Some BCS facts for your SEC friends

I just got my Sporting News in the mail today. Turning to page 6, there's a prediction of month-by-month sports stories and events for 2008. The entire page is meant to be a joke....

SEPTEMBER: LSU and USC open the season a combined 0-6, but they remain 1-2 in the polls as voters confess "wins and losses are largely irrelevant" in college football.

Do they even realize how close they are to the truth?

UGA and USC have ZERO claim to a national championship. ZERO.

ZERO.

Some even try to point out that our bowl record is because of "favorable matchup" this year. But in reality, The Outback is the only Bowl game where we sent a "higher" conference seed than the opponents did (Independance bowl were both #6 seeds). Every other Bowl game, the other conference sent a higher seed than we did.**

Let's see:

Fl 3rd highest ranked team in SEC gets Big 10 #3 in UM in a virtual home game.

KY-FSU even match up but KY gets an home game against and still barely wins against FSU less 35 players.

LSU home game vs OSU

UGA gets a decided home field advantage vs some high school team I never heard of.

AL plays in SEC country vs pitiful CU.

Too bad UGA could not have played USC. It could have been 0-3 for the big 3 SEC teams.

Other the other hand

PSU plays AM in Texas
Ill plays monster heavyweight USC in LA
UM plays FL in FL
UW plays UT in SEC country
OSU plays LSU at LSU annex.

I understand USC lost to Stanford. But this has been a crazy season. Michigan lost to App. State, then shocked everyone with the way they handled Florida. All I am saying is, there is no clear cut champ this year, and about 3-4 schools have a legitimate gripe.

No actually there is a clear cut champion, the winner of the OSU/LSU game.

Last year, I believe OSU was the best team in the country, but they lost to UF and that was it. This year, no matter who wins, the arguments will rage that their team should have had a shot at playing.

People will argue their team woulda, coulda, shoulda done this and that no matter what and the media will use it to get ratings for as long as they can. Thsi is not unique to 2007.

Also for every argument that could be put forth for a team there is a more compelling reason against them that could be used.

All you are hearing is guys who stir up controversy for a living, making a living.

USC gave up any claim when they lost at home to a 41-point underdog that was playing its backup QB.

Georgia gave up any claim when it got incested by 3 TDs at Tennessee (down 35-0 at one point).

I am strictly playing devils advocate here guys, but OSU lost to Illini at home. That sucked! If we would have won that game, then they can all kiss our a##! Damn Illini!

This has been a season of should haves and would haves. We earned our spot Monday night. Its our turn to show the SEC how the Big Ten plays football!!!

Instead of using rankings, let's use conference rankings. You know, the part that actually determines who finishes where in their conference.
MSU vs UCF... C-USA champ vs 6th (tied) in SEC
Auburn vs Clemson... 4th (tied) ACC vs 4th (tied) SEC
Alabama vs 6-6 Colorado... 5th (tied) Big XII vs. 6th (tied) SEC
Kentucky vs FSU... 6th (tied) ACC vs 8th (tied) SEC
Florida vs Michigan... 2nd (tied) Big Ten vs. 4th (tied) SEC
Tenn vs Wisconsin... 4th Big Ten vs. 2nd (tied for 1st) SEC
Georgia vs Hawaii... Hawaii was forced on the Sugar this year, due to Sugar having last pick of the elligible teams, and Hawaii had an auto bid.
LSU vs OSU... Big Ten Champ vs. SEC Champ

Quite a few of your Buckeye buddies having been discussing how meaningless homefield advantage is in the game thread. You should go check it out. Oh, and as far as Bama is concerned, that was not even close to "homefield advantage" for them. According to reports from that game, about 1/3 of that crowd was wearing Purple and Gold and was ANTI-Bama.

Yeah, and if USC didn't lose two games, they'd have a legitimate gripe. There's no "devil's advocate" here...we earned #1 by losing only one game.

I would venture that a great deal of that discussion on how meaningless is home-field advantage, is little more than chest-thumping. Spread across more threads, I note there's a lot of lamenting that the Big Ten has been forced to play road games in nearly all of this year's bowls. Very true. As mentioned before -

Penn State vs. Texas A&M in Texas
Michigan vs. Florida in Florida
Illinois vs. Southern California in California
Purdue vs. Central Michigan in Michigan
Ohio State vs. Louisiana State in Louisiana

If I am not mistaken, the Big Ten team has even worn white on each occasion.

The Big Ten tends to have a built-in disadvantage in bowl games because they're played in warm weather, usually against teams that are built to outrace each other around the field. The Big Ten doesn't have a three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust reputation by accident. That's how you succeed in the snow and rain.

And I should note, the Big Ten has acquitted itself quite nicely. Maybe home-field advantage doesn't mean much after all, because all but Illinois won despite hostile crowds. Folks would consider it very impressive indeed if Michigan marched into the Swamp or Penn State went to College Station and won - and the bowl game atmospheres weren't any different, so pretending these are neutral-site games doesn't do it justice.

This year, by luck of the draw, the Big Ten's bowl were basically away games, but that's more luck (or lack of) than anything else.

But that guy calling the Music City Bowl a home game for Kentucky is just plain wrong. Nobody in Tennessee gives 2 shits about Kentucky football. Hell, now that basketball season started, people in Kentucky don't even realize the 'Cats had a bowl game. Same with Bama at the Ind. Bowl. Those rednecks are pissed that they went back to a shitty bowl, so they didn't travel like you would expect, and the locals bought up the extra tickets to root AGAINST them.

Yeah, UGA had a huge one, but everyone's hands were basically tied on that. Even Bulldog fans were p!ssed that's who they had to play.
