The NYT's coverage yesterday had an amazing bit of information in it. San Diego is the largest county in the country without its own fire department. The county relies on a patchwork of local municipalities to provide fire services. I'm amazed at a wealthy county in one of the country's most hazardous fire regions that refuses to tax itself at a level necessary to provide the most basic of municipal services.
While the NYT article didn't address this question directly, I hope that it does get answered in the fires' aftermath. Does this lack of a county-wide fire department slow initial response and coordination when these fires break out costing the nation as a whole significantly more money to bring in outside firefighters to contain and control these fires after they get out of hand? If so, at what point do we hold the citizens of San Diego county responsible for their greedy refusal to pay for their own basic (and necessary) municipal services?
