year after the regular season.

18 points will almost certainly be 1/3 to 1/2 of their average scoring for this season.

Our offensive production on the other hand, will probably come in right around where their average defensive numbers stand at the end of the year.

This is all speculation of course, but it would all match the DSA averages for the Buckeyes over the past 8 years.

Saturday night was not a "bad" offensive performance or a "great" defensive performance by the Buckeyes. It was exactly who they've been in the Tressel era on both sides of the ball. The defensive line performance was phenomenal, and to have a performance in a big game that matched (will match) the DSA numbers is a welcome sign; but it is not success by any meaningful standard.

Again, I concede that this is all based on speculation. So go right ahead and bookmark this post. Then come back to it at the end of the season and you'll see that I'm right.

All of that having been said: Those who say the Buckeyes are over-rated at 11th need to check the house for gas leaks. Seriously. There are not 5 other teams that can do what the Buckeyes defense did Saturday night. This is a Top 10 team.

To be Top 5, they need to have the offense play to half the level of the defense.
Well I'd like to think that but no one can say for certain that it'll turn out that way. We have to take a wait and see with that one. Cal held them to 17 points last year and that was with Sanchez and a veteran D. It just kills me though that Stanford and Oregon State can beat them and we can't.
What really kills me is that the last two years they've beaten the team that beat us very convincingly (Illinois and Penn State).

The

'The" Ohio State Buckeyes.

Simply the best college football program in the nation.
  1. Stadium rocking...talk about loud fans..ears hurting...no voice for days after!
  2. Former players who are all over football coverage..EG: Robert Smith, Herbie, Etc...
  3. Our Band is simply class!
  4. Buckeye leaves on the sparking helmets.
  5. Tradition!
  6. The Only two time Heisman winner.
  7. The Shoe
  8. The Game
  9. Woody
  10. The Future!
Heart breaker but.....

  1. We didn't cave in when adversity hit....early interception/TD..like we did against Florida, LSU, USC... TEAM STUCK TOGETHER LIKE AGAINST TEXAS LAST YEAR....Folks this is a good change.
  2. Out hit and rattled the mighty USC team....see Taylor Mays/Barkley and others.....That simply is Ohio State Football.. don't believe it watch any game Woody Hayes coached!
  3. Andy Miller is a Left Tackle and a damn good one..this kid is going to be an All-American folks write it down!!!!
  4. The O Line played well in general....Against a very good defensive...easily the best we are going to see outside practice!
  5. Special teams were stellar!!!
  6. Boom is mean and I frickin love that.
  7. We had way less big negative plays than last year from our "O"
  8. Welcome Back Mr. Saine!
  9. The use of Freshman..Simon and Carter..If they can help, play them!
  10. Heacock has arrived and I'm glad!
  11. No fan of the moral victory shit but, the entire country has seen the last two times the Buckeyes have played and it is clear that we are not inferior with our Talent/Speed and the other team barely snuck out with a W...Trust me they saw the talent and the ability.
Needs Improvement

