So. California Burning to the Ground-Again!

OCBuckWife

I am the evil monkey in your closet
We get so much heat, not enough water, and crazy people who flick cigarettes out the window into the brush or just plain insane arsonists that we have fires at least every summer...but these are actually killing people this time!

link here too

and here

Last night the moon was an AMAZING bright orange through the haze of smoke. This morning as I drove to work, to the east (my right as I drive) the sunrise was breathtaking...again due to the smoke. The winds are incredible. The Santa Anas (as they are called) come every year, bringing pollen and nastiness and destroying people with allergies. This time, they are fanning the flames and spreading ashes and debris.

I hope that you and your family are safe from any potential calamity.

We aren't in the direct line of danger, no, thanks for asking. OCBF works much closer to the fires near Irvine, CA and may have to evacuate his office, however.

The Evacuations are still up on the air, basically the fires are about 2 miles from the office at the moment, it's hard to breathe outside and it's pretty grey out but still work as usual mentality.

Non-celebs too. :)

It stinks of smoke by my office which is MILES from the actual fire, both north and east, and my car and the parking lot have a fine layer of ash. The sky is a sickly grayish-orange.

And don't forget these fires are VERY serious. I mean even celebs are in danger of losing their houses.

Hrm... well if you consider that they are actually trying to keep an enormous fire from torching the city of San Diego, then yeah, they are serious, believe it or not there's a lot of people in California who aren't celebrities.
Just glad to hear you guys are ok - can't believe how bad this thing is. Supposed to fly to LA tonight for work, though I guess nothing is too close to LA County, right?
LA Should be fine, I believe Malibu is in LA county but it's quite a ways from the city.

To be honest, it may be the winds that keep you out of LAX. The fires cause crazy cross breeze gusts and the Santa Ana's are always high speed winds.
Visibility for the pilots may be an issue as well, depending on when you come in, but I guess instruments only would get around that.

Map of LA showing Malibu

There is some traffic rerouting happening around LAX so you might want to call a few hours ahead and find out if your flight is being affected.

Ohh I know, it was more of a tounge in cheek comment, as I saw some news site who seemed to be more focused with teh celebs who had to get out of malibu rather than the fact that 1000's of "normal" peoples lives were in danger.