  1. Our PR department...We are far better than what the national media presents about our football program.
  2. Becoming a little more modern in some areas...as much as Petey is annoying he does keep his players loose and confident...think our staff could learn something from that...Terrelle tight as a drum
  3. Incorporate the wealth of talent by spreading it around....Flash, Stoney, Hall/Berry, Carter Smalls....Takes pressure off one guy and it gets more players involved, period! Great Offensives like USC, Okla, and the Gators are perfect examples of teams that USE Their diverse Talent!
  4. Short yardage running plays...QB sneak as a bunch of fellow BP posters have said....but I'll drag it back to the NC game w/ B. Wells lining 8 1/2 yards behind the O-Line and the Defensive end having the time to run around a trip him up...The counter play against Navy and yesterday is a bust...Figure it out Bolloman!
  5. Short yard Defense...I know it really starts before 3rd or 4th down but we need to win at least 50% plus of these battles when they happen....The LSU NC game was where this trend started and has yet to be stopped...I expected the bigger heavier Spitler to make this an approved area by the end of the year.
  6. Coaches prepare for different game situations, have a plan and make good choices....Too many examples to list of late and it's been beaten to to death but....Tressel needs to address this fast!
  7. 2 minute offense...Hello.
  8. Aggressive D at the end of games!!! The 3 or 4 man rush is lame!!!
  9. I know Pryor wants to be a drop-back passer to get ready for the next level, but not one player's personal goals are more important than the teams...Highschool, College or Pros. I'm not cracking on Pryor but the young man is a runner who can throw and sorry to say that will not ever change. He will and has improved as a passer but his size and speed as a runner is a nightmare for Defensive Coordinators.
  10. Sorry to say we need a modern Offensive Cordinator...It just obvious and to say other wise is just stupid! Who?? I don't know but lets find him and get him soon!
  11. Killer instinct....Needs to be developed! Crush inferior opponets...Bulids Mystic and intimidates future other teams...right or wrong it has major influence on poll voters but most of all it builds confidence.
Buckeye Leaves!

  1. The Crowd!
  2. Boom running hard and setting a tone. Saine when involved.
  3. Miller and Boren
  4. The Great Dane!
  5. Punt and Kick Covergage...Nasty and deadly efficient.
  6. Returners...excellent decision making and North/South efforts!
  7. Both the Punter and our kicker, very solid.
  8. Torrence and Amos both!
  9. Chekwa was very good against D. Williams...on him like a bad shirt!
  10. Homan and Rolle...boys were getting after it. Great pick by Homan and good tacking by both all night.
  11. D-line..Gibson and Heyward are awesome!!!!
  12. Kurt Coleman because I never saw you!!!!
  13. Hines hitting and playing.
  14. Heacock for staring Hines and putting together a unbelievable game plan to stop the 5 All American future NFL Hall of Fame Tailbacks.
  15. Nate Williams is a difference maker and played well and Robert Rose as a Defensive Tackle was a pleasant surprise.
Bottom Line

  1. I wouldn't trade where this program is for anybody.
  2. The future is bright.
  3. Terrelle is my favorite Buckeye and has just turned 19 years old. This kid is Special.
  4. Recruiting is awesome...We are recruiting more modern talent!!!
  5. I really like this team we have this year...no big crack on former teams but I like this group and I think they will make us even more proud by years end.
  6. Jim Tressel great man, great coach and great Buckeye!!!
  7. Change will come in the areas we all see...It has and is getting better....Just a little on the sloooow side.
:oh:

Two Things

1) I didn't see it myself but according to others with DVR USC didn't get into the end zone on their first score on 4th and goal. According to what I have heard the guy's knee was down at the one yard line. This wasn't reviewed but should've been.

2) One our final desperation drive where Pryor was called for intentional grounding he threw the ball from the 26 yet the ball was spotted at the 18. Any explanation for this and how did the coaches not catch this?

Sorry dude, but c'mon. Can we move on? The team lost a heart breaker, but nothing is going to change it now. Sadly, the final score was 18-15. The team played hard, and that's all I can ask for. If you want to second guess, complain, question, whatever, that's your prerogative; but at this point I'm kind of tired of it. I'm not taking it out on you, maybe it's just me, but I'm over it. The team lost, it sucks, but I don't know if we need a new thread to rehash things that have been covered in multiple places on this site. It's time to beat Toledo and look toward winning another Big Ten championship. We'll have another shot at a top 5 team or SC in the future, but not this week. That's the way it is.

You're right but that 2nd point is really bugging me. Not because I think the outcome of the game would've been different but for the life of me I can't figure 1) was there something that I missed to cause the ball to be spotted on the 18 instead of the 26 and if it was a mistake, how did the coaches not catch this? It's one of those nagging questions that's keeping me awake.
